While I intended to have saves be forwards compatible a critical issue was discovered with the world save format that required and extensive refactor of world saves. Custom Building Prefabs are coming to the game. Players can easily copy/paste anything from windows to statues to speed up their builds. Each custom prefab is also saved to their own file. New Structure Placement System

I've rewritten the games structure placement system to support bespoke placement requirements. The new harbor structure for example needs to be placed half in water/land.

There is also better support for many buildings in the same structure. For example the observatory/library is a 2 building structure that is placed near each other & connect with roads separate from the main road network. The windmill is also a part of the harbor structure.

Optimisations

Bit of a technical post today.

I’ve spent the last few days making some much needed optimizations to Lay of the Land. I have drastically improved the games overall FPS and reduced traversal stutter.

Previously the game was CPU bottlenecked on the render thread due to huge numbers of draw calls. This resulted in poor GPU utilization. This was particularly apparent when facing away from the sun/moon during sunset/sunrise as this scenario results in the most shadow pass draw calls ...
