A rare drawing from the Golden Age

This drawing of Guts was featured in Animal House #7 of 1991. It was advertising the beginning of the Golden Age, which would start in the next issue of the magazine. What's notable about it is the fact it didn't make it into the manga itself. From the looks of it, it seems to have been intended for Golden Age (3), before the fight against Bazûso.

The text doesn't say anything terribly interesting, but for those curious:

(The one who's become the) cold-hearted one-man hero, G...

Podcast #34: Discussing the concept of apostles

Walter and Aazealh talk about apostles as a concept, what makes them unique in the fantasy landscape, how Miura kept them from feeling repetitive over the years, and how he managed their confrontation with typical fantasy monsters after volume 34, among other things.

A look at Young Animal #17 of 1994, featuring Berserk Ep. 42

Here is a look at Young Animal's 17th issue for 1994. It was published in August and features episode 42 of Berserk: "Fugitives" (逃亡者たち). It sports a color page that would become volume 8's cover (it was released at the end of October). Episode 42 is itself collected in volume 9, which came out in April 1995.

Back then, the magazine was almost 10 episodes ahead of the volumes, a fact that incentivized fans to subscribe. It's only with volume 34, published in late 2009, that v...

[371] How can Schierke read Guts' mind through her body of light?

In episode 371, Schierke wants to check on Guts' state, but can't open the door to his room on the Sea Horse. So she uses her body of light to go through the wall, and then, just floating next to him, she sees memories associated with his sword. When these fragments (depicted linearly, like...

Podcast #33: The "Splatter Platter" 3

The Splatter Platter Returns! What's that again, you might ask. Walter and Aaz had to remind themselves as well. It's like a sample platter of Berserk moments. Each of them picks three and submits them one by one to the other in order to see what he has to say about them.

Some mementos from the time Miura won the Tezuka Cultural Prize

Kentarou Miura was awarded the Prize for Excellence at the 6th edition of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize, which took place on May 28, 2002. As is customary, the people present at the ceremony were handed out an enamel pin emblazoned with one of Tezuka's famous characters. For the 6th edition it was Uran, Atom's little sister. Here is the speech Miura gave at the ceremony.

Continuation discrepancy: Why would the destruction of the Cherry Tree cause the elves to disappear, but not Puck and Ivalera?

Part 3 of this series from Walter about various major discrepancies in the Continuation compared to Miura's Berserk.

[369] Why would the destruction of the Great Cherry Tree cause Danan and the elves to disappear, but not Puck and Ivalera?

This shouldn’t have happened; at least, not by the rules we were working with for Berserk’s world. The vanishing of the elves was a surprising phenomenon that hasn’t been properly explained, and at this point I don’t expec...

Comparison between the Japanese and French volumes of Dur-An-Ki

Someone asked for a comparison between the Japanese edition of Dur-An-Ki (from Hakusensha) and the French edition (by Glénat). Here are a few shots of the two side by side, taken by a smartphone camera.

You can notice a slight color tone difference on the covers, but otherwise Glénat's version is pretty faithful to the original. Worth noting: the Japanese edition's dust jacket has a premium paper finish, with a "porous paper" feel to it (a bit like ink blotting paper). Meanwhile the G...

Mori's afterword in volume 42

Thank you very much for buying Berserk volume 42.
From here on out, it's Berserk without Miura.
Of course, it will be imperfect.
I know some of you will have trouble accepting it.
Even I myself have the same feelings.
As a mangaka, as a fan, I am a fundamentalist and a worshipper of Miura.
However, as the person who was nearest to Miura and as a close friend of  his, I can't leave aside the story he wanted to depict in his drawings.
Please forgive me.

Learning Japanese with Berserk: Dream

The character of Griffith is defined by his relentless pursuit of power. He tells Guts in volume 5 that he wants to have his own country, and in volume 6, he describes his philosophy of life to Charlotte by equating one's ultimate ambition to a dream they would devote their life to.

In Japanese, dream is 夢, pronounced ゆめ (YUME). Like in English, it holds this meaning of a far off ambition as well as the more mundane one (dreams when you sleep). It's a very common word. It's featur...

Kouji Mori's recent comments about the continuation

Mori recently gave a long interview where he mentioned his work on the Berserk continuation. In it, he reveals that they have to add or change things based on guesses in order for the story to make sense. He also says that he is hesitating on whether to incorporate certains elements or not because "Miura hadn't decided on them yet". It is notable as it goes back on his original promise when the project started.

Podcast #30: Lovecraft's shadow looms over the solitary island

Only slightly late for Halloween, we revisit one of the great horror moments from the series: the solitary island from volume 35, with its ghost ship, desolate fishing village, and creepy worshipping of an ancient, evil god. We had not explored it in our Halloween Spooktacular podcast from 2021, and that regret lingered.

Specifically, we discuss one man...

A statue of Casca's cute little dream-self

Here is a statue of the little embodiment of Casca's ego that survived in her nightmare while her mind was fractured. It isn't officially licenced, I bought it off an Italian sculptor on Etsy. I don't usually buy unofficial merchandise, but this one was too cute to pass on. It's pretty big too, standing at about 22 cm tall.

Update

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updates over the past month, Puella has been sick and I was swamped with work. Posting activity will now return to normal.

Separately, we had been debating whether or not to continue translating the new episodes coming out from Mori and the assistants. It's a real drag to work through for Puella, so she's leaning towards stopping that to focus on Miura's interviews and other relevant texts. Episode 374 was already done so it will be posted next,...
