Escorts

No, not those kind of escort. That will come later.

Finished incorporating the path finding AI with the combat AI. So now it's possible to have "escorts" that will follow you and attack nearby enemies. Implemented a couple more AI commands as well, such as attack ground, move to position, and follow.

Path Finding (Part2)

Made a lot of progress on path finding. It works pretty well on open field, but does get congested a bit with big groups in narrow chokes. Here is a gif demo:

Path finding

A few people have observed that the enemies sometimes "attack you through door" or even "ambushes" you by doing things like "hiding near the walls."

The reason for those behavior is that the AI only knew how to move in a straight line towards the player. This works pretty well for large open terrains, but in something more confined, such as a maze, the AI will frequently get stuck.

A new enemy type - Zs!

Decided to postpone work on demo 3 a bit to fix some issues with combat in demo 2. (Demo 3 will be focusing on non-combat related stuff)

Here is a new enemy type for the game - Zs. They are meant to be fast, fragile, and fearless swarmers. And they'll likely require some different tactics to deal with compare to the Axe Mobs.

Outfit change demo

Inventory, and looting from containers and ... sleeping enemies are working now. The equipment screen, together with the color chooser located there, will come at a later time.

Finished the random dungeon (schematic) generator. Going to work on actually constructing it next.

What the colors mean:

  • Black: walls
  • Gray: doorways
  • Pale yellow: starting room
  • Pink: boss room
  • Red: enemies

Heroine Rumble - wishlist

As many are aware, HR is "done" and I am working on a new game. However, I will continue to support HR in the near future in terms of bug fixes and tweaks.

What to expect in Demo#1

Demo #1 is almost ready. However, because it is a very bare bone demo I feel it would be best to talk about what to expect and give some instructions on how to play.

The controls are as follows:

WASD - move

Mouse - look around

Mouse_Left - Attack

Steppes

Redone the ground textures and added grasses, so now its a steppe of sorts. This is likely all I am going to do for terrain on demo #1. (Demo #1 coming very soon!)

The grasses are important because I need to test the LOS (level of detail) system that only draws high detailed objects, like grasses due to their numbers, when viewed close. And, of course, allowing for performance tweaks in the future for those with potato PCs.

Shadows

Spend most of today getting shadows to work and got it working in an acceptable fashion for demo#1.

What is the issue you ask? Well, the first observation is that the view distance in a third person view game is far larger compared to an indoor setting like Heroine Rumble was. The second is the player moves and looks around, and there is potentially a much large area that the shadow need to cover. Some new Combat Mechanics

One flaw in the combat system that I want to address is the difficulty in fighting many opponents at once. While arguably that it is realistic and it should be difficult, it doesn't make for a fun game play experience. It is certainly do-able by walking backwards and keep swinging - effectively turning a 1 v many into many 1 v 1s, but I want to make it also possible for the player to hold his/her ground. (I am also not going to penalize the backward strategy at the moment)

Outfits and the Plan Ahead

Been working on solving various animation problems arising from independent torso and leg movement. Should be able to wrap it up this week together with the first iteration of combat. The combat mechanics are almost finished now. There are still quite a few bugs and animation problems that need to be sorted out, but enough core systems are functional now to create an overview of how it works.

Combat System

Added Inverse Kinematics to engine and implemented enough functionality for independent upper body and lower body movement. 

Kind of tired of talking about tech so lets do something different this time.

As mentioned before, the next game will feature weaponry and directional attacks and guards. Eg, 4 attack directions - up/down/left/right and 4 block directions. A block is only successful if the block is in the same direction as the attack.
