On the Subject of Divinity

“Here you are Mr. George.” The waitress placed a steaming coffee mug on the table.

Henson George looked up from his newspaper and gave her a polite nod with an approving smile. He folded the crackling sheets of gray newspaper print and placed them to the side.

It was a Friday night, almost closing time, and the restaurant was nearly empty. He liked coming around this time because he could read the paper and enjoy a cup of coffee in peace. Many large companies were building the...

The Wise Wicca

First off, let me say this has to be my favorite stand-alone sketch of my characters that Daryl has made thus far.

Second, meet Gam. She's Norman's grandmother and the leader of the Red Cove coven.

When I first wrote her character into existence, I wanted her to be strong, confident, and highly skilled with magic. I didn't want her to follow that "wise old character type" theme most stories use though because I knew most people would immediately compare her to the like...

Regarding the Disappearance of Martha Walsh

Martha Walsh sneezed.

Dust scattered from the row of books in front of her, floating and dancing in the air like clumpy, gray snowflakes.

“Shit.” She said, adjusting her glasses and wiping her runny nose with her handkerchief.

The 17th-century occult manuscript she had been studying was now covered in dust bunnies and mucus. Sighing, she cleaned and placed the manuscript back in its protective plastic sleeve and returned it to its numbered placeholder on the booksh...

The Sword in the Stone

Concealed in the tall grass of the forest floor, a bush rabbit cleaned herself. The quiet hush of the foggy Irish morning crept slowly into the woodlands.

A subtle southern wind carried the fog to embrace the woodland critters like a blanket of cold mist. The ancient trees creaked and moaned. Their frightened spirits shook free of their bark, fleeing deeper into the darker green of the forest.

Something was coming.

The bush rabbit’s ears perked and flicked in t...

Cora

Cora is a character I've been DYING to introduce to this series. She's our lovable, lesbian pyromaniac and will be making her debut in Chapter 3 :)

Gamigin

Technically, this is my first personal sketch of Gamigin which is super strange for me. When Daryl and I would create my characters in his style, I had sketches of my own to show him as a base/example of how I wanted characters to look.

But not Gamigin.

I think it's because I hadn't really thought of Gamigin's character until after we started Chapter 2 and I hadn't had time to sketch out my ideas of him. I pretty much sent Daryl 5 example images from Pinterest and said "Make...

Norman and Cal Sketchdump

I didn't have time to sketch anything new today, so I figured I'd still make a post with all of my own personal sketches of Norman and Cal from the past 2 years. I will be making two sketches for tomorrow to compensate.

I excluded some early sketches because damn my drawing was horrible back then, but I love looking back on all this and seeing how far I've come since 2017.

Thank you all so much for walking this journey with me. I love this story and these characters so much <3 ...

Comic Update 006 - 10/1/19

HEY COMIC FRIENDS

It's officially SPOOPY MONTH 👻

Time for all the demons and other shits to come out of the shadows to party! MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *insert cackling laughterrrrrr*

But in all seriousness, I love Halloween. It's my favorite time of year.

Kinda as an Inktober thing for the BKI Patreon, I'm planning to release a butt-ton of sketches of my characters, written short...

Comic Script 005 - Chapter 2, Page 49

Hello hello helllooooo

For this month's script post, I wanted to show you guys one of the Belphegor pages that didn't have any text bubbles on it. I love seeing how Daryl takes my writing and transforms it into something I hadn't envisioned before. It's so cool how writing is visualized differently for everyone.

Daryl really took this idea and ran with it, but it turned out so freaking cool. My original vision was to have 3 different panels and highlight each memory like a flashba...

Patron Pledge Issue

Hey everyone,

It has come to my attention that some Patrons have been editing their pledges up to $5 so they can read the current pages, then readjusting back down to $1 so they don't have to pay extra.

I want to reemphasize that I write and produce 100% of this story out of my own pocket so readers like you can enjoy the story, but I can't keep doing it in a financially sustainable way completely on my own dime. That's why the Patreon tiers are set up the way they are now.<...

Corruption

Norman's character has been one of my favorite things to write because I always try to change him. He started off as this cocky, arrogant straight-ish, masc character, but eventually evolved into the quirky and shy ball of embarrassment he is today. And I like him like that.

I think Norman represents more of how I project myself in public: grade-A socially awkward. But I think what I tried to change most about Norman is his confidence in his openly Gay self. Sure, he gets embarras...

Comic Script 004 - Chapter 2, Page 50

Hey friends!

So for this comic script post, I asked on discord what script pages you guys wanted to see and a majority of people said they wanted to see the interactions with Bel and Cal. For the next couple of months I'll be covering those pages.

The first page that I wanted to share was page 50. I LOVE how Daryl took my script and made something above and beyond what I had imagined. First, the fact that he made the art take up the entire page was a great choice ...

The Beginning of BKI

Norman and Cal started out very differently when I first wrote out the beginnings of BKI. First, Cal used to be a werewolf, and Norman's name used to be Dom. They were going to fight crime as a supernatural detective duo/blossoming gay romance. Maybe it's the furry in me, but I love werewolf stories. I'm sure you could totally pick up on it considering I added the whole "soulmates" bit and how wolves mate for life, etc. etc.

And the story wasn't even called "Black Key Incubus" until I h...

Comic Update 004 - 8/2/19

Hey peeps!

For this comic update I wanted to open the floor for discussion, particularly the tiers system I currently have in place. I want to make some changes and I want your feedback to help improve and make the most of it. Here's what I was thinking:

First, I'm going to be removing the shirt and the PDF copies of the pages from the rewards tier for the benevolent demons.

Caster, Norman from FGO by Solkorra

I love the Fate anime series and the accompanying game, Fate Grand Order. Mostly because I'm such an anime and history nerd. The fact that the series combines both makes my inner fanboy SQUEEEEE.

@Solkorra on Instagram is AMAZING at the Fate-style anime and animation. She turned my beloved wiz-boy Norman into a Caster-class servant from the Fate series 😍

I can't stop gushing over this piece. it's one of my favorite things ever. Hopefully she opens commissions so I can do Cal as...

Brothers

It's funny, Cal and Bel have always been brothers in my mind since the moment I thought of the key antagonists to introduce into the BKI storyline. First, I created the dynamic between Norman and Cal (their arc, story, development ideas, and eventual conflict). I HAD to start with my gay couple, right? I mean, they were the center of the story. After that, I wanted to dive into their character backstories. I had so many swirling ideas for Norman that I was almost afraid to write about him fir...

Comic Script 003 - Chapter 1, Page 17

Hey hey

Here is the script preview for how I wrote page 17 from Chapter 1!

This page really got to me when I was writing it. It was kinda a creative stretch for me because I wanted to create an incantation of magic, but I don't really have a background in Latin. So, like a dingus I wrote stuff down and eventually edited/changed a lot from this scene in terms of dialogue because I just felt it wasn't "strong" enough.

Daryl really helped me break up the original scripted...

Norman and Cal, DnD Adventurers by John Burke

Here's the first commission I've done for Norman and Cal :)

This wonderful piece is by @magik_jack_art on Instagram. I've been playing a lot of DnD with my family on weekends, and I wondered what my boys would look like if they were traveling adventurers in the DnD universe.

Norman is clearly the wizard, I mean duh lol. And Cal is like...an anti-paladin, except he's more chaotic neutral than lawful evil.

I love this piece so much haha. It feeds my inner ...

Mirrors and Secrets

"Reflected" by Daryl Toh, commissioned by James Schleisman (Me)

The second BKI commission I had daryl create back in 2017. When he asked me what I wanted him to create, I knew right away I wanted to do a piece specifically about Cal. I had so many ideas in my head for how I wanted to portray him, but in this instance I wanted to show a bit of his vulnerable side.

Cal has a lot of secrets, and some of them are dangerous to the people around him, especially Norman.

Caliban the Demon

Cal's character is by far one of my favorite things I've ever written into existence. When I first started writing about him back in college, he started out as a werewolf. Over the years I rewrote everything about him dozens of times, but the one piece that never changed was his name.

Caliban.

Derived from Shakespeare's The Tempest, Cal represents everything I love in Shakespearean literature combined with my love of supernatural and demonic fantasy/fiction.

Comic Script 002 - Chapter 1, Page 11

Hi :)

Here is the script preview for how I wrote page 11 from Chapter 1!

One thing that I loved the most about this particular page was Daryl really took creative liberties and flexed his artistic talents. While I did give him a decent outline for my vision of this page, he took it to the next level and added in a lot, especially in terms of paneling and adding emotionally charged facial expressions for the characters.

This page was definitely a huge stepping stone for...
