What I've been up to over the long weekend

Hey my Patrons! I had a very busy weekend. My cousin came up from Portland with a lot of miniatures to paint. Unfortunately I was a dumdum and didn't photo the ones that I painted (he took them back with him) but he left some base-coated ones I'll be working on. 

We went out to Defiance Point to look at the flowers and stuff and I took lots of reference pics. I think I want to stick a dragon in that one with the cherry flowers and blue sky.

Mat-Cutting Tutorial #3

I am having an unusually good brain day, which means that I have enough energy to do the things I set out to do (and am able to make a to-do list in the first place!) so here is the next mat cutting tutorial page. Just a little bit of side-information. 

Peacock Colors

Another somewhat-experimental painting. I really ought to be pushing the experimenting BETTER but when I start to run into problems I tend to go to fixes I know and things come out samey. WHOOPS!!  Well, at least I'll be able to send them off to art shows >_>;

I usually rush paintings but with this one I spread the work out over a number of days. The ref was one of my own zoo pics. 

The colors I laid down initially for the underpainting were just leftover crap I had from a commission. So I worked a lot more blue/green and purply colors in than I ordinarily would. Which turned out interesting??? I kind of like the idea of putting in an underpainting of just whatever color first. I'm sure there's a smarter way to handle it than I did just ...

Furry Potters and a howdee-doo

I hope everyone is doing alright in this crazy time of pandemic. The good news is that this is the norm for the human species--epidemics have jumped from other species our entire existence as the human animal. The bad news, of course, is that it may get worse before it gets better.

Two more Grisaille

Ok so .... I mixed up WAY more 'black' paint than I needed and I want to use it all up rather than trying to find a place to put it. So I'm just painting these greyscales pretty much every day until I use it up. I intend to try a different color treatment with each one but sometimes when I'm rolling on painting I just fall back into brainless paint mode and fail to experiment. I might have to like, sticky note reminders to my own forehead!

Magic Cat Grisaille

Another greyscale that I am going to paint over with color. 

A grisaille is a painting in greyscale that is meant as a kind of painting armature over which color, often in layers of glazing, is added.  Using brown and white is called a brunaille and green is called a verdaille.

I've been wanting to do a lot of grisaille for years and have finnaly got my butt to work.  I'm going to make a bunch and then pick out some to go over with color. Here's number one!

Holy shit, you guys. Flowers are blooming here and I'm FINALLY waking up out of my winter stupor. I've started doing experiments in gouache which I will share once finished. I always have a very low period during the middle-to-last half of winter that nevertheless always seems to catch me off-guard. At least, I can never seem to forgive myself for it. I just feel like a useless, no-art-making potato.

Painting for Tivadu

A commission I've had hovering on the back burner for quite a little while now. The winter blahs hit and I just couldn't. Fortunately Tivadu is very patient. I kept in communication with him and he was fine with me taking my time. 

I experimented a lot with edge control and a rougher application of paint--which I usually don't do AT ALL. I love the effect but I need to become better at doing it >_>;
