We first encounter the word Qliphoth in the episode of the same name, #215 (collected in volume 25). The title is written like so: 闇 (クリフォト). That kanji means "darkness" and is pronounced YAMI. It's the same than in "Beast of Darkness" and is really quite common. The katakana spells KURIFOTO.
In the episode itself, Schierke gives out the Qliphoth's full description: 闇の領域 (pronounced YAMI NO RYOUIKI), meaning "territory/region of darkness". In episode 361, when the sc...

Berserk volume 41 is officially releasing tomorrow (July 6, 2022) in France. I had preordered its collector's edition in early February and got my copy today. I figured I would snap a few pictures for those interested.
What's notable about it is that it's a bigger format, which Glénat, the French publisher for the series, hadn't done so far (and won't again, at least until the serilisation is over).
I remember that they had emphasized how big the format would be at the time, but ...

I discovered Berserk when I was in middle school.
It was a shock. (I couldn’t believe) that such an interesting manga existed in this world.
I remember I was absorbed in reading it at that time.
As an adult, after I won Young Animal’s Rookie Award, the editor Mr. S, who had been Berserk’s editor for a long time, was in charge of me and fostered me.
As my serialization stabilized, M...

In episode 366 of the renewed serialization, Schierke and Farnese witness a tumultuous phenomenon around Griffith while in their astral bodies. Schierke equates it to a maelstrom, meaning a violent whirlpool. In Japanese, the kanji used is 潮流, normally pronounced ちょうりゅう (CHOURYUU). It refers to a tidal current, like at sea.
But in this case, the pronunciation メイルストロム (MEIRUSUTOROMU) is added as furigana to the word. The term comes from Dutch originally, and...

What makes one into a god? Well, apparently sometimes being large enough is all it takes. At least that was the case with the Sea God that our heroes encountered during their sea trip to Elfhelm. In Japanese, his name is pretty straightforward: 海神.
It literally means "sea god", with the first kanji meaning sea (海, commonly pronounced UMI) and the second meaning god (神, commonly pronounced KAMI). When combined, the resulting word is pronounced かいじん (KAIJIN). We get confir...

With episode 236, as our group finds itself on the beach, the story began a new chapter called "Falconia". It was a big deal at the time for the enlightened among us because it gave us a key information about what to expect in the future: Griffith was going to get his own city.
How did we know that, though? Falconia could have just been his new eau de cologne. Well you guessed it, it's thanks to the kanji. In Japanese, Falconia is written 鷹都, with ファルコニア (FARUKO...

Continuing our series on the kanji behind proper nouns, here comes the trolls!
The katakana for troll is トロール (TORŌRU). It's afixed as furigana on the kanji 獣鬼. The word first shows up on the last page of volume 23.
獣 (KEMONO) means "beast" with the connotation of a wild beast, like something you'd hunt. It's the same kanji than in "Beast of Darkness". 鬼 (ONI) translates as "demon" or "...

He always wore a smile. He was a gentle person.
But everybody knew the vehemence that was something like a madness in him.
I’m not exaggerating; how much flame, anger, conflict and nervousness would he need to have inside to create the work that changed this world!

Here's a look at the different words used to refer to magic practitioners in Berserk. Starting of course with 魔女 (MAJO), meaning "witch", which we've seen before. That is how Flora and Schierke are often (but not always) referred to. It's also used in the title of episode 344 to describe the village in Skellig. In Japanese, like in English, 魔女 refers specifically to women, and in fact contains the kanji for "woman": 女.
MAGIC
Now, let's talk briefly about...

A number of proper names in Berserk are written in kanji with furigana attached to show the way they should be pronounced. Typically, furigana is simply used to help people know a "difficult" word's pronunciation, and that's why they're common with shounen manga, since they're aimed at children. In that case, Hiragana is used. Since Berserk is aimed at an adult audience, that's not the case.
Instead, Miura is essentially using the kanji to give additional information on the name. An unf...

To spice things up this time around, we decided to each pick three scenes in the series and submit it to the other to get his reaction. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without a gimmicky name, so we christened this... the Berserk "Splatter Platter" (like a sample platter).

The first two prizes were Berserk-themed wine bottles. Red wine for Guts, white wine for Casca. 200 bottles of each type were made available. They were produced by Mercian, a Japanese wine maker that's a subsidiary of Kirin.

That one's a mouthful: the World Spiral Tree! In Japanese, it's pronounced せかい らせん じゅ (SEKAI RASEN JU), and is written 世界螺旋樹. It's actually a pretty simple translation: 世界 (SEKAI) means "world", 螺旋 (RASEN) means "spiral", and 樹 (JU) means "tree".
Those familiar with Japanese might remark that "tree" is more commonly written 木 and pronounced き (KI). 樹 is an alternative spelling for it, and it's pronounced じゅ (JU) in this case because it's p...

The Conviction arc (断罪篇, pronounced DANZAI HEN) in Berserk is named after the nickname given to the temple of Saint Albion (聖アルビオン寺院, pronounced SEI ARUBION JIIN), which is the "Tower of Conviction" (断罪の塔, pronounced DANZAI NO TOU).
The key word here is 断罪, and it's worth noting that "conviction" can be a misleading translation for it. The dictionary defines it in English as "judgment (of a crime); conviction; condemnation." It is therefore not at all a...
