Battle Royale: Paulo vs. Jon

Welcome to the Thunderdome!
I thought it might be a lot of fun to have you help decide what our next film might be after we finish up the sponsorship list (soon)! (You can still sponsor a specific film of your own choice, and any casting choices that are feasible, by sending an email to filmreroll@gmail.com) But, I realized that I love listening to my crew banter about possibilities, so you might too! For tonight's fight, ...

An update!

Hi everybody!

What a week, huh? None of us can deny that there are many changes happening all at once right now, and stability seems hard to find. I know so many of you have expressed love and thanks for the invite to join us at our screwball table over the years—especially in hard times. And depending on your background, these might feel like pretty hard times.

That's why I wanted to reach out and say, we're here for you. We're not going anywhere. I know the last two month...

Last Unicorn Part 3

I love a very serious episode with very goofy energy. To me that's kind of what the show is all about. We were definitely in a wacky mood for this one. To be honest, Last Unicorn is turning into a favorite of mine. It's a pretty straightforward adventure, but we've found some odd quirks in it, such as the weirdly selected cast (other than Jon, my players are really not min-maxers) or the oddly heartfelt tone borrowed from the actual movie. There's something wonderful in getting to create a hi...

Beetlejuice part 3

Well, I wasn’t expecting this. I had ideas, but really no clear direction with where we were going and if it would even include one infamous, juicy beetle. So I did what I was taught to do by an incredibly accomplished writer/director friend: when you don’t have the direction, put the question into the room and let your fellow artists show you. Repeat and repeat and repeat, just shaping as you go.

Now, there are definitely times when you want to throw in a hard line to tell the sto...

Beetlejuice Part 2

This is such a silly film, and it feels like it’s directly commenting on so much while also simultaneously making fun of itself. I often find myself marveling at the actor’s ability to portray avant garde character traits in a completely believable filmic way—this is no easy task my friends. Often, when you audition for network procedurals (Chicago Fire, Law and Order SVU, etc.), you’ll get the most heightened scene (or an equivalent) with deep fear, joy, or despair because they wanna...

Beetlejuice part 1

Beetlejuice is a strange film about a strange dude. In some ways, I get it—if you have abilities, but not the right mentors or opportunities to use and develop them, that’s a lot of energy just sitting around, and it can get destructive. It can harm others and yourself in many ways.

What I love about this odd film is its gently understanding depiction of those tender years when teens who don’t fit in—who don’t have outlets for energy and abilities—are at risk of dying by su...

Last Unicorn Part 2

I love building a big magical world. This one in a funny way reminded me of the prep for Wizard of Oz. And thinking back that far made me reflect on how my approach has changed over the years. In a lot of ways my prep has gotten much more efficient. Back then I didn't really know how the show worked and I just kind of designed a world for them to play in without much sense of how it could play out. I put too much detail into spaces they were unlikely to visit simply because I was having a fun...

Last Unicorn

I've always found one of the most interesting possibilities on this show is to completely subvert the inciting incident of the movie: What happens to the movie if the movie doesn't really happen at all? What if Kevin McCallister doesn't get left behind? What if Dorothy escapes the tornado? There is sort of a philosophical disagreement among the GM's in this show as to whether or not to protect the inciting incident from circumvention. I generally fall into the camp of whatever happens, happens...

Tremors Part 5

Tremors concludes! https://www.filmreroll.com/?p=628

I love it when an epic ending comes together. I mean, I do love lampshading a very anti-climactic close, like when you finish off the big final demon with chip damage, but when things end on big exciting ballsy action beats, well there's nothing like it.

I love a moment that forces the players to think creatively. A movie often doesn't carefully arran...

Tremors Part 4

We haven't had one with a tone this goofy in a while. It's really fun to put ourselves back in that kind of a mode. I've always felt that the Reroll ideally occupies a tonal space that's two levels wackier than the original movie. So if the original is dead serious, ours can be a little lighthearted, and if the original is silly ours can be downright goofball. There's a sort of medium-canonness to the more far-out silly things that happen on the show. You can take them literally that they're ...

Tremors Part 3

The adventure continues! We had a month between eps due to scheduling, so, we’ve created some easter egg discrepancies between what I and my players couldn’t remember. Enjoy the search! Regardless, the insanity continues, and I’m loving every moment of this ride. I still can’t believe Dr. Jim is alive. I’m so excited to see if Rhonda picks Miguel, Val, or maybe even Earl? Speaking of, I’m constantly concerned about Earl and his growing need for reconstructive facial surgery, and D...

As you know, we were at Connecticon this weekend, which has thrown off our schedule once again. Rest assured, we are hard at work to drop and other couple of Tremors eps and a B-Roll before the end of the month! Thanks for continuing to support us and laugh along with our stupidity!

Tremors (Part 2)

As Paulo mentioned, it’s been a little crazy on my end with my dog’s recent surgery. He now has a cute neck brace and two screws and four pins and some bone cement holding his spine together. It was a life-saving and expensive surgery that was incredibly dangerous due to his size, but he’s a fighter, and now his future looks so much brighter! I’m so grateful for the skilled doctors who treated and cared for him and I urge you to get pet insurance. It saved me from making a very painfu...

Tremors (Part 1)

This one was such silly fun. It's funny how an episode's tone is sort of a collective act. We never really decide it, we kind of find it out as we're going. Tremors is a silly movie, but it's also kind of taking itself seriously, at face value. So the tone of the Reroll was not entirely clear to me going in, but then within the first couple scenes it was 100% clear that this was going to be a batshit one and I needed to match that energy. Which I tried my best to do. I should probably let Joz...

Time Bandits 5

Yeah, weird scheduling here. We originally realized that we couldn't get Tremors started in time to hit the end of May release date so we decided to squeeze in a Time Bandits; that's what it's there for. But then, between difficulties scheduling the last episode of Fifth Element and Joz and I both getting too busy to spend time on the edit, we ended up dropping Fifth Element near the end of the month, obviating the need for a Time Bandits. But we'd already recorded the Time Bandits, we weren'...

Fifth Element Part 7

Well we've reached the conclusion of Fifth Element. This one was a little unique for me just because I have a deep affection and knowledge of the original. In the end it was nice to play in this world, but I have to admit I was harder on myself as a GM and storyteller because of my childhood love of the movie.

Some movies kind of funnel you down a path, and as much as I was ready with off-ramps that had the opportunity for dramatic interest, I always felt that the most likely path would...

Fifth Element Part 6

One thought that's been on my mind for a while is the tendency in Film Reroll's long lifespan of our movies to go longer. More episodes and longer episodes. Once upon a time The Wizard of Oz going four episodes was an epic, now we go 5 to 7 for most movies. On its own I don't think it's a bad thing. And I continue to be proud of the work I do, and that very much includes the longer ones. Rogue Two is brought up to me as a lot of people's favorites, and that's the longest one we've done. But w...

Leave em in the comments here and I'll ask em for you in the Rogue 1 part 2 B-Roll! (And don't worry, I'm gonna grill Paulo on this One Ring business...)
