We continue the study live-paint! This time I'm a lot more focused on the techniques being used, so it might be right up your alley if you've been waiting for more of this and less of me just talking about various things :) No promises I won't go on tangents next time though!
In the meantime, please do feel free to join in our 2025-03-25 06:42:04 +0000 UTC

Time really flies WAY too fast... It's been 4 years?? It's a tradition I'd like to uphold so once again, let's have a great time taking a look at everyone's wonderful work! I always gain a lot of energy from this too, so I'm very much looking forward to it!
To participate in the event, simply submit your artworks here! For reference, this was2025-03-11 06:46:07 +0000 UTC

It's a test recording so please let me know your thoughts on the audio quality and how I sound! I'm quite satisfied with the new quality (I had always thought I just sounded silly in recordings), but just in cased I missed any volume setting I wanted you guys to hear it too! I'm gonna be putting up a lot of new videos this month with real time painting (and talking) so definitely ignore the "see you next month" thing at the end :)

A fully real time painting video series has been really requested so much that I finally am getting to it, thank you so much for your patience! We're kicking the series off with a study (this is the first of 3 videos, and I'm aiming to do at least 1 a week). It's also a part update/semi-podcast thing where I talk a little bit about other art-related things, so it should be a reasonably (fingers-crossed) entertaining watch or listen! Let me know what you think as always!

The process breakdown for this set is up! This was really as much of an environment set as a character one, so it was exceptionally difficult for me to balance things in a way that felt right this time. Nonetheless, I hope you've liked it and that the process can shed a bit more light on how I came to make each of these decisions! As always, feel free to leave your comments below and I will read them right away - (I was away for 5 days after posting the set itself so I'm answering your commen...

I've finally got a nice big set ready to deliver! My fantasy works are still in progress, so Irena and Yin will have to do for the time being :) It's been a really fun time creating this set - I've done a similar theme before, but this time I feel like I could capture a lot more of the actual feel and mood of the location I wanted to create. I hope you enjoy it too!
As always, I want to know what you think, so feel free to let me know! The process walkthrough video will be up a little ...

Hi everyone, I hope you're all having a nice and comfy end of year holiday! I'm just checking in with the season's greetings and a little bit of a year recap, and my thoughts for the upcoming year :) Of course, for those who are more technically inclined, the video is also a real time painting process for about 55 minutes, so there's that too!
Do note that after I've finished the recap, the remaining process is not commentated though :P
As always, I'd love to hear what you all t...

I really do need more practice drawing characters and posing them in this kind of presentation! It still takes a long time to really get it close to feeling right. Since it's winter in most of the world, I decided to use that as a theme!
Also, I drew this right after recording the COLOSO class, so that I can announce it at least with some new art (I always feel bad announcing things with old work especially...) That class is now up for public signups! If you've missed the secret patreo...

Because of all your wonderful support, it seems my course on Cinematic Illustration with COLOSO was really well received last time, so we were able to start a series of classes!
This time, this first class will be focused fully on the basics of character illustration, starting with the very foundational stuff catered for beginners. It's about a 15-hour class, and you can find it here!
Of course, being a patro...

Besides being a really interesting piece (to me!) that I was glad to create, it's evoked a pretty unique response from you guys as well I think :) So besides the usual discussion around the process walkthrough, I also talk a little about adding interest and hooks to your work. Be it for yourself, or for your audience, I think it's something that isn't talked about too much. So it was fun to share my thoughts!

It's usually pretty hard to come up with something that feels interesting, but also unique. Those tend to oppose each other in a certain way - popular themes are by definition (practically) ubiquitous. I think that's what so cool about fantasy themed stuff, there's a lot more range to explore! I think I was able to do something a little interesting this time, so I'm quite happy with it! (Definitely still need to work on the bouquet a bit more...)
What do you think? :)

We're doing a bit of a hybrid tutorial this month again!
In today's video, we're taking a look at working with shapes at various levels during the drawing process. For example, looking at shapes rather than forms and 3D structures when changing or experimenting with an alternate composition. As well as how shapes in lighting and color can also be powerful tools of managing visual language. At the same time, we'll also be of course going through and breaking down the process for this pi...

It's been awhile, thank you all so much for your patience! I'm glad to say that the recent series I'm working on is going pretty OK! For now, I just have one new illustration for you :)
Designing this character has been pretty fun, and it has really got me more into the zone of working with more historically inspired designs again. Which helps immensely when drawing fantasy style works!
It's still going to a little bit before the full series is done, but I will be creating a tutor...

Hey everyone, how have you been? I hope you are all well, and as always, thank you for your support here :)
It's been a terribly hectic past couple of weeks for me (as it always is when the year end closes in) working on various tasks that need to be sorted out!
For personal work, I've been planning a really large set of themed works (10+) which requires quite a bit of preparation, research and windup time compared to the usual. I want to keep it as a bit of an surprise...

I really enjoyed painting this one! It's not quite my comfort zone in terms of the lighting, but I enjoyed the challenge to see how I could get the character, the setting, and the light to work together in a cohesive way. For less practiced types of lighting like this, I have a harder time "previewing" or forecasting the result in my mind, so references as always come in incredibly handy to help with that.

Establishing shots are fun to do! Especially if you don't have to work in too much perspective :) It's interesting how accurate, realistic perspective has a great effect on making the scene feel much more real and relatable, yet sometimes flatter perspective gives it a really unique feel! Each approach requires a different composition style though, which is something I go through in the video.
As always, I'd love to hear any questions you have below! Thank you for your kind support and ...

It's been a long while since we've had a more technical tutorial doing more step-based instructions! This time I decided to do a quick one on dramatic lighting - covering one possible (and effective!) setup here. I go through the simple building blocks of how dramatic lighting usually works and how to set it up systematically and with little fuss!
I think this format might be useful in the future as well, it's more directional than just the more freeflow commentary, but more feasible ...

I did a couple of single illustrations last month... But man they really didn't hit the spot quite like a good ol'e set does! (Or maybe it's a sign I need to up my game with the single pieces)
It was great fun illustrating a fight scene for real (for once), after the tons of posturing and cool post battle shots. You can probably tell the monster design is still pretty haphazard, but hey, that leaves plenty of room for improvement, and remastering, next time!
Designing the tattoo ...

Having been a "product first" or art first kind of guy (it's really in my bones), I've spent all my energy on trying to improve and perfect what I create and what you guys see. I love interacting and talking with others too (especially about art), but that took quite a back seat to just - making good art -. If you've been following my work for awhile, you might notice that I rarely (read: almost never) interact online with other artists, or be very active at all outside of posting new work an...

Or rather, just an expansion of the earlier design :) - I liked quite a few aspects of the prior version, but I felt it really just need just a bit more direction to get everything to come together. A black and white sailor uniform felt just wacky enough while being recognizable and differentiated!
So here we are :) I think it feels just that slightly "off" enough for me (and hopefully you) to do a double take rather than just go "oh, another cool lady", but perhaps it's possible ...

The third process video is here :) Hopefully by the time you're seeing this, the exhibition is going well or has just concluded!
Back on topic: Portraits are challenging as always to get perfectly right, I learned quite a bit here on how to draw messily colored hair especially. Working with natural chaos in design and texture is a bit of an antithesis to my usual very technical approach, but I think the results aren't too bad!

A portrait is pretty much always customary when it comes to drawing a new character - and I drew one for our new addition as well! I would still like to evolve her design a little more. Irena and Yin both have a casual and "work" design so I think it would be good to design something that feels just as directionally strong as the qipao or the suit. This current look could be good as a casual one perhaps!
Let me know what you think as always down below, I very much enjoy hearing all of...

The second process walkthrough is here! Designing a new character is always a fun time, especially if you just let loose and go with the flow. But as always, lighting ended up being the nemesis! Just taking a more organic approach to see if I can come up with a character that's fun to draw! Ended up spending a lot more time working to put the scene together, so I feel there could perhaps be just a little more to work on for the character's design, what do you think? I'd like to create something that's a bit more distinct this time.

The big thing is finally here. It's a rare and treasured opportunity to be able to do this, and since time has allowed for it, I will be finally attending in person! And I'm already getting nervous! But I'm also looking forward to meeting many of you even more :)

The exhibitions kicks off with a limited private preview on the 19th that is accessible by free...
