What we do know is that it isn't unheard of to leave a physical body behind to live out your days in the spirit world - that's what Iroh did willingly. What happened to his physical body is unknown, but he did it while he was still alive. We also see in season 2, Jinora's body in the physical world while her spirit is trapped in the spirit world, and despite the water healers doing their best, it was clear that her body would have died if she didn't return to it, so presumably that's what happens to Aiwei
