From the Closet: Jumping Cat Notes

This must have been... sophomore or junior year of high school? I think that's when I took Astronomy. I am amused that instead of doodling something obvious, I decided to draw a cat jumping down from a ledge, walking around the edge of the paper, and jumping to the corner. :D

Caturday and All is Well

I had a hard time getting this picture because every time I aimed the camera at him, he decided that meant it was time to get up and press his head against my legs. Not sure if affection or messing with me. Possibly both. Lol. 🤔

It is Saturday after a long week! I hope it treated you well. I started the weekend off by baking cornbread (using this recipe, which is really low e...

From the Closet: Unicorn Poster

The Very First Glaseah Image Ever

We return to the 'From the Closet Project' with this piece from 1990, the very first Glaseah I ever drew. It was in response to a commissioner who wanted me to draw "something weird", to which I said, 'uh, like what?' and he said, 'how about a skunktaur with wings?'

So I said... 'uh, okay, you're the boss!'

The commissioner counted himself well satisfied when I turned it over. Young Me, charmed by the results, asked him if I could keep the idea and use it for stories, and he said,...

Poem: Ocean's Daughter

I don't often show my poetry! Mostly because I either think it's not very good, or I think it's much too much personal. But while sorting through my archives I found this one, which I had been shopping to poetry journals, and I still like it. Enjoy!

OCEAN'S DAUGHTER

The forever-magic glows brilliant in your veins.

Conceived for heaven's singing, you were bred

From the Depths of the Closet: Amakitia and Crew

My new project, from now until the end of the year (or possibly beyond) is to go through all the loose papers in my closet and scan them, and then recycle or put them in deep storage. Some of these papers are junk--old report cards, random pamphlets, drafts of stories I was marking up--but a lot of them are doodles and notes and random things that I probably shouldn't throw away, not permanently. And there's a lot of them.

I thought it would be fun to share some of these ancien...

Caturday, with Beanbag Cat

I feel the teal beanbag harmonizes well with his orange and white coloration. Very striking. A+, Ron Weasley Cat, would trust with fashion decisions again.

Somehow we are entering the last third of the month and I don't know how that happened! Last week was kind of crazy, and next week is going to be crazier, with about a dozen competing responsibilities. Fun! But I thought it would be worthwhile to call out a few things:

Three Jaguars Comic: Warning Labels

I feel this is 8 pages of self indulgence because it's not really business advice, as much as an excuse to draw the three jaguars making funny faces at one another. But in case you are amused by funny faces, here's the 8 pages. :D

The Promised Explanation About Audiobooks

(In Which the Jaguar is Brutally Honest)

A handful of you have asked about my decision to stop releasing audiobooks, and I can condense that down to a single reason: they make no money.

Now, I don’t always allow that to stop me if the product is something I enjoy. And I really do enjoy the audiobook editions of my work. Arranging for and listening to them has brought me one of the few unadulterated pleasures of my career; they’ve inspired me in fascin...

August Progress

Somehow, readers, it is September of 2019 and I’m not sure where three-fourths of the year went. August in particular was crazy—thank you, school year—and the changes to my routine haven’t settled yet. I know for some parents, the start of the school year means more time to work; since I am Chauffeur, Executive Assistant in Charge of Scheduling and Appointments, and Motivational Coach, the school year is far busier for me. Put that together with having to head into traffic da...

Alysha Forrest Series Read-Along!

A couple of weeks ago, one of our Discord members started reading the Jokka books and copying quotes out of it into the spoilers channel, and this was so much fun for the people who'd already read the series that some of them started re-reading it with her, and adding their comments to the spoilers channel, and the long and short of that is that everyone had so much fun they decided to do it again, but this time on purpose.  (Wow that was a long sentence. Anyway!) They've selected the Al...

Caturday with Birthday

In addition to school starting, this week is Daughter Birthday Week so it's astonishing I got anything done at all! It's probably not surprising that midway through the week I crashed on the round chair for the first nap I've taken in months. When I woke up, it was to this cohabitant. I am okay with this, since he seems to have passed out of the 'I randomly bite/claw things while napping' phase. If he can nap politely, he can nap with me. As long as we've established that it is Jaguar's chair...

July News and Progress

Somehow it is August, and the school year is starting again and I have no idea where the summer went. This happens every year and every year I am sad to see it go. Summer for us is a far saner pace, and I much prefer it to the stress of the school year; in that, I guess I’m not unlike my daughter. But, August is here, so… let’s talk about what’s going on!

The biggest news of July, writing-wise, was obviously the launch of Kherishdar’s Exception at reta...

Saturday, with Flower Coffee

Not a cat picture, but pretty anyway, I hope. My favorite coffee shop is this quirky place run by a Sicilian who insists on giving me free food. We have this long-running slapstick routine where I try to pay him and he refuses, so I try to sneak around him and pay his wife or daughter or barista, and sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. It's... kind of ridiculous and funny, and adds absurdity to my life.

Anyway, usually the coffee they bring me has a heart on it, something the...

Help Launch the Forthcoming Jahir and Vasiht'h Novel!

On Saturday I mentioned that I'd challenged people to hit a certain goal with the Kickstarter, the prize for that being that my November release would be the novel that tells how Vasiht'h and Jahir go back to Anseahla to pick up the adorable bundles of centaur joy: Vasiht'h's children.

Boy howdy, did I underestimate how much you all wanted another milk-and-cookies book. In short, we're getting that book, and everyone who backs the Kickstarter will get an e-copy of it when it's d...

Most of you are aware that I issued a challenge on Kickstarter: that, having funded all the vignettes for my Princes' Game collection, I was going to offer a new Jahir and Vasiht'h novel if we hit $8000.

Shockingly, it's been barely a day since I announced that and we are already at $6600. And we still have 9 days left.

Everyone who participates in the Kickstarter will get a free e-copy of that novel when it's rea...

On Our Way!

The "Major Pieces" Kickstarter is live! This is the one where I write all the backstory/cut scenes/extras relating to the Princes' Game series that you request and vote for. The current list of vignettes needs $2750 to fully fund, and we are already at $1900!

If getting an author to write you all the little interpersonal or extra bits of a story you wish you could have seen is something you'd enjoy, come play with us. <3

Worldbuilding: Sleeves

Every once in a while, people ask me how to do worldbuilding and I never have a good answer at the time because it’s one of those things that works better with an example. And I have an example now, so let’s talk about worldbuilding!

In this case, about sleeves.

Yes, I know, it seems really random. But there’s a reason I translated Carl Sagan’s quote about having to invent the univ...

Kherishdar's Rebranding, and KH4 Pre-Order

It is almost time to return to Kherishdar! Book 4 is hitting retail in 23 days, which meant it was time for me to finalize the draft and the formatting, plus the rebranding for the whole series.

My plan for the look this time around was "obviously calligraphy", and unlike last time I did the books, this time I can actually write, grammatically, in the language. So I went for watercolor backgrounds with floated calligraphy, and simplified the fronts to keep from distracting from the visu...

SPEAK SPANGLISH TO ME BABY: Writing Bilingual/Multilingual Characters

(Some background here. I've always written for writers' magazines on topics of interest to me, and multilingualism in particular is one of my favorite topics for obvious personal reasons. This article, however, was rejected because it was too likely to get authors in trouble because of the current climate--something about worrying about co-oping other people's cultures, or getting languages wrong and then having to deal with angry readers. The latter I figure you handle with research, and I d...
