I originally wrote the strips to be very deadpan. I thought of it like "If children book characters where written by Harvey Pekar." Later I started writing it like "What if cartoon characters had to work in an office". I think that fit the art better and I wish I'd done it earlier.

Some of the most fun I've had working with Melissa was on a list of restaurant pun names for restaurants that served humans as food for the strip. Sadly, when our editor passed away, we had to down play that sub-plot. Our new editor was not a fan.

During the launch party for the strip Melissa and I got tickets for Universal Studios Amusement Park. I convinced her to go on the Hulk roller-coaster to bond. Afterwards she got a nose bleed. I was worried I'd killed her.

At first the Superman pun was supposed to be 'Supermutt' but the syndicate thought no one would get what we were spoofing. Later I would make the pun Superdoberman. Of course it was all based on DC Comics' character Super Squirrel, which I always thought sounded more like Supergirl.

The strip's editor brought Melissa to my attention by showing me an elaborate, epic, battle scene she'd drawn for her Manga book 'Sokora Refugees' and asked if I thought she'd be a good artist for 'My Cage'. I told him yes, but that it was like showing me a Norman Rockwell painting and asking if he'd be good at drawing Beetle Bailey.

Melissa is 9 years younger than me and looks years younger than she actually is. When we first met she was in her mid-20's. I thought our syndicate had hired a high schooler to be the strip's artist.
