Diary of Morn #07 | Sound Design

The sound design in Children of Morn has two goals. The first goal is to convey motion and put emphasis on the things that need to be emphasized. The second goal is to create immersion and draw you into the game. Today I'm talking about why these two are so important and how I try to achieve them. And just to make this clear. I'm not talking about music in this post, only the sound effects.

But first some news about the progress on Version 0.1. To make it short, it's ve...

Diary of Morn #06 | My Writing Workflow

Time for the sixth installment of the Diary of Morn. This time I'll be talking about my writing workflow. How I go from a blank page to a full scene with images and soundeffects in Ren'Py. Also you can check out the current progress in development in the picture above. As you can see there is still quite a lot to do, but I'm definitely getting closer and closer.

My Workflow:
After four years of working on these games and going through trial and error...

Diary of Morn #05 | A little Whining

Todays diary entry will be a bit different from the others. Instead of focusing deeply on one topic, I'll touch more briefly on a few different things that I want to get out there, but feel like they wouldn't really warrant an entire dedicated post. But before we get into those, you can check out the current progress in the graphic above. As you can see things are starting to come together. Still not nearly finished, but I'm slowly getting there.

Diary of Morn #04 | Making the City

This time I'm back with a timelapse. As last time the video contains some inevitable spoilers, be aware. This timelapse shows how I've made one of the new environments of the new game and gives a first glimpse of how the city in which Children of Morn will be set, looks like. But arriving at this point was also a journey in and of itself. So in todays post I want to talk about the architectural design for the city in which this new game will take place in and how I got there.

Diary of Morn #03 | The Road Ahead

Last week I hit the first big milestone in the development of Children of Morn, I completed every single character for the game. Time to talk about the road leading to the release of version 0.1, what is already done and what is still ahead of us. Also, the first little glimpses at some of the new characters.

In the first image of this post you can see a d...

Diary of Morn #02 | How it all Began.

And on your grave I will swear. Swear to be the thorn in her eye, her one weakness, her mortal enemy, her death.

On this very day, the 24th of December, the first version of MIST was released. That was three years ago. Now, the game is finished. For a long time I thought that finishing MIST would leave me overjoyed and happy. Filled with energy and enthusiasm for the next project. That's also what my friends and family always seem to assume. They think...

Diary of Morn #01 | The first entry.

It's time for the first development diary of my new game Children of Morn. This first entry will be a short addition and not much can be said, instead you can watch.

I've made a roadmap to reach v0.1 for Children of Morn. A roadmap that I'll talk about in more detail in the future. One of the first paths on that roadmap, and the one I'm currently on, is to create the new character models for the game.
In the timelapse above you can see how I spent the past one and a...

The Development Begins!

I've returned. My vacation was very relaxing and after I came back I moved to a new place. It took a while to set everything up again, especially with a few hardware and software upgrades I got for the next game, but now I'm fully settled. Which means that on Monday I will officially start the development for Children of Morn. What does that mean for you?

Time is most important.
I know that everyone wants to see the new game and get their hands on it. Which ma...

Feedback Post | MIST [v1.0.3] Final Version

And let us not forget the feedback post. One last time I'm asking for your final thoughts on the game, to see what I can learn from finishing MIST.

I don't take offense to criticism, so feel free to be open and honest. It makes the game better.

Patch Notes | MIST [v1.0.3] Final Version

On the 24th of December 2019 I released version 0.1 for MIST. Now, almost 3 years later, the game is finished. It took me all I had. Hours, upon hours of bashing my head against the keyboard to get to this point. And I think it was all worth it. I present to you the, most likely, final patch notes for MIST.

Removed typos.
Hundreds of them. I'm not even kidding. Thanks to many people from the community like Mythril Leaf, Lone Ranger or Keless, to name a few, I managed t...

Bad news regarding Steam

MIST has just been banned from Steam. Despite the page being online for over a month now they just informed me that they have banned the game. I had basically no chance to even get a word in and wasn't asked a thing. In fact they were completely silent until I reached out to them.

The reason for the ban is basically that they feel Mia's age is too ambigious, which is kinda weird. I know that she is petite, but I don't think anyone playing the game would mistake her for a minor, she cle...

Dev Log #27 | Feedback and how it changed for me.

It's another Monday but this time I'm not writing an Update post, as pretty much all I'm doing is waiting for Steam to approve the final build for MIST and working on a trailer for the next project, which I can't say too much about. So I'm gonna use this moment to talk about something that is pretty important to me, feedback.

From the very first post of my very first game builds I've always invited you guys to give me your feedback, and I've always read the commen...

Monday Update #86 | Getting closer to v0.11.

A New Monday (or Tuesday) means a new update post. Like the last one I'm not gonna de the usual list of what I've worked on to avoid spoilers. But there are a few things I can tell you without taking any of the fun away.

The release for Version 0.11:
In two weeks. That's when I'll release this next content update. The truth is, that I'm already about 90% done with the new content and will most likely finish it all this week. But there are still some tweeks and chang...

Monday Update #85 | Roadmap for MIST

I kinda didn't notice that yesterday was Monday so this update comes a day late. That is also not the only unusual part of this Monday Update. To avoid spoilers for the ending of MIST I'm not gonna talk about what exactly I'm working on and will instead pick a different topic.

Today we'll take a look at what I have planned for MIST:

  • Let's start in the present. The version I'm currently working on will be called 0.11. It will be the last cont...

Monday Update #84 | The start of the epilog.

Version 0.10 released. You finally got to see the final fight. Now it's time for the last content update for MIST. The epilog to the game. But I'm making it clear once again: This will NOT BE the last update for the game. It will most likely conclude the story but I'm gonna publish at least one more update to fight bugs and spelling errors.

Patch Notes | MIST [v0.10]

Version 0.10 is finally done and on its way to you. I'll release the links once the uploads are finished. It's time for the final bossfight and some patchnotes.

New Content:

1. The story continues to the final fight against the Director.

2. 2 new scenes of which one is stupidly big and features 19 different animations. An amount that I'd normally spread across 4-5 different scenes.

3. A new area to explore leading up to the fight.

Dev Log #26 | Animation Breakdown #3

It's time for the third and final installment of my Animation Breakdown series. Last time we focused on the actual animation, cleanup and the final compositing. Now it's time to look at the rendering, the sound design and the exporting of the animation as a final video for the game.

  • Writing, that's what I always start with.

Monday Update #79 | A roadmap for MIST

MIST v0.9 came out and as you can probably tell if you've played it, we are getting close to the finale. That's why in todays Monday Update we'll discuss my plan for the future releases to the game and when the final release will happen.

But first a warm welcome to all new patrons and of course a continued thank you to the existing ones. I'm happy to have all of you on board, without the financial support I wouldn't be able to develop this game like I want to, so I app...
