I picked up a couple of neat things and decided to make a video about them in time for christmas! Wait, uh, oops

I shot this like a week ago, then uhhhhhh things happened. I did not expect to write, shoot and release a public video in time for Christmas but that kinda took priority once I realized I could do it, and then I was pretty worn out over The Holiday. So that's why I make several Christmas references in this! Because it wasn't, yet!

As noted near the end of the v...

Video: An MP3 Jukebox For Everyone (Including the RIAA)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT_-1TOyifc

Hey everyone! I know it's late, and I'll be releasing this publicly in the morning so it won't be much of an early access, but phew - it has been nearly a month since I released a video, for reasons that are hard to encapsulate.

I can't believe this was just there at the junk store. I walked in and saw it and - I am not exaggerating here...

Patron exclusive: Commodore 128 mail call

Haven't done a mail call video in a while, but I got a Commodore 128 from a viewer the other day and figured you all might like to hear a little bit about it, since (IME, at least) it's one of the less-covered 8-bit machines. This video is kinda rough if you ask me because I shot it at home with my awful old Panasonic camcorder (and man, I never quite remember how much I hate that thing until I try to use it) but I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.

Patron video: Steadicam setup & demo

Hello, new patrons! Since there's quite a few new subscribers after the last exclusive, it made me think that now would be a good time to try to get back to making more of the same.

I'm in the studio quite a bit, doing stuff - some of it's interesting, but I don't record most of it, and that's a bummer. I could record more of it, and it would probably be fun to watch, and hey, I'm already doing the stuff. It's free real estate.

For instance, in this video I take you throu...

This was a quick one, no particular commentary about it, I just wanted to follow up the trip video by showing some of the stuff I got actually working (and tempt more people into signing up for patreon, heh.) Next video should have a bit more meat on it. Thanks everyone!

Hello everyone! Thank you for taking the time to watch my dreary vacation footage! But more importantly, thank you all for supporting me. Let me take a moment to talk about that.

I couldn't have gone on a vacation at all without your help. My job does not pay great, Patreon is literally half my income, and without it I would not be able to pay the bills for my household and have enough left over for the occasional hamburger, let alone a road trip. What you're doing for me is li...

Video: IBM's First Laptop (Was Terrible)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htl_JbZIcUU

This one doesn't really need the lengthy making-of Patreon post because I decided I owed some explanation to my audience in general, so I just put it at the end of the video itself. I bit off more than I was prepared to chew with this one, and the pacing and info density really ended up being more aggressive than I would have liked.

Someone described this...

An enormous number of you probably weren't patrons at the time that I made the predecessor to this video. Over a year ago, I got an IBM Eduquest, dashed off a quick unscripted video about it, and said I'd return. Then I never did, for a variety of reasons - now explained.

I now have two Eduquests, and I like the new one quite a lot. The old one w...

Oh man. This was an absurd video to make, for no good reason.

First, the things that worked: You may notice the wardrobe change. Up until now, I've been completely married to collared shirts, for a couple reasons, one of which being that I need something to clip my lav mic to (I've tried the various T-shirt techniques with no success.)

Gonna release this right now, no time for early access. Things have not gone to plan at all lately - this video was supposed to be out last week.

It speaks for itself for the most part, but _man_, it's just yet more proof that I cannot make a "simple" video.

I got myself all upset about this big lump of crap sitting in my office for six months while...

Edit: I've discovered that A) I haven't released a video in a full month and B) even the copy I uploaded two days ago is still not at 4K. I was using this processing delay as an "early access" period, but it seems Youtube is jammed again and the delay may never end.

Since only a fraction of my audience watches at 4K and I desperately need to...

Sad news (public)

Not sure why I felt like I shouldn't post this earlier since I figure people would want to know. My cat, Gibbs, who was sort of a mascot to some viewers, is no longer with us. He got very sick, very rapidly, and we were told there was nothing we could really do other than euthanasia. I was extremely close to him and I am pretty devastated.

My usual approach to mourning is to work through it so this probably won't have that much effect on my output, but who knows. Maybe I'll disappear fo...

I eliminated CD swaps FOREVER.

This is a video I've been wanting to make for a long time. I had not attempted it until now because I knew it would be a tremendous amount of work; it was, for several reasons.

First because it's documenting a whole branch of computer technology most of us know nothing about - I was unaware it existed until about five months ago. I had to research it unti...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIrQX5bvzow

Periodically I tell myself I'm going to make a Short Simple Video where I just show off a thing and don't make a Narrative out of it. I am incapable of that, but this is still the closest thing to a "eh, this is neat I guess" that I'm capable of. That's why it ends kind of abruptly, there's no real wrap-up for once because it's not part of a larger story. My go...

Well! This is kind of a long time coming, although nobody knew that. While the ostensible topic (hey, it IS over 2/3 of the runtime, to be fair to me) of the video was a very recent discovery and acquisition, this is also a sleeper followup to a previous story.

At the end of my video on the Hitachi Mpegcam, I mentioned that their website did say they made...

But there it is! Software cracking! Microscope photos! A disc format that Foone doesn't have! (I'll send one to them.) This video's got it all.

Premiering new video

Hey everyone - if you're watching my new video on the Vaio, or planned to, you may have just been interrupted. Sorry, Youtube is bad.

I planned to release it as a Premiere, but forgot that there's no "backdoor" link, so once I enable that about five minutes from now, it becomes "private" until the release tomorrow.

If you were planning on watching it tonight, you can see an alternate copy in 1080p here: 2022-04-13 01:17:51 +0000 UTC View Post

They also said they had a Newtek Tricaster, and would I like to borrow it for a video?

Of course I said yes, because the Tricaster is extrem...

Bonus video: Nostalgia

Back in March 2021 I shot this entire video about how video mixers work, demonstrated on a specific model I have, then trashed the whole project because I didn't have the space and hardware to do it right (and I still don't) but I found the rough cut on a spare drive today and was astonished at just how poorly I'd scripted it.

Not that it was bad writing per se, but I guess I just wasn't really thinking about the audience the way I do now. I spent the front ten minutes of the v...
