Progress update

Hi everyone! Here's a progress report on what's coming.

A raw game design podcast episode is in the works. It will cover some things in Codex as well as Fantasy Strike (the fighting game).

All the Codex early access cards have shipped!

There will be a minor update to the Codex rulebooks pretty soon. Most notably it will clarify the new rule for casting Ultimate spells is that your hero must have been at max level at the start of the turn to cast their ultimate spell that tur...

Page about Fantasy Strike

Hey I made this page about Fantasy Strike, the fighting game. It's so if we need to link to something that shows it even exists, we have a handy page.

No screenshots yet, but shows the basic ideas and our goals. Thanks to all who are helping to fund a small portion of it!

Sirlin on Game Design, Podcast Episode 12: Easy Special Moves

http://www.sirlin.net/posts/sirlin-on-game-design-ep-12-easy-special-moves

This episode is about fighting games that want to make special moves easier to do. Whether that's good or bad isn't really the main focus of the episode, it's more about what it means at all.

What is a game with "easy special moves" actually trying to do? Moves being easyâ€...

Hello everyone, Aphotix here! Please help me balance Codex!

Greetings!

I'm Aphotix, and Sirlin has requested that I reach out to his patrons to help make Codex the most balanced and interesting card game that it can possibly be. I will be spending time on this patreon as well as other communication outlets (#Sirlin irc channel, fantasystrike.com forums, sirlin.net forums) to help discuss any balance claims with you folks. Feel free to let me know of any concerns you may have and I'll look into and respond to them as soon as I can. Than...

Raw Game Design, ep11: Fantasy Strike's new button?

Episode 11:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2187212/sound/sirlin_raw_ep11_fantasy_strike.mp3

This is a summary of the design issues over the last few weeks for Fantasy Strike. It's an attempt to solve a problem that no one actually has: that maybe you need more tools to enjoy the game for a long time. Even though though this fighting game has gone over really well...

Sirlin on Game Design, Ep 11: Game Balancing Techniques

http://www.sirlin.net/posts/sirlin-on-game-design-ep-11-game-balancing-techniques

This episode is about the ways I think about balance problems in games. There's lots of examples from Codex and a few from Street Fighter. I cover some of the Codex balance things we discussed at Fantasy Strike Expo 2015. There's also a story from the history of math.

Fighting game progress

Hey everyone, we are making progress on the fighting game. I'm now paying a lot more than the total amount from this patreon JUST for one programmer's work on it, and that doesn't include the cost of character models I'm also paying for, or animation. (Not to mention Codex art!!) So yeah, any support you all give here is GREATLY appreciated and goes right into these projects, currently just to fund a small fraction of them. I'm really excited about this fighting game and about Codex, and it's am...

Fantasy Strike fighting game

Hey everyone, I mentioned an idea for a simple fighting game several months ago, here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/1513632

I'd like to start making that. If we can get more patrons, maybe double of what we have now, I can actually start development of that. It of course costs massively more than that to make a game, but if I can just get a bit of help I think it's doable to get it started. In any ca...

Quick update: Yomi Valerie and Gloria physical decks are now available. Yomi on Steam coming in a week or so (you guys helped a lot in finding bugs so it was a lot to fix!). Fantasy Strike Expo standard registration ends tomorrow. I've been working so so hard on having all the playtest materials ready for that event. We'll have materials for Pandante 2nd Edition and Flash Duel's revised printing there, even though those products aren't actually out yet. And a huge revision of Codex will be there...

Here's my update for everyone. The Pandante & Flash Duel kickstarter is now complete. I've also done most of what's needed for setting up manufacturing. Unfortunately I'm sick with a cold right now. I can't get podcast recording going when my voice is so shot, but I'll get back to it as soon as I can. I'm not actually sure what topic we should discuss next. I planned to have Codex materials ready soon, and I still do, but I'm making another major change to the gameplay system (thankfully, ...

Sirlin on Game Design, Podcast Episode 10: Flash Duel

This episode is about the development of Flash Duel. A few system changes really fixed the game up nicely, so you can hear what went into that. There's also an anecdote about the trickiest thing to balance. Then garcia1000 and I discuss how to prepare for tournaments. Thanks to all you patrons for your support!

Fantasy Strike Expo 2015

Please come to Fantasy Strike Expo this June in San Francisco. And sign up now. Play all my games, including Codex and Flowchart, and generally have a great time.

Hi everyone. I haven't had much time for anything other than the Pandante kickstarter. It's still not funded, so if you can get some friends to back it, that would be a great help. I have a bunch of stuff in the works for you all though. We have a podcast on Flash Duel coming up. We're about to launch the signup page for Fantasy Strike Expo too, it will be this June in San Francisco. For $25+ backers, I'll have playtest materials for the starter cards in Codex available in a couple weeks or so....

Sirlin on Game Design, Podcast Episode 8: Morality in Stories

We discuss the drama created by stories that pose moral questions. Stories set outside the law make us think even more about these questions, so that could explain why so many popular stories have settings that take us outside of our familiar system of laws. We tie this into games with examples from The Walking Dead game and A Tale in the Desert. This episode is less about games than others, but I find the design of lots of things interesting. I hope you guys enjoy it too. Thanks for your suppo...

FSX3 is coming in June 2015!

So it looks like we'll have Fantasy Strike Expo this June again, in San Francisco. The last two went really well and were extremely fun. It's a mix of a tournaments, casual play of unreleased / beta stuff (or released stuff too), and just hanging out. I hope you can make it! We don't have many details yet about this year's event, but here is a post from QMinka, who is one of the main organizers: View Post

Sirlin on Game Design, Podcast Episode 7: Sequels

We talk about sequels to movies and games in this episode. There's several kinds of sequels, so we go over the different purposes of various sequels first. In the end, we get sequels of highly replayable games, such as Street Fighter or Puzzle Strike. It's taken a while to make a new episode because of me getting sick twice and then Aphotix being sick too. What a hassle. Thanks for your support everyone!

Raw Game Design podcast, Episode 6: Fantasy Strike Simple Fighting Game

We discuss the possibility of making a minimal fighting game. The design idea to create a game that's simpler than regular fighting games, but more complex than Divekick. I have access to music and 3D models to make it, though I'd still need programmers and at least one 3D graphics expert to join up, or the money to straight up hire those folks. This podcast is mostly about exploring the design concept and whether people would like it.

Sirlin on Game Design, Podcast Episode 6: Character Bans

We talk about games where players ban each other's characters. Also you might enjoy the guest segment. Thank you for supporting the podcast, patrons! It takes a fair amount of time to prepare, record, and edit these. You have all been very encouraging about it. :)

I was sick last week, recovered, then got sick *again* this week. I'm struggling to get better again, I think I'm on the way. More podcasts and updates to print-and-play materials as soon as I can. I have another podcast recorded, but it still takes a few hours to edit. And you higher tier patrons who have helped with the new Pandante materials have been great. We're getting close to finishing.

Happy holidays everyone! Unfortunately I've been sick, but I'm getting better now. Between that and the holidays, I haven't had any updates for several days and it will probably delay the next podcasts a bit. I have to be able to *speak* in the podcasts, lol. In my weakened state, I was at least able to play a few games instead of work all day though, ha. Mario Kart, Smash, Pikmin 3, and Guilty Gear Xrd. Great! I hope you're all having a relaxing time too.
