Working on something new!

The 5$ Tier and up might have seen this already in the recent Patreon videos I have posted, but I wanted to share what's going on with all of you of course!

I had the idea that I wanted to try to combine the technique I used for Sensations where I rotoscope animated my own filmed footage into 2D characters, but this time in 3 dimensions!!!

I thought that if I film a camera move following an actor through a space, I could then motion track that footage, recreate it into a dig...

Patreon Video - Ep 08 - World Building - Real Time Workflow

Lets carry on working on the same shot I did in the previous video. This video is very unedited as I just wanted to show you a more raw real time approach and give you a glimpse into sort of steps I take. Sometimes I find its interesting to watch other artists work in real time to get an understanding for the time they put in etc. Let me know what you guys think of these type of videos.

Been doing more progress on the shot and should have more to show soon. Really excited to see where I...

Patreon Video - Ep 07 - 3D Camera Tracking

Starting something new! Been having this idea in mind for quite some time and finally wanted to start working on it.

I want to merge a lot of different methods and techniques that I have gathered over the years and see if I can create a long single take animation following a 2D character through a 3D environment.

My idea is to start off with filmed footage that I track and that will then act as the driver for the animation. None of the actual footage will be seen in th...

Hey! Here is the new Youtube video about the characters!

I had a blast making this one, creating some short scenes to show off how customizable the 3D character I made is.

Patreon Video - Ep 06 - Environments for my 3D Characters

I went for a week of camping which was epic! First thing I did when I got back tho was to record this video as I wanted to share more of what I explored last week. This time we look at the scene I posted the other week and how I can integrate my newly created characters into a scene.

I got a bunch of ideas I want to explore with these and I think it will push my style into a new direction a bit which I am ok with.  Its always fun to develop and investigate new avenues. <...

Patreon Video - Ep 05 - 3D Character Walkthrough

Here is a demo of my character for you!

I have uploaded him to the Elder asset folder so you can play around with the same one if you are interested. https://www.patreon.com/posts/36028038

I will keep exploring how I can use these guys and I wanna make some more videos about shading and scene building as well so stay tuned for that.

Heading out for a week of camping now, but looking fo...

Scene building

I got so excited about my characters that I had to try them in a scene of some kind.

I decided to build a back street alley and let my characters be part of some kind of street fight circle. The fact that I can use the Mixamo rigs for these allows me to quickly mock up a scenario with animated characters in it. If I don't like the concept I can swap out the animation for something else.

I also did some further R&D on how to get a cool style for the backgrounds that land somewh...

3D Character set - Development

Oi I'm excited for this!
To not completely loose myself in the development of my film Obsession, I have been wanting to explore a shorter side project where I can push my limit and try out new things.

I thought having a project like that could be a cool thing for the Patreon page. Something we can dive into details with over here.

So whats up with these characters? I had the idea the other day that maybe I could create a set of 3D characters that would render looking a bit 2D ...

Patreon Video - Ep 04 - Plant Brushes

This time I recorded a real time demo for you guys as I wanted to show you how I create my plant brushes. I have also included them all in the Elder asset folder, which you can find here ( https://www.patreon.com/posts/36028038 ).

I did go over this before in a YouTube video a long time ago but I have found some new methods I think are cool and that makes the plants more random and organic.

Patreon Video - Ep 03 - 3D Space Station

Hey!

Finally got another Patreon episode done for you guys!
In this I thought I would go back to an old scene I did for my film Sensations and show you a bit of how that was made. At first I think this scene looks very complex but by just breaking down what it contains I think it shows that you can make pretty complex looking geometry using just a lot of copies of simple things.

Maybe we can take a look at a few other scenes from the film as I think there is a lot of shots tha...

Painting Rocks!

None of the images you see here are finished but I sometimes think its interesting to see half finished pieces from other artist so I thought I would give you some of that here.

These backgrounds have been good practice when it comes to lighting.
Rocks are interesting to paint as they often tend to have angular shapes that catches different mounts of light. Its almost like low poly 3D. One must try to imagine each plane and how much light would hit it.
I find that using very subt...

Painting backgrounds.

This piece is coming together. I am currently painting the background for the shot and wanted to give you guys an update on how its going.
I am really enjoying the perspective in this one and I think the main challenge is to get the sense of depth. By leaving a large part of the shot blank (just stone surface) I think we get the sense of the height of the rock which I like.

This scene was purely painted in Photoshop, so I did not use any 3D this time.  I still need to add...

Lip Syncing Episode

Hey!

Just finished a new video and wanted to share it here with you guys first. Here I explore some lip syncing for my characters. I am relatively new to this but its a fun exercise.

Have any of you done anything involving lip syncing for 2D characters? Feel free to let me know below. Always fun to hear if you have some good techniques and what you found challenging etc.

I really enjoy drawing mouth shapes after this. I think it was something I had not explored enough ...

Setting up my new office

Just moved into the new flat and have started to build up the office here. Still in an ocean of moving boxes but I have been able to find some time to work on a new video. As promised in the last one I want to show you how I do lip syncing so that will be what we focus on in this next episode.

I will release it here on Patreon first before it goes live on YouTube.

Stay tuned!

Early access to my next video

Hi guys,

Just finished up a new video for YouTube, but thought I would share it here with you first before releasing it to the world :).
I have been working on and off on this section of the film. Whenever I feel like animating characters I work on this bit. Slowly but steadily it is coming along.
I still need to paint the backgrounds for these shots, but the next step I will tackle is probably the lip syncing for the character I colour in this episode.

Hope you enjoy the e...

Moving Home and Office!

Hi guys!

Been a busy few weeks of work and on top of that, next week we are moving to a new apartment here in Innsbruck. We will have a larger office in this new one so really looking forward to that. If you guys are interested I might share some photos of how it is coming along once we are settled in. Jana, my girlfriend is also creating content (DIY etc) so will be cool to have large workspace together in which we can both be creative.

Hope you guys are doing well. I...

Only painting.

I just finished painting this mountain landscape. It will be a shot in the film establishing a location and giving the viewer a sense of scale of the environment. I really enjoyed the slightly simpler process for this where I just worked with one software (Photoshop) and kept it less technical.

I am in the middle of putting together a Youtube video about this shot so that should drop soon.

Early version of a new shot

Started working on this shot today and thought I would share a bit of a progress update. It is missing a lot of details but I often start by trying to get the essence of the shot done before committing to painting all the final details.

I will add a 3D camera movement to this to add some parallax to the foreground. It gives a nice cinematic touch to the scene and creates a nice flow for the edit.

When animating the car driving I made sure to add some key frames to the rotati...

My films antagonist

Slowly but steadily I'm adding shot by shot to a collection that will eventually turn into my film named Obsession. This piece will be a bridging shot between scenes showing time passing. The boulder in the middle is what you could describe as the antagonist of the film. Its not an evil thing in itself, but it will be what my two protagonists tries to combat.

I think I will keep using a similar technique for most of the grass through-out the film as I think it really adds a nice touch.<...

Patreon Video - Ep 02 - Field of Grass

The second episode is here!

I love to explore ways to use 3D, but to sort of hide it and subtly blend it with my 2D approach. In this latest shot for my film I think I found a nice balance for the grass. It doesn't look like a flat texture on a surface and not overly 3D detailed either. I like how it still feels painted but that it allows me to move a camera over it and individually animate it.

I will upload a video on my YouTube showing the same shot but covering more of th...

Next video - Topic

Thanks for all the suggestions on what we could look into in the next Patreon video.

It looks like a lot of you want to see more 3D oriented workflows so I think it could be cool to keep going in the same direction we did for the last video. I am currently creating a background for my film that I would make a Youtube video about but I thought we could break it down a bit more here on Patreon and go into the details of how it was done.

It would involve mixing my 2D and 3D wor...

Coloured Animation

Hey!

I had a few hours yesterday which I could spend on putting my outlined animation to colour.
Always feels good to complete something and since I spent a long time on this one it makes me happy when it actually turns out in a way that I like.

Colour shapes in comparison with just outlines are a bit more forgiving when it comes to spotting inconsistencies between frames. A outline animation will straight away show up as jerky or wobbly if its in-between's are not perfect but ...

Patreon Video - Ep 01- Camera Mapping

Hi my friends!

First episode is now out exclusively here on Patreon!
In this one we look at how I use the method of camera mapping to blend a 3D and 2D world into one.

I am always looking for new methods to develop my style and elevate the quality of my work. I think a big part of the fun, when creating an animated film, is to figure out the tricks and methods to use to solve certain problems that we face during the creation process.

This method has definitely brought me ...

First ''Patreon Only Video'' dropping soon!

Hey guys!

Hope you are all doing well!
I will release the first Patreon video tomorrow where we will go into depth about Camera mapping! This will be available for the Master and Elder tiers to watch.

Going forward from here I will gather your suggestions for what to tackle in the next one. But I thought it would be cool to have something here already.

Got the in-betweens done

I'm doing some good progress on the shot I went over in my last videos. The last thing you guys saw was me drawing the key frames for this shot. I'm really happy with how this turned out and the next steps will be to colour it.
For this film that I am creating I have a somewhat line less style to the characters, so this shot will look quite different when completed.

This first pass of drawn lines helps a lot as now the entire animation is easy to convert to colours only. I mig...

Exploring new methods

Hi my friends!

I have been busy working on the film and I'm really feeling motivated! For every new project, I try to challenge myself and learn new things. This one is no exception as I have now started to dive into the world of lip-syncing and animating  my characters to audio.  This is an area I haven't fully explored before and it is really fun to work out new methods that will allow me to do it well.

I am just about to put up a new video on my YouTube Channel c...

Working on things

Hey friends!

I am currently working on some exciting ideas for upcoming videos. I was thinking of making a series of episodes on the overall process that goes into making animated films. I want to break them into Pre-production, production and post and so on. I would share my take on each step and specifically focus on the challenges and advantages that comes by being alone on my projects.

The fact that Austria is on a bit of a lockdown due to the Corona virus situation will limit...
