Weekly news 2018-11-17: episode 28 storyboard and new coloring tests

Hi patrons, I'm writing you from Toulouse, sitting in a Coffee, a couple of hours before my talk at Capitole du Libre 2018. Thank you very much again for the warm welcome of the episode 27 "Coriander's Invention", it really had a positive effect on the confidence I had to produce a trilogy of episode with a bit more storytelling and events happening in the world of Pepper&Carrot.

So, during the first week of November I storyboarded episode 28 but once it was in picture and I could read it I found it unfortunately a bit linear and flat. Not a problem with the story or the twist, but the way it was cut. The shots were not interesting pictures to draw. So decided to keep my storyboard sleeping for 2 or 3 days to take a bit distance. During this time, I released a mini duo of brushes for Krita and painted coloring test. You probably saw all of that on the social-networks. At the end of week, I made another pass on storyboard and finally fixed the storyboard. That was a good strategy!

Next week, my plan is to sketch over the storyboard and do a quick blury coloring under; I'll follow the step of the coloring test "Jump in a puddle" and set the Alpha version to share with proofreaders and translator at step 2 (in picture under).

Many thanks again for your support!

A sample of storyboard, I'm drawing it in bright blue with a recent chalky brush I shared. I keep it very rough because I keep changing it, scaling picture, cutting them, etc...

Here is a concept art for Cinnamon, a witch of Hippiah who has a small role in episode 28:

Here is a warmup sketch quickly colored (random character), a coloring test with an attempt at keeping a sketched lineart and only color very lightly. It wasn't enough painterly for my taste, but reltively quick to do compared with my other pictures.

The coloring test "Jump in a puddle", with its breakdown in three steps. I keep struggling with this: if I finish too much a sketch, a lineart or a drawing (with a thin brush) I loose almost all motivation to color and detail the picture. The picture feels finished in b&w. To cheat with this feeling; I need to sketch blury or with a large texture brush; something that can't be considered as final, then I need to precolor with large brush; then small painting strokes that will create edges, details and bring a real finish to the picture just falls by themselves (almost, a figure of speech).

It's hard, because I'm always really tempted to start an artwork with a solid, detailled, finished drawing or lineart while on of the key for enjoying the process with my digital painting style is to keep a subtle balance between 'rough' but with already right proportions, gesture, color harmony, etc...
