It's been a bit since the last Codex and I decided to look at some people you might meet on the road while lost in the wilderness. I've always liked the idea of exploring and seeing new sights, of moving through ancient jungles and blazing trails. Of course, the idea of exploration is way more appealing to me than actually doing it. This Codex features NPCs who are great at surviving harsh environments, hunt wild game, and are defenders of nature and the natural world.

Whether they are how you accessorize your outfit, or they are a piece of a set of armor, gloves and gauntlets can be imbued with magical power you may find helpful throughout your campaign. When I think about these items, my mind immediately goes to a rogue slipping on a pair of black leather gloves before pulling a job or plate mail gauntlets that extend up to the wearer's elbow. They are no means limited to that, as you have to look no further than Full Metal Alchemist and the flame-produci...

I (Stephen) am going to be running a one-shot on June 25th but first I need a few players - which is where you come in. This will be a first-come, first-serve though our $10 patrons get first dibs. After that, I'll be opening it up to our $5 patrons (15th), a few days later to our $1 patrons (18th), and then it will be open to anyone on our Discord (20th). I have room for 6 players in the one-shot. If you are in one of the lower tiers, feel free to message me beforehand and I'll add you t...

The first incarnation of the Warlock appears merely as a level in the wizard class in the original Dungeons & Dragons and then as a lowly non-player character in Dragon #114 (October 1986) as a witch. The witch can be found as far back as Dragon #5 (March 1977) and we are told that they are strictly female. In the usual sexist 1970’s fashion, we are told...

Getting another one in under the wire. I may have forgotten about the time change now that I have gone on my first trip in two years.
Taurok was my character in our last campaign, and he is one of my all time favorites. While my fellow party member may say I have embellished his role in the triumph, I stand by my words. Besides, Taurok is the only one that got a statue in his honor.

The Slaadi were created by Charles Stross, who seems to have a thing for horrific frogs. Giant, horrible frogs. Charles Stross is a British writer who wrote several articles for the now-defunct White Dwarf magazine and several of his creatures have made their appearance in the very first Fiend Folio released in 1981. These massive monsters stride across the world, probably causing a lot of accidental property damage, and are ferocious unstoppable killing machines. These creatures are larger than gargantuan, with the largest among them stretching over 450 feet high! The tarrasque can only claim 70 feet high, and while these creatures aren't the devouring of worlds that a tarrasque is, they are incredibly powerful who thrive on destruction. They are rarely ever found together, as they simply require too man...

In reading through the old texts, whether it be for a Deep Dive, a Rewind post, or for Magic Item Monday research, I'm always coming across some of the most insane magic items you wouldn't believe. So this week is a tribute to just a tiny handful of them, which have been converted to the 5th edition to make them useful. Of course, they are still ridiculous in one way or another, so if and how you use them is entirely up to you. Below is each of the original items, so you, my dear reader, can ...

Talismans are a funny group of wondrous items since they are sort of a catchall for pins, amulets, brooches, stones, and many others. Definition of a talisman is an object that is thought to have magic powers and to bring good luck, so if you aren't sure what to call that strange new item the party found, just label it a talisman.
Bloodstone Talisman - One more in a long line of objects in D&D that wants a piece of someone's soul.

Back with a Greek classic monster, the Harpy is a horrific creature half-vulture and half-humanoid with a dark craving for flesh. They seem to be suffering from a case of mistaken identity, sharing the same attributes that the sirens from Greek classics have. They use their beautiful songs to lure in travelers, sailors, merchants, and more into dangerous situations before launching a vicious attack, ripping their victims to shreds.
These grotesque creatures may have once been formed by ...
