I wanted to try out doing some pencil sketch types of images.  There's a digital pencil bundle for Manga Studio made by an artist named Frenden that really stunned me.  So much so that I bought out the mega-pack of brushes he offers.

I got into a mindset of trying for perfect edges on every image I did digitally that I wanted to break.  Some of the charm of art is that there are rough edges, and mistakes that aren't completely covered up by going back over the image with a fine ...

Pledges were a bit slow to process this time around, but I usually plan for it to take around a work-week to finish.

There's not much new on the projects front.  I'll begin uploading pictures again this month at some point on the weekend.  I'll also be doing the draw for a sketch on Sunday.

Another week already!

This time around I'm going to do a bit of an FAQ about the upcoming comic.  Some are questions posed by folks from various sources, others are just things I'd like to answer/clear up.

What is this comic going to be called?

As of right now I don't have anything but a working title for the series.  I'm calling it 'Driftwater Shore' until I'm ready to pin down a better title.  I'm unsure if I want to use a common-langua...

Weekly Update - Number 3

Another week has flown by already! This will be another short update, as plans are still in the same general place they were last week. I've started to acclimate to the new tablet. It took a bit of getting used to, but I'll have the fixed colour updates uploaded soon. I was so used to adding a post-fixup-routine to all the art I did on the Cintiq to fix the fact that Cintiq's have a film on them that adds a false contrast to images created on them. They then look too faded or muddy on most ...

Just realized that the last image I posted was a bit too dark. I'm used to a different tablet to render these with, and the result was a touch darker than I wanted when saved to a .jpg I'll fix it for the 150dpi download though, and likely edit/fix the 72dpi version as well, sorry about that!

Crab Hunter Colour Preview

The great crab-hunting otter showing of his catch to his father. This started out as a simple style sheet being done for the various parts of Qiuloa, and what different architecture and clothing might look like from various parts of the island. In Laon Zhan, they have heavy eastern influences due to trade with the continents off the eastern shore. Everything from silks to buildings have that sort of style to them.

Crabs Hunting

I nearly forgot to share this. Another of april's pictures that's currently being coloured. I guess Laontra are never too young to start hunting crab. Though he seems to want to keep it as a pet.

The colour version of Krinjaala that will be available as a high res image for this month's cycle. I had someone ask what program I was used to colour these, and it's entirely done in Manga Studio these days, with a few post-image things done in another program. I use a lot of Frenden brushes in the actual work though. -T.J.

Kaleha - Concept sheet 1

Some of the concept sketches that I've been doing for the yet-to-be-titled comic. The biggest shift I've had is re-learning how to do expressive faces, and doing expressive faces on different creatures. This is Kaleha. A Laontran (otter folk) purveyor of flowers in lovely arrangements, and jewelry of shell, bead, and bone. The Dead Halls - 150dpi

150dpi image of Lyssiah in the Dead Halls of Auchenovar. Someone asked about the weird green light in the tower behind her. The tower is called a 'ghost tower' and serves as a marker to anyone venturing deeper into the lower city that beyond that point they are on their own, and it's a known area for husk (undead) activity.

What started as a sketch turned into a whole 'thing'. I'm dialing back a bit on the 'fine tuning' stage for some of the slice of life pictures, as that process can take literally a whole day of work to get through.
