Mix critique and a quick mastering session
Good job overall. Bit of mixing and copy the master setting or just put a limiter on and do not forget dither (just put it at 16bit).

The drums need all the attention. I think he probably used more of james brown regarding the ghost notes. And I think the squeal is here: https://youtu.be/AoQ4AtsFWVM?t=329
The harmonics and bass are set to go like this.
Silence, Panning and de essing will get you where you need to be

So, here is a great example of mixing towards a genre. This time broken 80's. In my terminology I use 'shit' but what I meant to say is. Imaging a 40 year old cassette tape playing back. It's not going to have beautiful highs, clarity and thick low end. Instead it will be hissy and wobbly. Embracing that 100% will then give you 'dreamwave'/lofi 80's pop.. or whatever the genre is where you purposefully neglect any thoughts to making it sound 'more' and make it sound 'less' instead.

As the mayor of Hounslow would say girth. It's done with Panning, Delay (mid side or ping pong), Reverb, mid side eq, and as a last resort the imager or haas effect ;)

The laundry list:
1. Listen to a reference song use pen a paper figure out when elements are played (1 2 3 4) level and the balance of elements
2. Replace sounds if needed and source sounds that work instantly
3. Delete all compressors and question why you need one to begin with
4. Mix after you completed all the steps (2 to 3 weeks later)
5. Mix only with EQ volume and panning (leave the song again)
6. Mix only with reverb and delay (leave the song again)<...

If you really can't do anything for your room it's a ok option. If the headphones you own are already pretty flat.. no need for sonarworks. I tend to find the correction a bit over the top. The dry wet again works wonders

Hey guys,
Give yourself 1 hour and see where you end up :). Time is always a fun challenge. Limiting time and limiting the amount of plugins tends to make you a hell of a lot faster.

Use saturation on anything with notes. Add even harmonics to those instrument to make them sound 'richer'. Add excitement to anything you need to stand out and add it to any top end you need for drums. It literally excites sounds (adds top end harmonics)

You can do it to set levels, eq into it, compress into it.. You can go as crazy as you like. But again I like the thought: "I have pink noise in my ears" haha

Alright, so a bit of a long story but you guys should know what to do now :).
a lot more can be said about it so I suggest you watch a video of any middle aged person explaining it. Also pro tip: "Do not watch people in racing chairs. They are as much of a race car driver as a mixing engineer".

Last tip is to Copy the rough thought and make it fit your first idea. Generally speaking if it's a smaller company they will stick with the first thought. If it's a little larger more people will have an opinion. So you give them a choice or you loose the gig.

To add to this, check the top end in comparison to a reference. If someone would play the song, after or before the reference would it work? If it does, no worries :D
