The Atelier Tier, so far, has been an exciting vehicle to move your education forward in a more structured way. So, let's talk about the future and what's in store:
1. Schedule Moving Forward
Just like an in person atelier we will have breaks so I can build up all of the lesson notes, demo footage, and background work it takes to put out each lesson. For me, 3 months in a row is probably too many and I can't keep up that pace. What it will look li...

UPDATE: This part of Studying With Sargent is now available to Entry Level subscribers as well.
Part 1 will cover the preparatory drawing for this master study. Bear in mind that though Sargent might not have necessarily made drawings this way. Our goal however, is to make sure that when the time comes to study the color and value that our drawing will not hold us back.
Part 2 of this lesson will be the first pass in oil paint. Release date TBD.
Part 3 will be the finish. Re...

I have been reading all of the feedback from the Atelier Tier survey and it has been SO helpful! Thank you for taking the time to help me improve. I have taken into special consideration the responses that came up again and again. Here are the bullet points that I am going to address:
1. I promise that I will stop apologising for my itchy nose and/or any other hiccup in production. We're all friends here so no need to be self conscious.
2. Your time is super...

UPDATE: this is now the edited version
This posting is close to the date of the stream. I had to balance the competing priorities of getting this out as far before the due date (18th of July) and giving you advanced notice of the stream.
The subject in the main will be the development of values & half tone characteristics.
See you there!

Hello and welcome to the Summer (for those of you in the northern hemisphere).
1. Coming up on July 13th I will be releasing Part 1 of my new Studying With Sargent series. It will cover the pencil block in for my study of Lady Agnew of Lochnaw.
2. Next month (August) I will be releasing a drawing lesson from a guest instructor- Patrick Byrnes. I have been working on this for a super long time and finally have a moment where I can show it to the world. <...

This is a quick refresher on my paper stretching method.
With everyone's time in mind I have shortened it down to the bare essentials.
Materials:
1. Stonehenge paper, made by a company called Legion. The version that I use is 120 lb. Try this link if you are in the USA. And this 2021-07-07 13:10:44 +0000 UTC

This is really a video of me working for a couple of hours on filling values and working really hard on pushing the drawing forward. There is no commentary.
Side note: I have already released part 4 so this is going back in time a little bit.
Enjoy!

UPDATE: I have added another 7-8 minutes of footage to this video. It shows me pushing the values in the drawing further.
I have really agonised on how to release this next bit of footage. There is a middle section of this Bargue that just needs tons of work (as I am sure you are all realising). I am very aware of making these lessons too content heavy, meaning that you shouldn't need 15+ hours to get through the videos.
This time lapse is a collection of si...

I decided to do part 2 without going live. This part of the lesson is about laying in the initial values and starting down the path towards resolution.
Make no mistake! This doesn't mean that we are done making changes, improvements or using straight lines. Only now the errors we are fixing are a little bit more subtle.

The deadline to turn in your Belvedere Torso drawings is JUNE 19th. I said the wrong date about ten times during the block in lesson and this is actually the official date.
I am going to be recording another session of me demoing and teaching about this Bargue very soon and will make that available to all of you ASAP. The next live event associated with this lesson will be the live group critique on...

- There is a channel for community critiques.
- And one for hi-res images of great artworks
- Another for materials question and sources.
- And even more after that.
So, it's another platform but is it f...

Hello Everyone, I made these infographics to give a very brief and basic idea of how to photograph your drawings.
My purpose here is not to explain everything about this endeavour, there are entire books on it I am sure, but just to give an actionable field guide. So, whether you are shooting with your phone or a $50,000 Hasselblad DSLR, the advice here will help make your photos better.
The camera I use is a Panasonic Lumix GH5 with a 14-140mm lens. While there are other le...

We have all been there- none of the work you make seems good enough. It's scary to start a drawing with that blank white infinity staring back at you. Etc... Perfectionism comes in many forms and now we're gonna talk about it. Share your thoughts in the live comments and I will share them as they come in.
