Poe Dameron - finished!

Good grief, this guy is fun to paint. There are faces that just can't go wrong.

Video is coming!

Poe colour wip

I swear he's just flowing from my brush. Yay.

"I can fly anything."

Well hello there, gorgeous. :D

There are many reasons to love Star Wars 7 for. Black heroes, female heroes, two-dimensional villains - all fine. But giving us a cocksure fighter jock who still manages to be all around likeable and friendly is something really rare. "That's my jacket! -- You can keep it."

I haven't used orange watercolour since... uh... 2001. Will have to mix. ;)

Poe Dameron

I'm slowly making my way through all the awesomeness that is The Force Awakens. Poe Dameron has a pretty small part, but his snappy one liner count is topped only by Han Solo (probably higher considering how many lines he has in all).

Poe: "Why are you helping me?"

Finn: "Because it's the right thing to do."

Poe (astute): "You need a pilot."

Finn (chagrined): "I need a pilot."

That movie's got such wonderful dialogue.

Idril for Catherine

Idril, this month's prompt piece for Catherine! I drew this in a conference today - she drew a lot of heads from the (male) colleagues around me, haha.

Hope you like her, Catherine! *hug*

Kylo Ren (painting lightsabres in watercolour)

Not a timelapse this time, but a thorough look at what went into that Kylo Ren piece. With narration again. Hope you like it!

Destiny

So, woke up after five hours and felt the irresistible pull of the Dark Side from my desk.

I can't believe I pulled this off. Seriously. I was scared silly of that lightsabre, and now look at that. And also, snow and stars and trees and coarse fabric and hair and okay, I'm fine, we're all fine here, thank you. How are you?

XD Incoherent moment there, sorry.  I'll be sorting through rewards to upload, so those of you who are not that much into Star Wars can have...

Dark circles under everyone's eyes

... it's 2 AM here, so though I feel I could plough right on and finish this by 5, I very probably shouldn't. Though the dark circles came really naturally to me just now. If only I could stop squinting!

It's weird to draw a face with a structure I've literally never drawn.  The lineart looks wrong and I can't put my finger on why - and then I do the shadows around his eyes and under his mouth and there he is.

Troels, happy with the added greasiness? ;)&n...

Lightsabre fun

(Is it weird to spell it the British way, incidentally?)

Did three practice lightsabres in different techniques before settling on this one - and then botched the first attempt and started again. But yay, this'll be so worth it. So far, all my watercolour Star Wars art was comic-like cell shading, but this one lends itself surprisingly well to watercolour! I'm so happy with it.

Painting day setup

Do you have "soundtracks" for things you do? I haven't listened to Ash in ages, and as soon as I started painting Star Wars again, that was my first go-to in iTunes. The album "1977" starts with the sound of a TIE fighter screeching past and ends with the song "Darkside Lightside". ^___^ I listened to that album all of the time in the mid-nineties.

Bottom right is my digital colour sketch for this piece. I'm so scared of that lightsabre in watercolours. O_o

"I will fulfil our destiny"

Lineart version of the latest Kylo Ren piece, which will feature a lot of watercolour-only effects without much lineart. It's funny how this is the artist's version of greenscreen filming. XD "Yeah, we'll put that lightsaber in later."

Four seasons

Here's all four of them! I find myself wishing I'd paid more attention to the likeness. I never realised that they don't quite match. :/ Hope you don't mind, Is! Just separate them by those gorgeous mats and nobody will notice. ;)

But looking at these, I feel justified in turning down a comic book offer I got just before Christmas. Likeness has just never been such a great concern of mine, and it shows. I probably could do another comic of Maglor and Maedhros though, no problem... &...

Summer Thranduil

That came out colourful! As it should. I really love the effect of all of them together. The pale, tentative colour of spring, the riot of summer, the dull and rich tones of autumn, and the stark contrasts of winter. <3

Yay sunflowers!

Haha, I can't remember the last time I've used colours that popped so much! I was worried this would be getting too close to either the autumn or spring colour schemes, but it seems I needn't have worried.

By the way, Patreon seems to have been hiccupping badly of late. If your payments for this month didn't come though, absolutely no worries. I also tried to reply to people's raffle print wishes a couple of times, only to have my notes drop into "Website down" Nirvana. I got everyon...

Come to the dark side. We have cookies. And gorgeous hair.

Oh heck, when Juhi threw Kylo Ren my way as her January commission, I did love the idea, but dear me, I hadn't realised how much fun that guy was to draw.

Kylo Ren rocks. Seriously. That hair! Those moles! <3

And in case anyone starts with "Ugh Emo Ren!", well yes! That's what the dark side is all about.  Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Kylo Ren is merely the first dark side user who totally unabashedly embrac...

Man of Gondor

Here's the prompt for December (yes, I'm behind... sorry!) for Kerstin, who requested Beregond. He turned out a bit like my hubby, but all friendly, dark-haired, bearded men tend to do that. :D There are worse things!

Drawn in pencil on paper, then printed on toned paper and treated with laaaaavish gold leaf. I love this look! I'll definitely do more with this style.

The last of the seasonal Thranduils for Isabella.

Re-uploaded this morning's post with a better scan. I'll try around a bit with my tablet cam - I'll be staying at my parents between Christmas and the New Year, and it would be nice to be able to show you all the sort of stuff I fully intend to churn out then. ;)

Let me take this chance to thank you all for this fantastic, wonderful year. Your support was such a bolstering experience through nearly all of it, and all the discus...

Blues and Greens

There are paintings that just happen without you even thinking about them. I was recording this and painting away when I suddenly realised, Dang. You've got reflections and little waves in shallow water here; how on earth do I paint that? I need to stop filming, I need to get myself some ref - if I can't find any, I'll shoot some when I'm on the North Sea next week...

Or I can just do this... and do that... and oh, more green I think, and oh. Yup, that's how I paint th...
