Interview about cybergrind (5/7/24)

Another interview from earlier this year, mixed with reflections by the author on cybergrind - a genre I used to create - and have a lot of friends in the cybergrind community.

https://enicomonacelli.substack.com/p/cybergrind

----

As for the old anarcho-cybergrind project I reference, here it is. It's a two-piece band called "Self-Corruption" and the record is called "History of Clown...

Interview (9/19/24) with HypIrestition Ruins

Hey, going to try and post interviews and so on here for the sake of completeness/having a single spot to find things regarding me. Here is an interview I did recently! It talks about everything from compositional methodology, psychogeography, neurodivergence and collaboration as a form of love. You can read it on the below!

Uboa - Tiredness Shrine (EP) (Ambient/Drone)

Hey!

Sorry about doing nothing for a while as I had a lot of health issues. I've been currently staying at my parents house resting awaiting results to a lot of tests (I suspect MCAS or autoimmune/allergy). Two nights ago I couldn't sleep, and brought my Digitone in bed and just jammed to make me sleepy, as insomnia is one of the symptoms i've been fighting. These were done ...

Uboa - Literal Hell

Here is a stream of a song I did for a charity compilation "Noise for Artsakh", a fundraiser organised by Armenian industrial musician Blood of a Pomegranate (Tig Harutyunyan), one of collaborators and my mixing engineer for Impossible Light. It's a (mostly) cut-up noise song, not dissimilar to "Salivate on Cue", "Please Don't Leave Me" or "Weaponised Dysphoria" - by far the most fun style...

Noise School: Ableton Live Sets + Uboa - 2023 - 8 - 23 (Empathy Shield outtake 2)

Here's the other outtake I found buried in an Albeton folder. It's longer than the original Empathy Shield and probably my favourite outtake. I'll make this a noise school too and describe some aspects of how I set up live sets and record from them.

All these outtakes are in the "Set" are recorded directly from ableton by recording from the master bus output (basically, making a new track adn setting its "in" to "Main". "out" can also be "main" - it won't loop infinitely and break anyt...

Uboa - 2023 - 10 - 15 (Empathy Shield Outtake 1)

Ambient practice session from late last year, roughly around the time of empathy shield, so it uses some of the same patches and samples. Found buried in an ableton session. Thought it was coherent enough to put up as a noise diary. Has some drums in it too.

Found several of these. Likely could stitch them together into a Big Thing. Second Outake (which is much longer) is next.

Noise school: creating a sense of space with field recordings

Here is an elaborate response to this comment (re: Impossible Light) by raeaw: "it's almost like there's a movie playing in your head or something, i think because all the samples contextualize it since they're concrete sounds?".

It also reminds me of some other comments I've had about my work: "it sounds like she's in the room with you" or "its like ASMR" etc - I suspect its why some people can get very scared of some the songs.

Basically, yes, samples con...

Some samples from "A Puzzle"

Here are some of the original sounds from A Puzzle - at least the ones I made and have on my HDD currently.

Several are made traditionally using a wet towel, a bucket and a field recorder. I'd like to thank Violet and Kiera for helping me do this.

Theres some other foley here as well as noise and vocal effects.

Feel free to use them for your own things. Let me know if you do so I can hear them. Like my other samples here, I'll not ask for royalties, just credit...

Suprise! My LP is out.

Hi everybody! my new LP "impossible light" is now out digitally on The Flenser. You can also pre-order the vinyl, tapes and shirts. Also, sorry for keeping it secret from you guys, but my label was worried about a leak (they were right, as soon as it was available in the AEST time zone, it was up on soulseek. I have no choice but to respect that.) Here is a repost of what I said on Tumblr.

Uboa - Apollyon

A noise diary jam done yesterday before a show at my partners house. This liminal sunset was outside the window when recording it. A slow thing, tired, etheral and kinda terrifying thing that takes its time. improvised without any editing minus basic mastering.

Apollyon is the greek name for Abaddon, the place of destruction and an 'angel of the abyss'. If you are a fan of SCP (of which ...

Roadburn is over!

(pic by violet)

Thanks for anybody who came to see me play 3.5 sets while I was burnt out with a cold! I still and sifting through all the pictures and videos of the sets, and am still quite exhausted. As soon as roadburn was over, violet and I crashed. Have not been able to have a holiday as I only recently regained enough strength to walk to the shops lol.

Uboa - Calm Down excerpt

Hey, sorry about the lack of stuff recently as I've obviously been busy w/ prepping for roadburn (which is terrifyingly close aaaa). I was commissioned to write two sets, EP/mini-LP length, called "Meltdown" and "Calm Down". (I'll probably rename both meltdown/calm down something more final later, the meltdown/shutdown/calmdown thing is mostly as a way to advertise all three sets in a united sense.)

So heres a snippet of how Calm Down is going so far. I can't show you the full thing e...

How to play An Angel on guitar (hint its super simple)

Pasted from bluesky for those who don't follow me there.

Tempo: 120 (or 60, one kick every second) 4/4

for roadburn, I'll be playing it all electric as I cbf swapping from an acoustic to a guitar, might have the acoustic as a sample in the background however.

Bass is just the low notes (B, G, E) on a synth with saws on the high end and subs on the low end as the bass guitar...

Uboa - Live @ Night Heron (TOomD prototype / on composing with jams)

So, here's the live set that eventually became edited into into The Origin of My Depression, specifically the title track, lay down and rot as well as cut-up over the other songs (such as An Angel, Please Don't Leave Me). Circa 2018-2019, I believe with Micheal Ellingford (Deafault), a big influence on my sound.

Preparing last-minute-ish for the roadbun set meant I had to find all the sound sources on the record, and it isn't easy as it was never intended to be played live, and indeed ...

Uboa - Live at Old Bar 2018

Another HDD find. 25 mins long. Yes, its the field recording of my set that may of been edited into the latter half of The Sky May Be, or a similar set to it using many of the same samples (like the ukelele turned into a koto). Didn't even record from the desk as I just didn't for some reason?

It's me playing some "festival for women"? I can't really remember the details of the show at all.  glad I was included though as the set is alright as far as 2018 goes. Probably one of my ...

Uboa - It's Always Night Somewhere

Old kinda peaceful ambient song, using guitars, glockenspiel, old boyish vocals and other 'real' instruments. Written around the same time as Drowning on Dry Land (2016, nearly 8 years ago lol) )as a soundcloud-exclusive (pretentiously called 'filaments'). Doesn't really have a structure, is a big kinda blur.

Been going through old HDD while recovering and digging up old samples for the Origin set a roadburn. Probably will recommence noise school in May.

Uboa - Landfill Parade

As I said, I'm burnt out working on things. So for the sake of Content and archival I give you this. Found this on an old HDD. Some pure cut up harsh noise from 2018. Have fun.

I’m burnt out

Above reposted from IG.

Sadly this means I won’t be able to do patreon for a bit. This is a big problem for me as it’s my main source of income (more than bandcamp, Spotify or merch) - it’s literally how I pay my rent. However I suspect I tried to bite off more than I can chew. I thought I could take on a neurotypical workload, but after today, I don’t think I can.

I’m kinda putting my foot down now, as my number one priority is playing roadburn - ironically themed about...

Uboa - Empathy Fatigue

I recorded a lot of demo versions of the live sets for Perth last year, one of which (for radio) would become Empathy Shield. I often like to record jams to remember/catch improvised ideas in the moment, to analyse my mixing and playing and finally so I can post them here.

I just found this buried in the ableton live session for the set I played in Perth ('empathy shield live'). It's a bit shorter and much more 'chill' and ambient, which in some ways I kinda prefer to the hodge-podge ...

Uboa - The Apocalypse of True Love

Here is the final song of the upcoming split. Like the previous two, the mixing is still in the air as I await feedback for it. It's a long one, and a pretty emotional one at that. It details the end of the story where Evelyn - fully realising her powers - comes back to save April from the base she is being interrogated at. Evelyn likely brings about the end of the world with her powers, so the title is literal. It's both quite dark but quite hopeful.

It's a more musical and 'accessibl...

Uboa - "Petplay Polycule Open Fire" + "Wasted Potential"

I think my first two songs (of six) on my upcoming split are recorded and mixed (but unmastered). If this isn't the final version, it's close. It's very much a foray back into the world of sludge metal (like my 2014 EP, Coma Wall, and the stuff before) but also very much industrial and with elements of death industrial. It's pretty heavy.

(CW: torture, ED, sex, police violence, some slurs, general horrifying shit)

The two songs are currently in one ...

Uboa - Pareidolia Shadow (WIP)

Here's a near-finished song from my upcoming split with a certain internationally renowned  doom metal band who also hail from Naarm (Melbourne). The instrumentals and mixing are *almost* there and have a strong doom metal influence so it fits with the other band on the split. My side of the split will be 23 minutes long, divided into about 5-6 songs. A much earlier version of the song was put up on soundcloud as 'The Eyes of Yesterday' roughly a year ago.

The instrumentation incl...

(Noise Diary) Uboa - Seismic Blasting

I said I'd not do any more posts this year but heres a belated christmas miracle (or misfortune) for y'all - another noise diary track. Quickly recorded while practicing/testing my live setup. It's pretty similar to Diaphragmatic Breathing - it's harsh noise. It's basically improvisation over mic feedback, which is the main resonant frequency (I'll probably limit it a bit if I ever release this). Merry christmas. A...

Live setup 2023

I had a few people inquire about the gear I use live.

Essentially all of the above goes through Ableton in the "Session" view through the audio interface. Generally my mixing living needs to be very clear and is part of the songwriting (like a lot of other noise artists, just more high-tech) so I can't rely on the sound engineer to know what to do. Usually they don't. Everything comes out of a stereo L/R out into the PA. I also don't just use live equipment, I always load samples and ...

WIP (?) EP - Heart Meat

Sorry it's been a while. Xmas period is a clusterfuck as I am currently finishing a split for Naarm (non-colonial name for Melbourne, Australia) doom metal band Whitehorse (secret between y'all here and me)! At the same time as planning Roadburn and the LP release cycle for the next record. I'll be posting some WIPs of the split as I am super excited in how it's coming along (unfortunantly, my label don't want any of the new LP leaked, so I must be tight-lipped).

In the interim I found...

Uboa - Empathy Shield

As some of you are aware, I re-remastered (lol)  The Origin (Deaf) and renamed it Empathy Shield

I renamed it mostly because the elements of The Origin title track only appear in the final track/section, the rest is new minus sampling. If you are wondering what an empathy shield is, click View Post

Untitled - Scoring Practice

Probably would surprise none of you to know I would love to score a film or video game one day. Here is me practicing this quickly, making something kind of sci-fi-ish. No vocals as its meant to be a score, at least for the time being. I have a habit of using songs for different purposes later on.

Strictly uses samples and VSTs, virtually all Ableton Live Suite default instruments and packs, with only a moderate amount of adjustment. I have less of a problem doing this now than I used t...

Uboa - Fawn (Demo)

Here's a demo track of a song (an *actual* song!) that suddenly came to me when 'practicing'  my live set. Basically, its mostly synth (a Korg Minilogue) and vocals, with some subtle sampling and noise added. It's very sparse, but I don't really know how to fill the space in the song (or if they even *should* be filled). It's all built on a melody I sequenced into the arpeggiator of the synth while trying to make some patches for my life show and it took on a life of its own. It sounds a...

Uboa - My Garden (Hidden Shard of Glass)

Another entry I am putting under 'noise diary'. Another death industrial-ish song. Starts off ambient and ends up almost harsh noise wall towards the end. Features vocals (without lyrics) which are mostly ambient or buried. The best part is towards the end, when everything sounds kinda fucked.

This song was originally meant for a compilation, but the guy running the comp forgot to remind me to send him to track before release. I was going to use for *another* compilation but the track ...

Uboa - Love Heart Pink Choker

Song made from various scraps on my HDD from recording my practices. Tried to challenge myself and 'speed-compose' song in 1-2 days, release it here and never think about again. I'll probably do more of these, as its great sound design practice and a good habit to do often so I don't get lazy and feel 'productive'.

Consider it a 'noise diary' - making quick songs around diary entries. It's an idea I've had for a while and I am trialing it here before committing to it. I think it might ...
