"Chernobýl" 48-49-50 (PART TWO BEGINS)

Thank you for your patience, my beloved readers. No big notes or INSIDE STUFF this time around for my blog - only huge gratitude to you all for sticking here and giving me your support.

I really hope you'll enjoy second chapter of Chernobýl ! It's going places ;)

Also I'm 30 tomorrow! And I've just overslept my Sisters Brothers movie screening :(

Insanevember

I've been pumping tons of ink on my paper in the last couple of weeks of this months. It's like I'm trying to make this year go away faster!

Also: now I have a new favourite female character to draw (friendship ended with Uruku from Undertow, haha!):

Also lots of STONE, METAL and ROUGH FABRICS

Blast from the past!

Posting this old-ass video of a mysterious cover now, because by the time it will be actually used and released the video will be even more painful for me to watch :D In just a couple of moments here I use the old calligraphy pen I "fancied" for about 6-8 month before getting my sweet G-nibs. And when I see it now I get actual muscular memory pain of dealing with that shitty instrument. There was something masochistic in me back in 2016, I guess.

Kill 2018 to live in 2019

Here's a very accurate portrayal of how much of a clusterfuck 2018 was for me, haha! This is me, lying on the ground. You can recognize my round blobby head. And the best thing about 2018... We still have two months full of potential bad news and troubles to go!

But seriously, even though this year was stuffed with frustration, I'm happy to be drawing this book and having you guys around me (virtually, that is). This is the most fun I've had with my art in at least 4 years and I've never had s...

INKTOBER 5 (and that's it!)

Channeling some Parajanov here!

Some history: this drawing is based on my old - VERY old - sketch of Bêlit from Conan. On top of that, for years I was dying to use this weird skewed glow in one of my drawings:

(Fernand Khnopff, "An Angel")

Finally, everything came together this month, and all this happened:

Maintenance notice

Hey there, everyone!

First of all - congrats to me and you all on finally reaching 50 patrons <3. Thank you for sticking with me! Trust me - soon we'll get this bad boi running on full speed again.

This Autumn was kinda slow so far, I must admin. Work and the whole Inktober thing consumed most of my attention in October - especially because I need the Inktober stuff for a local convention in the beginning of next month, because I have no old merch left and al...

INKTOBER 4

Hooo boy! This one was a damn toughie, but also a ton of fun. And the version above is not yet final - I did some digital meddling with it, and may want to do more in a few days. I'm a big sucker for "threshold" function in Photoshop, but it doesn't fit well when I use soft pastel  - exactly as in this case. But I also have the softer scanned version:

And here's the entire process:

INKTOBER 3

First of all: here's my main inspiration for this piece, Summary Execution under the Moorish Kings of Grenada by Henri Regnault -

(You can't imagine how hard I lost my shit in Musee d'Orsay when I saw it!)

Many pictures in this series (which, naturally, will last much longer than just this month) will sometime...

Early look at the second piece! My plan is to have two distinctive style of rendering in each piece.

Also - some process photos:

At this poiint I decided to change the angle for kid's head:

INKTOBER 1

Okay, so I'm really tired of shooting process videos (and putting together my elaborate setup every time), so for this month's series of mysterious A3 illustrations some process photos will do just fine (hopefully).

Here's the initial marker sketch:

Now let's do some lightbox magic with it!

HATCHING

This page is a good example of how chaotic - and yet intentional - my inking is. You can see a whole barrage of different inking techniques here - two different types for skies alone. And the last panel looks like something I would fucking hate for more than one panel  - but in ONE panel it works good, giving way more "information" than another style wold give in the same panel.

Is it a good way of treating your comics inking or is it not? I'm not sure, but I love it anyway. And at least ...

MEGALO BOX, SSSSSON!

Back in Summer, when I was very vocal about my adoration for first few episodes of MEGALO BOX, one of my usual clients told me to go ahead and do a nice big commission with them sweaty box bois. Seasons changed, and I finally obliged! (Now I only need make someone ask me for a Lady Eboshi commission, ahaha!)

Also, I did this. It could work a...

Cheating my way into "coloring"

Yesterday good dude Mikael Lopez announced our short comic titled "A Cold Place Between the Shores" which will be  included in Mikael's upcoming collection of stories by the same name, so I figured I might do a little post about my hectic so-called-coloring process!

Here we go! Basically, when I want to save some time to my colorists, OR when I want to have my pages in greyscale (because I am super insecure about my raw inks), I do simple 2-layers toning - with 2...

Aping good ol' Walt

Here's another biiiig commission I finished last week. I'm on a streak here!

(I'm almost out of physical screentones, so I just used gray marker for tones. But nothing could stop me from messing with scanned version!)

And of course, here's the original Walt Simonson's cover for THOR #380 to which I was asked to do the homage:

I was so happy when a good friend of our - well, our EVERYTHING - Sloane Leong asked me to do this commission for her, especially because drawing wolves is always a treat for me - and the results are showing, I hope! <3 Thank you, Sloane!

Speaking of friends - I welcome all new patrons to my humble domain ^__^ If everything works out OK (and damn, I hope it does) -...

PATREON TIERS CHANGES

HEY THERE! My current and possible future patrons, this post is for you!

These 7 month since I launched this Patreon were a blast - your continuous support helped me to get through tough summer and release Slavic Nihilism #2, I shot hours of videos for your enjoyment, and on top of that, we did a ton of little commissions together!

Lately I've been thinking about tweaking and adding some things around this Patreon to make it even more exciting for another 7+ month (and j...

More patron commissions!

Every time a new patron joins our ranks, I'm shooting their first commission on video! So enjoy it, peeps ;) (Other patrons are a bit late with their requests this month, so we're shorter on pictures this time around!)

Also I started experimenting with multiple characters in one picture in exchange for additional month of patroning (is this even a word?), so we now have great pieces like one with God of War! And it is also a sign of change to come to our tiers system (announcement com...

Slavic Nihilism #2 download

Hey there, fellow Sequentialists and Aficionados! ^__^

As promised - here's this month's comic for our library: the freshest of fresh releases, Slavic Nihilism #2! (I really hope that you've been following it for the last half of the year through my weekly development blog and enjoyed all the stuff I posted along with it. But anyway, now it's all done and waiting you in one chunk!)

Slavic Nihilism #2 drops here soon

This is a little heads up for all my patrons. Maybe it will convince some of you to up your pledge to $5 level before the end of this month (or wait and do it in September ;) )

What you seeing here are some excerpts from BOLVANY - our second story from the full second issue of SLAVIC NIHILISM (first story being Chernobyl). It's written by yours truly ...

"Chernobýl" 47 (END OF PART ONE)

So here's a good splash panel to end on! (and I am terribly sorry for this week-long delay -__-)

CHERNOBYL will return in a couple of months - both as webcomic here on Patreon and for free here (with some delays, as you could see) and as print continuation of the story in Slavic Nihilism issue 3.

Something nice, something short

Here's a couple of pages from a quick short comic I got involved in back in May, when I was absolutely sure that by August I won't have any spare time for stuff like this. Long story short, I'm finishing it now, hahaha.

As you can see, this comic is done on the smaller paper (A4) and laid out in my beloved (probably unreasonably so) 6 panels grip. What you can't see is that it's also done with a...

Aaaaaaaalmost there! And by that I mean that we have literally only one more strip to go, and then Chapter One is over and we're taking a pause.

It's all crazy here, with a comic festival coming this Saturday to Saint Petersburg (and a TON of good people from all corners of Russia coming along with it!) Boxes with print copies of Nihilism arrived today, my mom, who stayed at our place for almost...

Still nothing to share except for Slavic Nihilism really :(

Fun fact - I remember that when I was inking this panel I was screaming at the top of my lungs at my friend (on the phone, I think?) because of 2016 election. And I mean I started inking it screaming and I finished even more frustrated.

What a divisive year that was even for Russia, huh!

(Yes, this filthy pig is actually wearing his fur coat on bare chest. He had some rags under it in earlier pages, but for the print versions I edited it out because it's way funnier for me).

Third panel of strip #43 keeps getting compared to Snake Plissken, which is super distracting, so at some point I will need to publicly state my main inspiration for our Lefty, hahah:

This panel changed a lot about my art

It might not look like a game changer, but I suddenly realized that one specific thing recently has been invading my work in a very aggressive and yet comforting way, and it all started around last December.

At the time I was thinking a lot about doing linocuts at some point in the future (and I actually dipped my toe in it later with CHERNOBYL logo), and the look - but not the technique itself - somehow leaked onto the panel above. I used my favorite jeans cloth texture in a more collag...
