Hey everybody, I'm working on a new video that demonstrates some simple, and not so simple, foundational rhythmic ideas in 7/8 time. The goal of the lesson isn't to show examples of flashy guitar playing in 7/8, but rather give you guys a handle on the basic divisions of the meter and some simple variations. I really recommend practicing these rhythms to a metronome. Also check out the MP3 track as that will give you guys the aural experience of wha...

Here are a selection of some of my favourite riffs from the Indie Rock world (transcribed by me, so hopefully they are accurate!). Harmonically I think these have a lot of crossover with stuff from Math Rock and Emo so you guys will probably dig them. See attached for the PDF.
Here are the tunes I've chosen:

As the title says. Here are 5 really useful minor 7 arpeggio patterns. I use these all the time in my writing and they really help with mapping out the fretboard. Cheers!

For those looking to try a new scale, this is a pretty fun one to play with. At first it might seem a little ugly or unsettling but after a while I find that it starts to sound pretty interesting.

Hey guys, here's a new piece of theory that I've worked out. This is an arpeggio pattern that I think best captures the aesthetics of "pretty" Math Rock and Midwest Emo.
The pattern here focuses on the sound of a MA7Sus2 chord or a MA9 chord without a 3rd. This sound is frequently used as the basis for many open tunings in the midwest emo idiom.
However, I've also included a variant on this arpeggio that adds the 6th degree of the chord to create a sound that could also be h...

Here are a few ideas that are based on Major 7 Arpeggio patterns. These are some of my favourite structures to work with and this should give you guys a little bit of an idea of how I approach writing using arpeggio patterns. See attached for a PDF and audio file.

An original theory I've come up with of a custom scale that is highly applicable to math rock
BLURB: "
The Math Rock / Emo Scale is an idea derived from some observations of the harmony used in many contemporary Math Rock and Emo Revival Groups. While this scale sound isn’t used by every single band, this general harmonic concept is employed by groups that adopt the “pretty sound”, such as Totorro, Tiny Moving Parts, American Football, etc."

Another analysis of some classic emo. This analysis comes with tabs for both guitar parts, as well as jazz / lead sheet symbols. Moreover, a hell of a lot of commentary on what's going on / what makes this set of riffs sound so good.
See attached for the PDF and Guitar Pro File. Also, I've included a second version of the tab, notated in 12/4 rather than 6/4

Hey guys,
I recently did a short transcription and harmonic analysis of the intro riff to the song "Always Focused" by Tiny Moving Parts. See attached for a Guitar Pro File, and the PDF of my findings. The analysis breaks down the types of chords and scales used by the band, as well as some of compositional tricks in the riff. The goal with analyzing something like this is so that we can reverse engineer the idea in order to write similar ones. Theres' a bit of jargon-y music theory lan...

A neat little thing I put together which shows all of the diatonic chords in both Major and Minor keys, as well as seventh chords, and possible extensions.
This document includes tables and examples in the keys of C major and A minor. I highly recommend printing this out, or at the very least, giving it a good study.
Have fun and happy learning,

Ok so tonight I made an attempt to put something together that is similar to my 6 major scale patterns document for standard tuning but for FACGCE instead. However, one thing that I quickly ran into was the fact that it is basically impossible to play two octave major scales in FACGCE without using massive position shifts.
So, to offer a solution to that, I've decided to just create 8 groupings of notes that contain all of the notes that ...

Hey everybody, I've decided to update a previous document that had a list of formulas for creating chords. This new document is hopefully more clear, thorough, and useful. I've expanded the previous document by adding tables that include the formulas for chords, example spellings, and the appropriate chord symbolizations.
See attached to check it out, I recommend printing this out and putting it up in the wall of your practice space!

After over a year since I created a series on "How to Play in DAEAC#E", I have finally gotten around to completing the series, ending things off with a feature on minor chord shapes in this tuning. I'll be releasing the video soon, though here is a chord chart to get the ball rolling for you all. See attached.
