Recently I posted some process photos and mentioned I'm using smudge tools. Actually I smudging on all of my paintings in Photoshop. But first thing you need to understand is that in Photoshop, smudge tool is not optimized for making 'flat-style' paintings. (for example: anime style) It's for 'turning strokes to surfaces'. This idea is basically inspired by traditional painting/drawing, like charcoal or oil painting.

Practice - three different method

Some practices during June. The top image is preview version; you can download the bigger image from the attachment of this post.

Whenever I'm coming up with some ideas of painting method I just trying without hesitation. (And failed as expected ;_;) I never had this much drive before I start my Patreon. So I'm glad to have some place which helps me to test new ideas. :D

Practice A: Using default round brush (slightly squeezed to a flat shape) and smudge tool to do a simple shading. Fail...

After tons of fail practice, this time I am trying to simplify the sketch and using more construction lines. I'm not sure what this method is called in English...planar sculptures, perhaps? You can correct me if I name it wrong *sweat*

If I can't figure out the lighting & base color even for a simplified structure...well, it's certain that I won't be able to sculpt a more complex painting anyway. ...

Practice: two different painting methods

All done in Photoshop. And I dismiss my Cintiq and am looking at a normal monitor while painting. Finally I can see those details clearly ;o;

Improving on the shading

(I'm updating the top image because I'm testing different approaches)

Experimental painting in Photoshop.

I shaded it with simplified value, and then slowly cover it with colors. The outcome is a bit better than other paintings I had tried in these two weeks. Though it is still kinda flat but...well...if I'm running out of ideas at least I have a backup plan to finish a painting.  😅 ...

Testing paint & process

Today I open my PC and continue to work on the shading, but the idea of trying to paint lingering in my mind, so I decided to give a last chance to test some new ideas of brush settings. 

So Paintstorm Studio might be my savior for both line art & painting. Hmmmm...I need another day to know if it can be my solution. Welp, at least I can sleep better today. 😀

Shading WIP

It's been a struggle to color my work, so at least I can do some shading first, also to figure the right shapes as best as I can ;o; Even without too much values and colors it will still take me days to shade it properly. This post might be updated with more WIP images in the next few days. (So I don't need to spam too much posts on my Patreon, but you still get to know the progress I'm currently making)

Some testing paintings

I'm currently struggling for painting in Photoshop. It's hard to explain my situation, anyway I found the image on my Cintiq 13HD are too blurry and small, so after several attempts -well, actually tons of them, you can see me already having dumped many unfinished paintings on twitter for months- I decide to switch to an Intuos 4 XL and a 4k monitor for painting.

Concept of Credo's uniform

Every time I try to draw Credo, I find some parts of the original design actually...uh, make no sense. DMC4 was released in early PS3 era, so it was acceptable, and I really love his color scheme and those overdone, iconic belts. (and his thic thighs) But it is also a 10-years-old design, and to be frankly, it has been hard to make it believable every time he appears on my canvas.

Comic Process - TEW2 fanbook

Some of the footage are recorded in portrait mode. It may be awkward to look at. (0:05-5:26, 37:39-46:29) I'm drawing on a pityingly small pen display (13" cinitq) and it's hard to examine the proportion in landscape mode on such a small monitor, the short side of it is about only 16.5 cm... I swear I'll upgrade to a 24" this year even I'll be broke after that.

So here's the comic version for $1~2+ tier, about 80% finished. (no shading, no halftone, and you can see some rough sketching lines) I choose to switch between Chinese & English onomatopoeic texts because there's no enough space for both languages. TEW2 fanbook WIP

I'm currently working on the TEW2 fanbook...and yeah it's delayed.

This project was announced on tumblr & my website in January, after all the outcome was horrible, even the paper prints of the cover look bad (mostly my fault, kinda mess up with the RGB to CMYK conversion) and I needed to pay about 400 USD for the failed covers. Just like all bad luck happened on this one project.
