One of the most valuable things for a student is good constructive feedback.
With that in mind I am developing a group critique tier that will allow more access to this exact resource.
So, which one would you like better:
- Higher price = guarantee of individual feedback.
- Lower price = only group feedback citing common difficulties/improvements represented by individual drawings.
UPDATE: All of the scenarios that I a...

We are almost all the way blocked in now. In this video we will get all the way there.
The colors will be almost as specific as we want to be at the end and our main focus will be to establish the éxisting values as colors without too much contradiction.

It's a new year and we are now in full color! Or at least our paintings are going to be.
Converting a grisaille into a color painting necessitates a lot more than a couple of glazes.
In this series I am going to walk you through each and every step of the process.
The palette I am using:
Flake White and Ivory Black from Williamsburg Oil Colors, Raw Umber from Beckers, Alizarin Crimson Lake Extra, Vermillion Extra, and Old Holland Yellow-Brown from Old Holla...

Hello and happy holidays to all of you!
- Curriculum Live, Drawing Essentials, Part 2 will take place on February 1st! It will cover intermediate and advanced Bargues and head structure templates (mostly Loomis).
- My full color painting tutorial is coming out in January and it is a super dense lesson on oil painting. Because of the length and density (and with the holidays here as well!) I think that I will ...

The stunning conclusion 😉
Highlights in the eyes! Dark accents around the features of the face! Long sinuous strands of curly hair!
In this video we are going to wrap up this super challenging, and very expressive portrait in Sepia chalk. What a medium.

In this video we have gotten the drawing blocked in and the real challenges have begun:
How to get an even half tone value with this stuff?
How to get a flat shadow value?
How to get a sharp dark edge, or a soft one for that matter???

Big challenge right here!
Working with compressed chalks and looking for a high level of refinement took me all the way to the final buzzer.
The result though was worth it. I love this drawing material and in this tutorial we are going to get really creative with it!
Super organic block in process in this drawing as well. You will learn how to let the composition, "grow."

Well, I'm not correcting Rembrandt per se, but rather the images that you can find out there on the internet!
These are for the ongoing Rembrandt master copy challenge hosted by myself and Ken Goshen on Instagram. For all the info you need to know check out my Youtube video about it > LINK

This is is, the final countdown! But really, in this video we are going to work on finishing the drawing. That means fine-tuning relationships. Value, edge, and focus, all of these factors need to be in balance. Also we will make our final choices in shape design. So much to do!

For a long time now I have been working on a way to give you the most, "atelier like," experience that is possible.
There is a LOT of info to cover and so the delivery has to be fun and engaging... and interactive!
So, after holding my 1st live workshop (center line construction) open to all my patrons and getting feedback about it I think that I have a proper solution!
The 1st of 3 installments of Curriculum Live will start on December 1st. Thes...

In this section I will be taking you through the process of refining the drawing. There will be one more video in the series as well that deals with ultimately finishing the drawing, so this will still be a stage that requires some patience and restraint. So, let's get into value and transitions!

In this lesson I will explain my palette choice for this painting and talk you through every step as I take it.
I highly encourage you to work along with me. Here is what you will need:
- 1 canvas with an imprimatura (a dried layer of thin/transparent paint on it).
- Flake white, Ivory black, Alizarin crimson, Vermillion, & Yellow-brown.
- Brushes, palette knife, palette cup, & a little bit of linseed oil.

It's back!
This is one of the earlier tutorials that I made in my Patreon career. Even so, it seems to be really popular (from all of the requests I have gotten). Looking back it's not so easy on my eyes as a "film maker," but it is honestly one of my favourite drawings.
The rest of the lessons from this video series will be coming out very soon.

Hello Everyone! The latest episode of WWLA is a little bit different that the others. 1st of all, it's longer. 2nd, it has a conversation I recorded with Ken Goshen talking about all things Rembrandt van Rijn.
Theres a lot about paintings techniques and also some clear accountable take-aways that you can apply to your paintings.
Hope you like it. Please leave any feedback or questions in the comments.

Working on finishing a portrait painting can be one fo the most difficult challenges you can face as a painter. The struggle is real! Trying to attain a great likeness of the model while keeping your colours and values fresh are just a few of the challenges that are “up in the air.” In this lesson I focus on teaching you about simple and actionable goals for this final painting session. In my experience this is the best way to help you stay focused and moving forward.

Just to recap we have come all the way from our graphite study of this portrait through to blocking in the underpainting and now finally to the final layer. This final painting session for the grisaille section of this course will be split into two videos. The primary reason is that refinement and subtlety take time. We are going to work on pushing ourselves, and our paintings, to a level beyond where we thought we could go. All of the planning and preparation from the first two ...

All of the time, when I’m not making analog paintings, I am making breakdowns of great portraits. Doesn’t take a lot of time and it really sharpens you’re eye to see what they were up to. This one is by Sargent.
This sketch, by the way, is made with Photoshop, using my Cintiq Pro 24".

In this video we will travel around the paper attending to little problems here and there. In addition this part of the lesson is about creating a sense of harmony in how each of the heads are handled in terms of refinement and value.
Materials: graphite (4h-4b), white chalk (.9mm from sewline) on Stonehenge paper that is stretched over a 1.5 inch deep cradled panel. The paper has been toned with ink before starting the drawing. Model image os from the Travis folder.

This 3rd video in the lesson turns the subject's head just a little bit further away. We almost see the model's profile, a particularly challenging pose to draw.
