thanks again to shae & coldau for suggesting a monster of the month design involving glowing embers!
from the start i had a pretty good idea of how to illustrate the ember aesthetic, as based on the smouldering charcoals of a fire. i wanted to combine the warm and orange glow from within with the blue-ish ash that covers the outside of embers when they start to cool and the 'scaly' look of dark charcoal chunks after the heat is all gone.

alva and batu have been around for a long time, but i've never really drawn them much. in fact this is the first time i've ever sketched batu, and i'd only drawn some preliminary concept doodles of alva's design. since the january OC spotlight is about alva i felt compelled to finally figure out what he looks like -- not to mention pester kubi about telling me how to draw batu.
