Digital Saturday 🤓

Heya friends,

today was again without any benchtime (it's becoming a standard 😫), but of course I spent some quality time at the digital workbench. Turns out all 3D parts which I made before I bought the model were completely inaccurate and overly large (how shocking 😂), so I did some of them all over again, using measurements from the kit.

It seems to me that some of them might push the printer to the limit, and they already might be beyond what's printable. Guess I'l...

Look what arrived today!

IT'S. SO. BIG.

Also, CHECK OUT the last two photos! Those are my 3D models for the Kondensator, test-printed by my good friend on his Elegoo Mars. It's doable! I'm absolutely blown away by the amount of detail... like... seriously 🤯

Hope I'll be able to print just as well as he does! BTW, I already ordered the Anycubic Photon  🤩

Amigos, you know I'm not really the type of person who likes to blow his own whistle, but damn, these turned out so good!

She's got the battle worn look!

Finally! All the chipping layers and rust tones are done! Now it's time to put it into a video!

Remember how I mentioned that it all took like, forever? After scrolling back I found it's been exactly 1 week since I started this process... not bad I suppose? Considering it took me more than 3 weeks and 3 separate videos on the Chi-Ri...

But well, there's still some chipping to be done on the Zimmerit, and I'm so looking forward to that because I've never done it before....

Rust started eating the Tiger!

My amigos, seems like I underestimated the situation. I was only able to corrode the turret and the wheels... I mean, damn... but tomorrow I'll definitely finish the hull!

A little observation, since I haven't  done this before - blended rust tones look so good on panzer grey. Very subtle, and they enhance that metal panzer look. Also, did you notice that I fixed the chipping on the gun sleeve? That one section I said I'll leave as it is? 😆

Some other HD pictures

Hey guys, I'm sorry for not providing you with enough high quality pictures, as my progress was a little slower over the past week. I thought I'd post something else for a change, an Object 279 which I built about 2 years ago but still haven't painted it. Hope you'll like it!

Another thing I've been playing with

So, as you can tell, I've been entertaining myself over the past couple of nights with 3D modelling. Modelling and printing in 3D is something I always dreamed about but always considered  unreal, because I simply don't have the time to learn how to operate a dedicated 3D software. A friend of mine who's a 3D printing enthusiast showed me this browser-based software called Onshape which is extremely easy to learn and here are some of my first models.

Now of course as you're p...

Ant attack is finally over

My friends, I'm pleased to inform you that the chipping stage is finished. Well, almost.

First of all, please accept my apology for not being active over the last couple of days. Again, weekend meant some duties around the house (as usual 😄) and I also needed to get some fresh air. I kept working on the model in short sessions, but nothing remarkable, and I also did something else, which I'll show you in a separate post.

So, about the chipping... well, it was again pretty time ...

Ant attack continues

Well well well, the turret is chipped!

And yes, each chip is individually painted, no sponge or anything.

Gotta say I like this steel color. The model won't even need that many enamel rust tones, mostly just around the largest chips.

The dark steel chipping is always more rewarding, but also takes longer than the superficial layer. Oh well, but that's nothing new.

The only place I'm not happy with is the top of the gun sleeve. It's the result of...

Ants!

Ants started eating the Tiger! 🤣

I'm almost done with the superficial chipping, just need to finish the back plate and the model will be ready for the steel chips.

I'm honestly surprised by how fast the chipping stage is progressing. Back in summer of last year when I was chipping the Chi-Ri, which is similarly large, it took me 1 week for each layer.

Also, initially I wanted to make this into one big video about chipping, rust and zimmerit chipping, but I'll ...

More invisible progress 😄

Alright my friends, we're finally getting to the legit stage!

Today I finished refining the HS chipping on the hull, and started with the light superficial chips. And because I wasn't very patient and wanted to see how it'll look with the deeper steel chips, I gave it a try on one side. As I said several times, steel chipping on panzer grey must be a different color than the usual dark grey, so I mixed Panzer Aces Dark Rust and Vallejo Flat Brown in 50/50 ratio, which not only contrasts...

Back at it again

Finally back at the workbench! And we're starting with the chipping process...

But first I fixed the panzer grey, which was very bright and saturated, with a quick random wash of very dark grey oil paint.

Then I started refining the HS chipping with a paintbrush, first the panzer grey chips with Lifecolor paints, and then the dark yellow ones with Ammo paint. I still have to finish those tomorrow, but the turret and front half of the hull is done. Now mind you this is not th...

HD pics!

My friends, here are some legit pictures (finally).

Tomorrow we're starting with the chipping! And I also kinda feel like the panzer grey needs to be a little darker towards the bottom... it looks very 2-dimensional compared to the turret. Eh, dumb me, I should've seen that earlier! Guess I'll have to fix that as well.

Well well well

It seems like the oil stage is done. Luckily enough it turned the model into something more presentable 🤣

Today I just added a few more shadow/dirt and also light effects on the turret, also added a very thin filter over the numbers to make them slightly lighter (like on the bw photos) but I also used some thinned acrylic filters (glazes?) over the dark yellow parts to make them slightly more german yellow, because they were quite off. I'll use this method more in the upcoming days t...

That's it for today...

Well, I took my time with the oil paints and didn't manage to finish the turret today. Oh well, I'll instead go to sleep earlier than usual and finish it tomorrow.

Pretty much kept using the same oils like I did earlier today on the zimmerit and I totally went to town on this one - it might save some time later as some parts already look like finished pieces 😄

I also blended some light grey over the pz.grey parts because I found them to be too dark in contrast with the rest. Th...

Quick update

Hey mates, just a quick update, started with the oil paints today and I think the results are exactly what the Tiger needed. So far I'm only focusing on the Zimmerit, but I'll finish the rest later during the day.

Just like I expected, wash is not a good idea over Zimmerit, I think oil paints are the way. More precisely, very diluted local washes which are blended further with enamel thinner, you just sort of let it flow into the pattern. I only used a very light green (olive gree...

UPDAYT

Wow... just spent the whole day washing the Tiger. It sure takes some time!

The whole time I kept thinking if I should apply the wash into the zimmerit. At the end of the day (literally lol, it's 2:40 am) I decided to thin it into the consistency of a filter and apply it in random small spots which I then blended. The only place where I added more was under the missing side skirts where dirt would accumulate.

Anyhoo, next step is ambient occlusion, some highlights and ...

EL PROGRESSO

Yay, oil dots are done!

At first I thought giving the whole model a light brown filter might be essential, but then decided against it and applied it only on the "new" and replaced parts - cupola, gun barrel and wheels.

Then I just blended a lot of oil dots over the entire model. On the green parts it was olive drab, buff, ochre and white. On the dark yellow - white, buff, ochre. And on the panzer grey - white and panzer grey (yeah I actually found a "panzer grey" oil ...

Weekend update

Hey there mates,

sorry for taking 2 days off, I needed a short break and there were, as usual, some duties around the house 😁

In the meantime I finished painting the Tiger, everything is sealed under 2 light coats of satin varnish and ready for some oil paint treatment. TBH, after not focusing on this model for 2 days I'm actually kinda happy with it. I think it might become a pretty unique model in the end and not "another Tiger". If everything goes well of course!

More painting madness!

This paintjob is all over the place! Not gonna lie, this might be the most difficult model I ever painted - there's no color photographs, which naturally would make everything easier, and most importantly - the colors which were used on the real tank are, how should I put it... not exactly easy to pull off like for example a Russian winter camo.

What I'm really happy about is the pale olive green tone, it's basically the same as I made in the Photoshop color profile, just a tad li...

Update!

aaaand it's a completely different Tiger! and it looks like crap! 🤣

But hey, it's mostly the masking fluid which makes the model look repulsive (or more than it is lol) as all the tasty stuff is hidden underneath it.

Well I mixed the Dark Yellow to be more like White Yellow lol, I wanted it veeeeeery pale so it'll make a good base for the green and also for the upcoming filters, washes and oil dots. Very similar to how I painted the Rutscher, but this time it's even more ...

Updateeee

Goodbye shiny Tiger, welcome Panzer Grey Tiger 😁

The bottom grey coat is all done, base layer + simple distressing (just a layer of lighter paint over a heavy chipping fluid) and varnished with satin clear. I also did the distressing on those places which will be completely covered with yellow and green, mostly because I didn't have anything better to do, and because it's gonna be almost invisible, I didn't try to make any intricate patterns like on the sides where the Zimmerit is mi...

Daily update... finally!

Well well well, the Tiger construction video is finally done (it'll be the longest video so far, 25 minutes!) and the narration will be... interesting in a few places (let's say I was about 80% sober while narrating).

So, with the build video out of the way I prepared the Tiger for painting, it's all disassembled and washed with soapy water. Now I'm just letting it dry until tomorrow. In the meantime I did some more testing with the new Tamiya paints holy s*** I ran out of white p...
