Original Designs for Norm's Family

It was always a question what kinda of animals Norm's family would be made up of. I thought it would be hilarious if Norm's mom was a duck and his father a beaver and they made a platypus. But in the end we kept it so each child would resemble either parent. Norm resembles his dad (a platypus) and Jeremy would have resembled their mom (a duck).

In other strips Maureen's dad was depicted as an arctic fox. Her daughter Lily is a cat (so the dad was probably a cat).

Rough comic sketches

For the first two years I started drawing the My Cage comic strips, they were drawn and inked on paper. They were then scanned into the computer for clean up, lettering, and color. After hundreds of sheets of paper started piling up around the house, I decided to draw the comic strips directly on the computer using a Wacom tablet. If you followed the strip closely, you might be able to notice where I started transitioning from paper to digital.

Monthly Post Update

Happy August,

This coming month we'll have 5 comic updates along with some sketches and roughs (I need to scan in, haha).

As a heads up, the next string of strips will be a continuous storyline. As we're all used to reading the original strip daily, we hope you don't find these next few a bit slow paced. (They'll be good, I promise!)

And don't forget to tell all your friends at the school yard how cool we are! If we reach our next mil...

Ok, so we've been up a little over a month, and I think everything is going pretty well, but let us know how we can do better. Anything you'd like or think we could do better? As a follow up to my last post, here are the colors I wanted for Jeff, Maureen, and Norm. The Maureen one I really pushed for because I get kind of tired of the 'blonde = hot' thing with female characters, but we used to get emails from moms thinking us for making the girl everyone was attracted to a mom, so I'll count that as a win. :)

It's weird when you work for a comics syndicate. There are things you don't think about. For instance, we didn't get to pick the colors for the characters. The syndicate's art department did. On the upside, the colors where partially picked to make the characters "pop" on a shelf because out then editor was sure there would be toys made of the characters. HA!
