Bat Swing Action Study Timelapse

This is the Patreon only companion video to this month's Youtube video on drawing smears in Japanese animation. Hopefully, this can provide more of an insight on an animator's process when animating!

Yeah for sure! I started with Harmony when I first became an animator in Canada working on rigged shows. Harmony has strong drawing features too I feel but CSP often just does what Harmony does for cheaper and feels like it was designed for the Japanese industry.

Dong Chang

Thank you for the information Dong. I work with Harmony primarily so I'll see if I can use a rig to facilitate the tweening components of this following the hand drawn block in. Maybe it will yield beneficial results over the entire hand drawn process. Have you used Harmony at all?

Robert Buchanan

Hi Robert, I would say it took me a good part of an afternoon, maybe 6 hours or so, although I did spend some time before thumbnailing the scene out before I started.

Dong Chang

Hi Dong, fantastic work, quick question. I know the above footage is sped up but I was curious how long this full scene took you to complete?

Robert Buchanan

Good question. Animation is generally done on 3s mainly because it's cheaper and animation, when not too action heavy, can get away with it. It also has the benefit where by allowing the viewer to see each individual frames longer, and more of an impact and be given. Of course, animators will animate on 2s or 1s when the time calls for it (again, like in action scenes). And yep, the general rule of thumb is to not animate more than on 3s as that is when things start to look slideshow-ish. Although I have seen this rule broken when animating slowmos where animation might be on 4s, but the spacing between each drawing is miniscule.

Dong Chang

Hey dong just wondering when normally doing industry and practice, what are key frames normally left on, 3’s? And for in between what was the rule again? That in between can’t be more than 3 frames?

Nehho

Yeah sure. I've been using the built in pencil brush for a while, but recently I've been using one that some animators made specifically for animation. It's called アニメーター専用リアル風鉛筆

Dong Chang

Hey Dong, could you talk briefly about what brushes you like to use in CSP for your work? I'd assume you use some default brushes but I can't really tell.

Keet Buch

Yeah for sure. Hoping to explore the layout aspects of animation soon. I'd say just try to keep it as simple as possible and only add things that are necessary for the scene.

Dong Chang

Hey Dong, currently I’m working on an animation of my own and I realised that drawing backgrounds and environments are very hard. Especially nature backgrounds like forests. Worse yet is when you have to do some animating work on them too like the wind rustling the leaves and grass and such. Any tips or advice?
