This week we look at another classic monster, the orc, who sadly caps out at CR 4, though there is a demonic version of it at CR 5. These powerful warriors are capable of having a longer lasting impact on a campaign, and I thought it'd be fun to give them a few more abilities than just the basic, official stat blocks provide.
Orc Calvary (CR 5) Worg riders, ogre riders, and more - the orc calvary find themselves charging into battle on the back of mounts, ready to prove...

I've had a number of monks in my campaigns, and it can be quite the challenge to figure out good magic items for them, especially since the official ones are rather lacking in options for them. I've made handwraps, gauntlets, swords, and more for them, and today I've created a few more that you can pass off to your monks that are fairly specific to them.
Of course, many other classes could benefit from these magic items, but monks will get the greatest use out of them due to havin...

There have been several guardian-type creatures in the history of D&D. Some were employed to guard treasure while others might guard holy sites or places. You can even find spells that summon a guardian to keep you protected, like guardian of faith which summons a spectral guardian to smack anyone that moves too close to its set location.
The Shield Guardian is one such protector and is probably the best protector that money can buy. Created by spellcasters to pro...

I have weird feelings about monks. On one hand, I really like the idea of a punch man. On the other hand, I don't really like monks as a concept. I've never played as a monk, though as a GM, I've had plenty of monk assassins try to kill the party (they fail a lot). Something about the core monk just doesn't sit well with me, and I think its partly due to monks not really feeling different from each other and not really having much else than just... I hit things. I stun things. I hit things mo...

To bring more original and interesting content, Magic Item Monday Is now Magic & Maps Monday. I've been playing around with Dungeondraft for a while and want to start sharing some of the maps I've been working on.
Today's maps are the first three train cars from a one-shot Stephen ran last year. I picture the engine as an elemental/coal hybrid, with the elemental used during most of the trip and coal when the train needs to slow down for a stop along the route. The first-class ...

Let’s say hello to everyone’s favorite bi-pedal amphibious humanoid, the Bullywug. Trudging through a dank swamp or bog is terrible enough. When these frog-faced creatures emerge from the shadows, you’ll wonder why you ever left the tavern. They have varied in strength throughout the editions but have always been rather weak and weak-willed creatures. However, what they lack in brute force, they make up with in sheer numbers.

Assassins are fascinating, and I never realized that Assassin's Creed was based on the first true assassins in Earth's history with the Order of Assassins created by Hamdan Qarmat back in 1090 CE. From there, the legends of assassins spread throughout the world, and we have thousands of middle schoolers believing that if they just learn the sword, they'll get so many girlfriends... though that might just be me.
Disciple Assassin (CR 3) Many of the original assassins wer...

Have you ever wished to drop it all and run away to another plane of existence? You can do just that with the Adventurer's Guide to Planar Travel. Swim throughout the Plane of Water. Hike the mountains of the Plane of Earth. Float aimlessly in the Astral Sea. Whatever your desire (or death wish), the Guide can take you there.
This magic item was inspired by two totally different things. I was reading about the Codex of Infinite...don't mention the rest and get in trouble with WotC, but ...

We’ve been doing Deep Dives for over three years now, and it’s about time we’ve gotten around to the Tarrasque. The most dreaded of all monsters, the Tarrasque is the culmination of many a campaign. This massive behemoth is the ultimate predator of life, and its origins stretch far into our real-world past. As talked about in Dragon #329 (March 2005) in the article The Petite Tarrasque and Other Monsters by Kyla Ward, its first stories begin in Provence, located in sou...

This week we look at some powerful elementals to stride across your world and destroy it. While the original elemental titans were locked away long ago, primordials still produce these minor titans to fill in the gap that exists in higher level play. See, the purpose of these elementals is to create an elemental (like a fire elemental) that exists in Tier 3 play as there isn't really anything there. We have the basic elemental at CR 5, we have Myrmidons at CR 7, great elementals like the Phoe...

My son plays in a D&D club at school and when I pick him up we spend the entire ride home talking about the latest session. One day this led to a discussion on magic items as each member of the party could buy an uncommon magic item. I recommended a Bag of Tricks as it was fun throwing random beasts at people. We decided that the badger was the coolest, which led to talking about the bag of badgers. Hence, there's now a bag of badgers.
I've been having fun creating figurines of wond...

The Hag is a staple monster for any group of adventurers to fight. They often take the form of beautiful women, using their unassuming form to spread their evil and poison across the lands. There are all sorts of Hags, from those who live in swamps to those in the ocean. They disguise their forms, hoping to lure in unsuspecting children, and adventurers, hoping to turn them into meat pies and potion ingredients.
