December Reward + New Artwork

Hello friends, and Happy New Year!

I just sent out the rewards via private message. As always, they include my brushes (Photoshop and Procreate), Gradient Maps, and a 10% discount code for my store.

Thank you so much for being so kind and patient. You're the best! The delay occurred because I completely underestimated how long this current painting would take, especially with New Year's in the mix. But now that I've finally completed it, I'm excited to share the process with you.<...

2 new paintings + sketchbook pages

Hello friends,

I hope you're having a lovely holiday season! Before I sign off for the year, I wanted to share two new paintings with you. I scanned them yesterday, and while they don't have quite the same presence as the originals, I like how moody they look. I hope you like them, too!

Here are 2 sketchbook pages as well:

Sketchbook Pages + Life Lately

Hello friends,

I hope you're well! I'm surrently working on a new painting that I'll be able to show you very soon. Until then, I wanted to update you a little bit about what's been going on behind the scenes.

In October, I got myself a little garden, and I'm so incredibly excited to get to work there next year! As you can probably tell from my artwork, I love nature, and it's something that I miss so much, living in the city. So I'm looking forward to having my own sp...

New Gouache Painting!

Hello friends!

How are you doing today? We've had a surprisingly snowy few days here, which is great! I love snow; it makes everything look soft and beautiful.

But we're not here to talk about the weather, right? This month, I've been pretty busy working on things for my upcoming art book (16 January!),  but I also painted this little scene. It's based on the beautiful moss-covered rocks I saw in Norway. These days, I'm really enjoying moodier imagery, probably due to the col...

Correction: Rewards coming on Monday

Update: For the reward, I recorded a full painting process on my phone, but I used the wrong codec. Now I need to covert all the files, and it's taking ages. On top of that, I'm learning a new software because my old one crashes when I open 4k files. Did I mention that I hate making videos? I really have to find a different solution next time.
Sorry about the delay, everyone!

LA Adventures

Hello friends from sunny Los Angeles!

My friend @LuisaPreissler and I have been here for a week now, and while the main event and purpose of our trip is definitely Lightbox Expo, we've also taken this chance to explore the city. We figured it'd be fun to write a collaborative post where we each share our favourite adventures so far.

Djamila:

Indisputably, my highlight of this trip have got to be the Huntington Gardens, Library, and Art Galleries. The place i...

September Reward

Hello friends!

I just sent out the rewards via private message. As always, they include my brushes (Photoshop and Procreate), Gradient Maps, and a 10% discount code for my store. You'll be able to use the discount code for my upcoming 2024 Japan Calendar.

But this time, the rewards are a bit different, and focus on traditional painting: I've sent out a video that includes the process for a new gouache painting I made for the View Post

I visited the botanical gardens in Berlin

This year, one of my goals was to get out more, see the world, and just have memorable experiences. I went to Spain, Japan and Norway, but I also went on smaller local adventures. After my burn-out in 2021/2022, I made an effort to re-frame art in a positive way, and to integrate it into my life as more than just "my job"⸺as a source of joy and energy. So I visited more galleries and museums, sketched at cafés, took out my camera out on walks to take nice inspiration photos, and went on th...

5 new gouache paintings

Hello friends!

I've been a bit quiet on here because I'm focused on finishing my gouache paintings for my upcoming Japan calendar. I'm planning the release for 9 October, but I'll make a separate announcement!

You're the first ones to see these paintings. They are all based on scenes I saw while I was in Japan in May, and they already make me feel nostalgic. I'm having lots of fun working with traditional media at the moment; there's just somethin...

Art Book Cover Lineart

Hello friends!

This one is a MONSTER, look at all those lines in the cityscape! But I really wanted to make sure that the perspective was solid, and that the structure would hold up in the final. I'm putting extra care into this one.

I also changed the character's position, compared to the previous version. I wanted her to be turned towards the viewer and smiling at the sting rays. I hope you like it so far! See you in a million hours, once I'm done colouring.

Art Book Cover Sketch

Hello friends!

I started working on the cover for my upcoming second art book "Luminescence: Shedding Light on the Creative Process With Djamila Knopf". I wanted somethong that tied together some recurring themes of my recent artwork: cityscapes, underwater elements, and an otherworldly feel. And of course, a focus on light and colour.

It's going to be a wraparound cover, so the right half is what's in front of the book.

I must admit that I'm nervous abo...

I travelled to Norway

After talking about my trip to Japan recently, I also wanted to take you along to Norway, and tell you about my journey. It wasn't my first time visiting; I had been once before, in 2016. Back then, my friends and I visited Oslo and the rural Viken County. I loved it, especially the rocks along the coastline, and the little villages in the countryside, with their red houses that looked so perfect that you might think they were taken out of a picture book.

This time around, we went...

A World of Flowers

Hello friends, how are you this Sunday?

I spent the last few weeks on this painting, and I'm so glad I was able to finish it! Honestly, I was about to go mad because all the patterns were so repetitive.
So. Many. Flowers.

It was inspired by the flower room in the TeamLabs exhibit I saw in Japan, and I sprinkled in some Alice in Wonderland vibes. I hope you like it! The layered PSD will be part of this month's reward bundle.

Here's a close-up:

I need your opinion

As you may have noticed, I've been getting more into traditional media recently, and I absolutely love it! However, I'm still committed to delivering the Patreon rewards I promised: Layered PSD files, step-by-step images, etc. So that means that I need to create at least one digital painting per month, to be able to fulfill that promise. What I'm asking you now is:

Are you ok with me sending out the documentation of my traditional painting process as a reward instead? I...

Lots of Flowers - New Wip

Hello friends!

I'm working on a new painting. It's inspired by the TeamLabs exhibit we visited in Tokyo. They had this beautiful flower room with lots of orchids and other flowers hanging from the ceiling⸺it was magical! I wanted to paint that, and combine it with some Alice in Wonderland vibes. Right now, the sketch is still a bit convoluted with millions of lines, but I'll make sure to establish a nice visual hierarchy once I go into colours and values. Drawing all these flowers was...

Traditional Painting: Yoyogi Crossing

Hello friends!

This month was all about traditional media for me: Practicing, and getting more comfortable with it, and channeling all the inspiration I gathered in Japan.

This one is probably my favourite poster colour painting I've done so far. I love the different colours and textures in the foliage, the touches of yellow and red, and the faint grey sky. What do you think?

I also like the look of the preliminary sketch:

I painted a deer I saw in Nara

Hello friends!

I showed you the wip earlier, and now I finished and scanned the deer painting I was working on. I ended up keeping the background as it was, and decided not to go too crazy with the details. But I finished the deer, of course!

The day we spent in Nara was beautiful. But the deer can be pretty cheeky, and even aggressive. One was biting into my skirt when I walked away. They really love those senbei crackers! :D

Here's a cropped version. Which one do you prefe...

Gouache painting in progress

Hello friends!
Are you sweating, too? It's super hot and humid here right now, but I'd take that any day over those gloomy months that we just went through.

Today I'm working on a new gouache (or poster colour) painting of a deer I saw in Nara. The park was absolutely beautiful and peaceful, and I'm trying to capture that atmosphere.

I recently bought a passepartout cutter to be able to frame my traditional paintings, and to properly present them. This particular paint...
