Finally back and can't wait to draw and share more stuff again:)
I'm finally getting to work on a pile of ideas I've had for a while that don't quite fit into sets - here is the first, a bit of contrast between the environment and character design. It's been a while since I was "free" to just explore individual concepts in pieces, and I must say, it is really fun!
I hope you look forward to another piece coming up soon! Ideally I'd like to share 5 this September and really g...

How are you guys doing? It's been a really hectic month over here not made much easier by some unexpected doctor visits! As promised, I'm here to drop off some WIP's I've been working on whenever I could squeeze in some time. As always, I'm deliberately showing the pieces at an early stage so I spoil as little as possible. Really looking forward to September when I can finally announce an exciting upcoming event, and resume drawing full speed!
As a bonus, I'm finally fulfilling a

Hey everyone, how are you doing? Right now, I'm working on a few new pieces that I hope to take in a slightly different direction and out from the usual comfort zone! It's been fun doing the planning and drafting, and hopefully I will have some WIPs to show very soon next month.
In the midst of all that however, I'm also prepping for an upcoming event (exciting). Add on a couple of extra commitments here and there and I've found myself knee deep in things to get done! It's been a while ...

The process steps are up! As promised, I recorded these right after finishing up the pieces so it could come out while the set itself is still fresh :)
This set took a LOT longer than what I expected at first, and took quite a bit out of me to really finish things up. It's really got me considering taking a small break from sets, and delving into more individual illustrations! Much of my effort really went into figuring out how to build the scene as I saw it in my mind, and as it tends ...

Thank you all for your patience - This month's set is here, with an abundance of chili sauce! One of the things I wanted to do was to explore the "cinema/theater" type location, and it proved surprisingly difficult to get locked down.
If you saw the WIP and sketches from earlier in the month, things definitely are looking quite different in the finished product! 3/4 portraits and full body shots, as they've proven many times before, are really powerful tools in helping convey both char...

Apologies for the early month quiet as always, I've been pretty hard at work on the next set!
For today, I'm dropping off some exploration sketches I've done! I'm definitely spoiling the theme a little here, but as with before these are the "discarded" sketches - I feel they each have their strengths, but just lack that little bit of magic that make them really work fully. (Sketch 1 is definitely something I want to finish though, just perhaps not with the upcoming set!)
As alwa...

For those who've been around for a while, you may remember the initial rejected version of this piece that I showed! After quite a bit of planning and redrawing, it was finally done - and served as a tutorial piece for 3dtotal's latest instructional book along side many other artists' work.
Needless to say I'm unfortunately not at liberty to actually reveal and review everything I wrote in that capacity, but the regular breakdown and walkthrough is still on the menu!
As always, ...

The process steps for this month's set is up!
This was quite a mixed bag of difficulties for me, with the first piece being the most daunting, and the ones after being surprisingly smooth sailing (maybe I missed something!). Either way, I had quite a bit of fun working on it, and I was really heartened to see many of your positive responses and kind words.
As always, feel free to let me know any specific questions you have, and thank you so much for all the amazing support! One m...

I had a blast working with this set! More so than just capturing lighting, I wanted to create the full atmosphere of such a scene as closely as I could. It definitely gave me quite a push towards rethinking how certain aspects of light should be used - for example, how to really express bright light beyond just pushing the HSB (Hue, Saturation, Brightness) sliders to max, and the effect light bloom can have on the scene.
I also had a bit of fun making a movie style poster with the f...

Surprise artwork!
Gothic style armor, despite it's need for details and motifs, somehow feels a lot more intuitive (and thus fun) to draw! It's also very rewarding watching the details come together to help sell the piece and composition as a whole at the very end of the process.
Filling in the scene with a good backdrop was quite a challenge though, as I really wanted something quite concrete (rather than depth-of-field blurred) to help build the scene. With some research I was ...

The process steps are up (quickly this time!) as promised.
I go through each of the pieces as well as the rejected drafts and my thinking behind them, talking about some new lessons I've learnt tackling this latest set. I also took the chance to answer some of the questions you guys put in the comments as well, so please do keep them coming (in the comments below too!) :)
Otherwise, I hope you find the process breakdown helpful, and thank you so much for your support as always!

It's done! It has been a while since I really did a non-contemporary themed set so there were many things to learn on the go and put into practice! If you've seen my previous post here the experiments (and failures) speak for themselves :)
In the end, I wanted to challenge myself to create a variety of different compositions for the set, but without forgoing the character aspect too much, hence the portrait focus for the first 2 pieces, followed by something a little more environment he...

I've finally thought of a decent compromise to posting WIPs! Usually I don't quite like doing that as I feel it spoils the reveal of the set too much - but given my posting "model" and frequency, I do feel like checking in with you guys a bit more at least. That's the least I owe for all the wonderful support.
And so I present - rejected compositions and ideas for this month's set!
Each of these didn't quite work out for various reasons given my final goals for the set, but I stil...

This poster style piece was really quite a challenge to attempt! In the video I reflect on what went wrong (and right!) during the process and some pretty vital learning points.
Spoiler: The sketch stage accuracy can be really deceptively important, even when experimenting and figuring out the big picture feels so urgent.
As always, I hope you find this at least a little helpful, and feel free to let me know any questions to have regarding this piece and I'll get to you ASAP :)...

A very experimental presentation style! I was inspired by some of the really cool illustrations from Gundam Hathaway by Pablo Uchida, and so I wanted to try something along the same veins.
However, it was much, much harder than what I thought going in! Many aspects of the composition required both accuracy and insight while balancing choices in composition, pose and lighting. A thing I definitely still can't quite get down is Irena's pose (character on the left) ...

Following up from the last 2 illustrations, I was pretty inspired to work on the character side of things a bit more! It's definitely a departure from the usual more moody and cinematic tone, but a good way for me to gain a bit more perspective.
Drawing poses are surprisingly hard when you can't hide most of it in shadow! So on that end it was a pretty rigorous practice session as well. The shape of highlights and shadows really play a huge part in defining form as I found out.

I've had a lot of fun reviewing all your submissions for the event! Thank you so much to everyone who participated, it's very motivating to see you guys being so proud of your hard work! It's not easy to offer something so personal to be seen by many people publicly, so I really appreciate the courage, especially for many of the newer artists.

The process video for these pieces are up! It's quite a bit different than the usual cinematic sets - so I hope it will be extra helpful (and interesting) for those who are looking to draw a similar character sheet style of illustration. I've learnt quite a bit when making these so the video is a pretty hefty 42 minutes :)

I had wanted to draw a character reference sheet/ background-less illustration for once - but succumbed once again to the temptation of drawing ever increasing amounts of detail! Still, I'm glad that I left my usual comfort zone for a bit to try something just a tiny bit new :) I had a lot of fun drawing just "Character"s without having to make things cinematic in the usual way.
I want to try a couple more illustrations in this type of style, before going back to to the usual. I h...

I'm finally finished!!
Presenting the illustration set (at full res for Patrons of course) I just finished for the Coloso class! It was quite an experience drawing, teaching and documenting the entire process for the roughly 47 hour(!) class. In a way it forced me to be extra careful and meticulous as I needed to craft a flow that is intuitive and easy to follow, which was quite a learning process in itself. I'm very tired but relieved at this point :)
We will also be having the u...

The final process breakdown is up for the "Morning" set! Finally to the great outdoors :) The final piece, despite its simple composition, brings a whole set of unique challenges to my fundamental skills. Having done a lot of tutorials on perspective, this was a great refresher for myself to understand just how much it can REALLY affect a composition and how it reads. However, after fixing up the basics that had slipped away, I had a great time working on visuals and mood of the scene :)

The third of 4 process breakdowns is up for the "Morning" set! A challenging piece that started at first as a portrait composition, but went through a whole lot of changes and adjustments to reach its final form, comprising a lot more detail and effort than I had planned for when starting it. Perspective was quite a challenge here too, with otherwise subtle cues really heavily directing the structure of the piece.

The second of 4 process breakdowns is up for the "Morning" set! At the very end with everything wrapped up, this is my favorite piece of the set.
