The first of 4 process breakdowns is up for the "Morning" set! It was a set I wanted to challenge myself with, working with 2 characters throughout, using a very specific lighting scheme as well as replicating an existing setting accurately. It was really tiring! But I learnt a lot too as well :)

A Special Event - Making a class with Coloso!

Firstly, a big thank you for all your kind comments on the recent set! I just wanted to leave you guys with one last little treat before 2024 :)

I will be making a class with Coloso in Early 2024 called “Master Class: Cinematic Illustrations” It's basically a roughly 30 hour long course that gives me the chance to really do some in depth content for folks who want the nitty gritty of the process and everything that goes into it.

Morning

I wanted to finish the set by the end of this year, and I just barely managed it! Lot's of really tough challenges in this one as always, with the natural lighting and wide scenes. Plenty to talk about in the process videos for this one :)

Lastly, I hope everyone is having a good end of year break, and maybe it's time I took mine :) Next month will be a free month (or month off), so I can catch up...

New set previews!

Since these recent sets have been getting more and more expansive and detailed, I thought it would be right to keep you guys a little in the loop! I don't want to reveal too much to keep the surprise factor every time a new set appears, but I really wanted to show a couple of environments I'm working on for the upcoming set :)

These are all done without 3D tools or any direct reference, hence the slow pace; (I really need to find time to learn some basic 3D), but it's so reward...

 But in the meantime, I'd like to share some of the discarded compositions from the recent set :) It's almost inevitable that it takes a few tries to get things right, especially when working with an unfamiliar presentation style and mood, so these trial and error attempts are really just part of the process!

The final process video of the set! To round off the set, I wanted a piece that was a bit more action-oriented, and the arcade racing bikes felt like the perfect touch. Despite my initial confidence about the plan, it was still a substantial challenge getting the composition to come together naturally, especially with all these pesky colors to work with! Day Off

Where do I even start! This has been the hardest set to attempt and put together, with the first piece alone taking so much effort and time. This time for real I wanted to draw the characters in a more casual mood (believe it or not I can count the number of times I've drawn an open mouth smile on one hand before this!), but I wanted to do it properly as well.

Hey everyone, how have you been? It's been a really hectic start of the month (midway through November already!)

I've been fully working on the upcoming set and it's definitely going to be quite a step forward for me personally in terms of color use and mood - so it's been quite a bit to handle and figure out. Just dropping by to let you know I'm really looking forward to getting it done this month along with the explanation videos!

EP31 Color Drafts (Plus Process Walkthrough)

Today's video is a light and simple (but important!) tutorial on when and how to start with a color draft on your illustrations. I've also combined in the process explanation of the latest piece to explain how the effects of a good color draft and extend onto the rest of the painting!

Carpark Dinner

It's been a while since these two have been drawn in the same piece!

I had quite a lot of fun putting this one together. My characters are usually pretty stoic looking so more relaxed expressions are definitely not in my exact wheelhouse. Mix in some difficult lighting and I've got a puzzle on my hands :)

Still, I think it's important that I at least do some exploration like this once in a while. Sometimes it's good to freshen things up a little!

I didn't quite mention it in the video itself, but the fight between getting the composition to work in it's own right versus fitting it perfectly (in terms of lighting and mood) with the previous frame was quite a lot of pain.

It also didn't help that I'm not too experienced at drawing full exposed details like those of the fridge, which meant another area of the piece that I essentially went in blind on. All in all though, I'm happy with ...

Close-ups can present a challenge all on their own, especially when it comes to framing them within a larger context. How and what to show in the environment is one of those things that you can easily just get it over and done with, but to do it well really takes a lot of thinking!

After Work 3 🌂

New work at last!

This one was a really interesting set to attempt! Once again, following the theme of this short series, I wanted to draw scenes that are filled with details. Figuring out how they all should come together was a lot of effort however - from finding the right spots to put certain things, and whether they all work together.

I'm certain I'll have a blast explaining all these in this month's process video :)
