Good evening Patrons!
Some of you may have seen a video circulating on YouTube of a Japanese man named Kazu nitpicking my Japanese. I've actually been in contact with Kazu-san since he created these videos; he's a very pleasant and knowledgeable guy, and the current voice of the native male recordings in Japanese Phonetics.
I just wanted to let everyone know that Kazu-san and I had a conversation on Skype not too long ago where we discussed a variety of language-related topics, in ...

Note: I had intended on including native recordings for the voiced version of 'h' in 'haha' and 'gohan', but after listening to these files on repeat, I came to the conclusion that isolated recordings of these pronunciations could end up confusing learners more than it helped, and thus opted to leave them out. My recordings for these words may not be 100% native, but because the voicing of 'h' is something most native English speakers are used to (as mentioned in the less...

Note: At around 10:10 in this video, I note that the standard Japanese z sound(the initial sound in ざ、ず、ぜ、ぞ)sometimes does become a fricative in the word initial position if it comes after a word ending in a vowel and the speaker is talking at a fairly rapid pace. I just wanted to let everyone know that this is true for the initial sound in じ as well. I opted to not mention this as I've found that a fair number of Japanese learners naturally &nbs...

The girls were actually born a few weeks back, but things have finally settled down a bit, so I'm just now getting around to announcements. I want to personally thank each and every one of you that has contributed to Japanese Phonetics, or signed up in one of the lower price tiers

June 4, 2021 Update: In the previous version of this lesson, I talked about how the initial い in 行くか often gets partially dropped in rapid speech, and attributed this to devoicing. However, after doing additional research, I've come to the conclusion that this is more of a form of slurring / slang than devoicing, and thus removed this section from the lesson. To clarify, I no longer believe that devoicing occurs at the beginning of words, though word initial い certa...

Sunday, January 23, 2022 update: A previous version of this video contained a mistake in the pitch-accent graphic for 先生は女だ at 12:35, but this has been fixed, along with a few other minor cosmetic changes.
One additional note on pitch-accent graphics: In this series, particles and conjugations of the verb です are typically indicated with an open circle instead of a solid dot, but in this lesson, ‘でした’ in the verb ‘食べませんで...
