Surreal art I painted for a local patron in the summer of 2024

In August 2024, I painted the works seen here for a free holiday at the peerless Nisanyan Hotel in Turkey's Izmir province. In exchange of these paintings, my dad and I had a free 3-day stay there. With temperatures well over 40 °c (100°F), I had to take these photos in my swimming trunks.

"Never-Be", an alien from Robert Reed's "Great Ship" universe

Commissioned by generous patron J. M. - the latest on an ongoing series.

The triangular nostril dilated. With that, the triangular mouth dilated, joining the nostril in taking in more air. The face and body were gray like clean steel. The two eyes opened halfway, gray-black and gazing at the illusion of sunshine. White pseudo-feathers rode the crest of the long head. What was more ...

Commissioned giant predatory amphibian in an alt-hist setting similar to the 15th-century

The crocodile-like "therka" species, commissioned for the generous patron J. O.

These animals were meant to inhabit a setting loosely reminiscent of the 15th-century Italian Wars, I therefore illustrated one with a hazy background reminiscent of The Naturalist's Library by 2025-02-05 15:47:39 +0000 UTC View Post

Testing a mobile painting kit

I made and tested a "field mobile painting kit" to paint with acrylics while out and about in town. It is a small art bag containing the following:

  • Small 8-section paint palette.

  • 6 tubes of acrylic paint

  • Small watercolour kit

  • 6 brushes

  • Small water sprayer

  • Several sheets of watercolour paper

  • Small plastic cup for water (refilled from cafe bathroom)

HALO: Fan-idea for a Covenant steed

Steed animal design for the Jiralhanae (Brute) species from the HALO universe, commissioned by the generous patron S.

This was one of my most complicated commissions. I completed it in three passes - one for the steed, one for the saddle / harness, and one for the final figure, mounted.

This approach enabled me to add more details to the creature's saddle and apparel, and prevented a mix...

Tameryraptor

Palaeoart drawing for my own pleasure, depicting the predatory dinosaur Tameryraptor, known from fragmentary remains.

The little bump from the top part of the skull, indicated (B) on the diagram above, has been interpreted as a nose horn, but it was likely part of a more rugged texture on the animal's head.

New sketches with mixed media technique

I developed an intuitive new sketch technique - I always keep a bunch of random, associated pens, pencils, markers, watercolours, and crayons on my desk. I grab one at random, and complete details with whatever I have on my hand, draw for a while, then switch. I care not for color harmony or consistency. The results look incredibly vibrant and energetic!

Commission: The cultist of a malign mechanical goddess.

Created for generous patron S. A.
Let's go over the creation process for this character.

This was the initial sketch, done with markers on tissue paper.

My patron added an expert finishin touch by suggesting a peeled face, almost like a Venetian mask.
