Spaulding Marine Center

In the last video we visited the amazing Spaulding Marine Center, and they let us loose in their workshop!

I just wanted to share some more information about their mission, in their own words (below). I'm particularly enthusiastic about their paid apprenticeship - we really need more programs like this to help get young people into this highly rewarding trade.

Spaulding Marine Center in Sausalito is a nonprofit, living museum, boatyard and education hub dedicated to preserving, sharing, and expanding boatbuilding skills and the maritime arts. Building on the legacy of master boat builder Myron Spaulding, the center is home to Boatworks 101—a one-of-a-kind, paid apprenticeship program training the next generation of marine professionals.

Spaulding offers public education programs including homeschool semesters, Summer Sea Camp, and adult courses in marine systems and maintenance and more. Its working boatyard serves the Bay Area, caring for everything from historic wooden vessels to modern fiberglass yachts. Beyond the shop floor, Spaulding opens its doors to the community with concerts, markets, speaker series, and other waterfront events. By supporting Spaulding Marine Center, you help sustain all of these programs—training apprentices, teaching students of all ages, preserving boats, and keeping Bay Area maritime heritage alive for generations to come. Learn more about Spaulding and donate here: https://www.spauldingcenter.org.

Spaulding is great. Wonderful people, but not cheap!

Spaulding Marine Center and the Arques School of Traditional Boat Building did a multi-year resurrection of Freda, the oldest active yacht in the Bay (she turned 140 this year). Freda died twice and these two groups brought her back to life after she sank at her berth in San Rafael. The Master Mariners Benevolent Association's Foundation was a prime raiser of the funds to allow the project to succeed. It takes a village to keep wooden boats alive and sailing.

We know Spalding Marine well. After years of looking, we finally found person who can do excellent varnish work. She was fast, competent, and totally reliable. I'm certain she'll be a great success here in Santa Cruz. If Piper Elliotti is a regular example of what the Spalding system turns out, we are in for more!!
