April Devlog 2 (Visionary Redux 0.0.1!)

What happens when an aspiring biologist, a fretful stowaway, a catty ex-boyfriend, and a chipper crewmate board a cruise ship? It turns out it might just sink. Visionary Redux is a sci-fi/romance novel told out of order. It jumps between character perspectives to tell the story of a doomed cruise ship, it's mysterious cargo, and how it's passengers arrived for it's final voyage.

Please keep in mind that Visionary is a very different game from Lost in Saunia. It has a darker tone and a s...

Happy Spring! I don't know if it's the warm weather or the iron supplements, but I've been feeling a lot better lately.

This month I've largely been focusing on writing for the heist sequence. I've also added a corkboard interface and modeled the last few flowers! Now that build 0.0.3 is published, I've been working on miscellaneous bug fixes and quality of life additions. When I used my new script spellcheck tool, I noticed that there's about 40k words in the game so far. That's about ...

March Devlog 1

Hey everyone! I'm helping my boyfriends move this weekend, so here's a slightly early devlog.

March has been going really well! I inked and colored most of the pieces from last month and sketched out a bunch of new character sprites.

The rest of this month will be focused on prepping build 0.0.3, which will be published at the end of the month. Thank you all for your support!

February Devlog 2

Hey everyone. I won't lie, February has been rough. January work cut into an already short month and some personal issues made it harder to get things done. Things are more on track now and I'm getting back into my groove again.

Next month I'll start by finishing the posted sketches, then I'll make progress on writing and coding. The plan is to put out build 0.0.3 at the end of the March!

Also I'm planning to be at Furnal Equinox in Toronto! If any of you want to say hi, sh...

Hey everyone!

February has been pretty straightforward so far. I've just been working on writing for part two and a bunch more visuals. There's a heist arc coming up and I can't wait to show y'all!

The rest of February will be pretty similar with more sprites, splashes, and backgrounds getting finished up. March will be another big writing/coding push, hopefully leading to publishing build 0.0.3 with all of part 2 available!

It's so exciting to see you all playing through th...

January Devlog 2: Build 0.0.2 is here!

Hey everyone! Build 0.0.2 is here! It's attached to this post and available at the mega link below. I hope you enjoy it!

February will be primarily focused on making more visual assets and finishing the writing for part 2. If you find any bugs, let me know and I'll address those too! My plan is to release all the new art assets as they're made, then publish build 0.0.3 in March.

Happy New Year! If you haven't seen it already, the first alpha build of Lost in Saunia is available! You can find it on this patreon post

This month I'm primarily focusing on writing and coding. I've already squashed a few bugs from the first build, and I have a sizable amount of part 2 written and translated into the game. (Those scenes are marked in green in the image above). My goal is to...

December Devlog 2: Build 0.0.1 is here!

It's finally here! The first build of Lost is Saunia is attached below! It's been a long, hard year, but I'm so proud to get a version of this in your hands.

Please keep in mind this is an alpha version. There are lots of placeholder/incomplete assets and a lot of features still to add.

Currently the game is only runnable in windows, but builds will be made for other platforms in the future.

THE INKENING IS UPON US

I've been putting all my energy into getting as many visual assets inked and colored as I can. The first build will still have a lot of temporary and WIP images, but I wanted to give a better idea of what the assets will feel like when fully ready.

The rest of this month will be focused on polishing up other aspects of the game: cleaning up the scenes that will be in the first build, resolving any gamebreaking bugs, and adding as many quality of life featur...

November Devlog 2 (with video!)

November is done and I'm feeling great! My goal this month was to finish making the engine, and that's largely complete! There's still lots of little tweaks and fixes, but the game works pretty well!

I also made some progress on visual assets. I roughed out the logo, created the base 3D map for the sauna, and modeled another fantasy flower, the wickbloom.

Now that I've made it exist, it's time to make it good. December will be focused on cleaning up as much as I can: making better...

November Devlog 1

I won't dwell on it much, but as a queer Jewish American making adult art, these last few weeks haven't been easy. Sometimes self care is a slice of cake and a warm bath. Other times it's dipping into fictional vexillology and recreational coding. As a bit of stress relief, I created some flag designs for the Saunian factions and coded the skeleton of a turn-based combat system. I have no idea if either will actually be included in the game, but they're certainly in my back pocket now.

October Devlog 2

This month has been great!

I've spent most of my time learning to use blender, which has been a lot of fun. Until now I've only used it to block out backgrounds, so modeling organic subjects has been a big change. After all that experimentation I have a much better idea of what I want to do with the visuals.

The first images are a series of map assets I made this month. I've committed to building the map in a 3D low poly style. These flowers will be the signposts/buttons for each ...

October Devlog 1

Phew! I'm finally situated at the new house!

I'm sure you're confused by the collection of images with this post, so let me explain. Patreon pauses in 1 month increments, but I only needed 2 weeks to do all the moving. This meant I had 2 weeks of "free" time to do non-project work. First, I adjusted the Saunia game engine to make a runnable VIsionary one. The engine is 80% done, but there's a lot of writing to do, so no guarantees on when that will be playable. The other thing I did was...

October Patreon Pause

Hey y'all, I'm afraid I'm going to have to pause Patreon for October. Between getting sick and moving house, I'm not satisfied with the amount I finished for September. I'm going to put full focus into moving this week, then use October to catch up on artwork. Thanks for your patience!

September Devlog 1

Happy September! The leaves are starting to turn and the fall energy is fueling me!

It's been quite a month so far. A case of the flu wiped me out for a week, so I've been working my butt off to catch up. Next week I'm moving house, so the crunch isn't stopping for a bit. Even still, I have a bunch of new assets ready for the game!

This post shows off the my version of Crystal's sprite as well a couple of general purpose character splashes. The game will be quite large, so I'm hop...

August Devlog 2

It's almost the end of August, so I thought I'd share some of the pieces I've been working on. It feels a bit silly to color all these temporary sketches, but it helps me feel out the composition and get the character designs locked in before THE GREAT INKENING.

The writing has been coming along great too! There's only one scene left to write for the demo, then it's only a matter of finishing the visual assets. Technically the game is playable now, but there's still a lot of placeholde...

August Devlog 1

Hey all! It's halfway through August so I thought I'd post the sketches and backgrounds I have ready. I've been hard at work on the visuals (there's a couple WIP ones I'm so excited to post in the next few weeks) and I have most of the writing for the demo translated into my godot scripts. I know these are relatively tame, but I promise there are some saucier pieces coming. Lost in Saunia will have plenty of smut, but there's a much larger focus on character building and adventure.

Patreon Resuming in August

Hey everyone! Just wanted to remind you that the Patreon will be resuming in a few days.

Sorry for going silent for a bit, I've been on a trip with no cell connection. (I'm posting this from a tiny shred of wifi in Italy) These past few months have been an excellent break, and now that I'm a bit more sorted out I'm excited to get back in the saddle. Once I'm back at my desk in a few days I'll get started!

April Devlog / May Patreon Pause

Hey everyone! I got some backend development work done in April, but a bunch of things prevented me from fully reaching my goals. To account for this, I'm going to pause the Patreon for May and keep working to meet them. I really appreciate everything you all do to support me, and I always want to come through with great things in return!

I included some pictures and videos of my current WIPs from this month. My main focus has been on getting the map screen working, and it's very close ...

Lost In Saunia

-F&S Sprites: 8 Sprites done this month! Most of the game will take place in Saunia, but the intro scenes and some flashbacks take place in the normal sauna. It was a lot of fun to update the designs and feel out what they're like in my style. Stella, Riley, and Cuddles will make appearances too, they're just not in this first scene.

-Updated comic engine: The game engine for displaying dynamic comic pages now has multiple settings that can handle different imag...

Happy March everyone!

The February break was much needed, and I'm feeling a lot better about hopping back into the gamedev process. I spent a lot of time thinking about what was holding me back (aside from the divorce and depression), and identified that I was being much too strict and rigid with myself. Something to do with the old saying: "Perfection is the enemy of good".

To counteract this, I'm going to be occasionally dipping into a different project, one where I can be...

February Patreon Pause

Hey everyone, unfortunately I'm going to have to pause Patreon for February, as I need a bit of time to step back and work on my mental health. I'm unsure if I'm going to spend that time picking up other projects or just taking a break in general. Thank you all for sticking with me. I'll be back with more Lost in Saunia come March!

Hey y'all, here's a bit more of what I worked on in January. I've been making more progress on backgrounds, character designs, and sprites.  I also updated the map layout with all the different points of interest and character paths, but that is WAY to spoilery to share here.

I also included another video of the engine in action. It's in the attachments below!

I've been spending some time this month starting to work on the interior backgrounds. I tried two methods, one freehanding with light reference, and one using blender to rough out the space before doing a drawover. I'm happy with the results of each so I think I'll use them interchangably going forward!

December Devlog

Happy holidays everyone!

December has been another wild month of travelling to several different households, but I've still managed to make good progress on the game! As promised, this was my first big pass at the game visuals. Rather than focusing on clean linework and finished images, I mainly spent time on sketching, layouts, and posing. These assets are a big help as I continue writing/coding, and I think it's beneficial to see how the different compents work together before finishi...

Hey everyone!

Development is going great! There are two videos at the bottom of this post showing the engine in action. I'm still using a lot of WIP and temporary assets, but I wanted to show you how the game will flow once it's ready. Since my devlog a few weeks ago I've added a bunch of new features:

-Dynamic comic pages with transition effects (this still needs a lot more cleanup)

-Sprite transitions for the visual novel scenes (dissolve, move, fade)

-Dynamicly Loaded Map Screen

-Map Nodes with unlocking/dependency

-Visual Novel Screen (Dialog, Character, etc)

-.json Parsing for Script Files

-Save Files

Lost in Saunia Intro Comic Sketch

Here's the sketch page for the first part of Lost in Saunia. In addition to standard visual novel elements, I want to incorporate this kind of comic page into the game. Some of them will be lightly animated, and I think they'll go far for the more action packed scenes in the game.

This one took a bit longer to make because I was figuring out the updated designs and style as I went, but I anticipate pages should go much faster once I'm more comfortable with them.

Next month will be...
