Red Silk

This was kind of a practice painting wherein I was trying out a lot of oil technique and  just enjoying fussing with the material. So it's not great but it's something and I learned a lot. 

Salmon Days

I spent the day at a street festival up in Issaquah Washington that celebrates the return of spawning salmon. The fair part is just a regular street fair type deal but getting to see the salmon swimming up the fish ladders and the coho fry was super cool.  There were a lot of crafty artist type stalls and some. Very good ceramicists. 

The only hitch we had was that one of my group managed to get stung on the roof of their mouth by a bee. It was the craziest thing. A bee landed...

Oil painting all day!

So I got started with the new oil paintings and I’ve really been loving them. The only trouble is that they take longer, I have to be very careful of all the animal hair floating around, and I have to stick them in the oven when it’s time for a new layer to dry them out. Other than that, they really suit my kind of work style. The tubes I got are so ridiculously pigment rich it only takes a tiny dollop to finish off several small paintings. It’s nuts!

I wanted to tackle this concept again in a somewhat different way. I think perhaps I should have left the mycelium out altogether? I don't know. Art is hard! :P 

Ring Around the Rosie

Tried out my resist and new walnut ink. Still wrapping my head around ink, which pretends to be paint and then becomes semi-transparent as you go >8I   It's like one color-one thickness watercolor. 

Inktober--Ring

I was sitting here waffling over whether I wanted to get my oil paint stuff busted out (it's just so messy and stanky) and I ultimately decided to start Inktober a day early. It's... OK. I forgot how the ink behaved. I don't have a really opaque holbein so I'm working with this kind of watery higgins and I approached it mmmmmm perhaps unwisely?? I think I'll do better in the future.

Headed out on a birthday thing today (not mine) so no new stuff but here's some gesture drawing and just doodles.

My Loot!

I lost all my oil paint, brushes, water soluble oil and open acrylic in the move. Which just.....  I’m trying not to be infuriated, but it was a lot of expensive supplies. This little splurge cost me $240. But it’s all brand new and I’m very excited to paint with oil again!

Baarrf I tried to upload these last night but Patreon was having some kind of flipout and wouldn't post. I've got my fingers crossed it works today. 

Spent yesterday gathering reference at the wildlife park. It's not very easy as most of it is in heavy shade, but I got a few decent ones for painting ref and the rest can just be for studies. Here are some of the better ones.

Today I went to a gem show!

It was held at this amazing campus—Green River College—which was like all trees. The event was smallish but that was fine. I was hoping to get some slim rough cuts to set in the covers of sketchbooks but there weren’t any so all I got was this pair of amazing turquoise and copper stones for myself. If I want to put stones in books I’ll have to order some. 

Not sure what I’ll do with the twins. I might just keep them around to admire.

Yesterday’s efforts

I didn’t get the chance to finish any new artwork yesterday but I wasn’t slacking  I prepped boards with gesso and made four sketchbooks. Which take longer than they look .-.

i think from here on out I’ll just buy board pre-gesso’d. It’s only a dollar-a few dollars more and to gesso oneself takes at least ten coats with drying and sanding between. Definitely cheaper time wise to go pre gesso’d. 

As as long as it takes to make a sketchboo...

My New Book Haul

I’m FAIR at composition but I’m not great so I got a lot of books on the subject. If any of you are interested I can do a little review of each as I read them. So far “The Painter’s Secret Geometry” is fairly obtuse and is more interesting in  a historical sense than useful to a modern artist. “The Simple Secret to Better Painting“ is highly readable and easy to follow. I def recommend it. I really like ”The Botanical Art Files: Composition” but it’s pretty specific. ...

The first Carbuncle sketchbook is finished!

i had to get yet another wire Mac for the larger wire but here it is—a nice handmade sketchbook. I’ll be sending it to Nekot, my best patron.
