Pic 1 is the good ol sketch, I never have a solid concept in mind, it's more of thinking in a flow state. 90% of the time I start with the head and "pull out" the rest of the body. Pic 1 is the base color that will end up influencing every other choice I make. It's a solid fill here, and from this point I'll start to assign color zones.

I say all the time that I love complimentary colors and it's because they not only give that pop I go for, but they have an amazing range between them. 

When you mix orange and blue, you end up with a sort of gray tone, which is very neutral and easy on the eyes.
