Look To The Future

As she pointed out, I goofed up the braces -- there's no way they could get stuck that way. And she's right! I'm a poser, apologies to you all. ha ha. Ughhh!
I'm very happy with how this came out. Well, mostly. On my end of things, I think the pose got stiffened up in the final, probably should have lifted the right arm up higher, off the leg, and extended the left leg out more to liven things up. Maybe worked smaller to feel like I could open the posture up ...

Hey, gang, if housebound tonight with nothing planned or plan to be drawing some comics or assembling a Gundam model or just need to get around to folding the laundry*, my friend Paul Yellovich and I are going to be doing another live Tear Them Apart podcast hangout on Youtube at 8 PM EST. So feel free to hang out with us as we talk about what we watched in 2023, new/old, good/bad or indifferent. We'll be taking questions if anyone has any. But overall we'll be hanging out with folks online a...

Finished raw inks. Definitely some things I would change if I could, there's one major section that is a patch, but it worked out mostly okay in the end. I overworked the halo texturing, it's not as wiry and sinuous as I had it in the pencils. I tend to always overdo crosshatching/texturing sections. Making those kinds of marks on paper is a pleasurable activity, foe one thing, for another, I tend to micromanage those sections badly and usually get very intense about evening up the dens...

I pulled this old thing out to practice on before inking the "fly" variant cover I've been working on (which is finished). Look how smudged up it is. I'm all out of kneaded erasers.
Someday, somehow, in some format or other, there will be a Dork #12.
Or not. I might get run over by a team of oxen on my way to physical therapy today.
Speaking of today, I need to go to sleep.
Good night/good morning, good luck.

At some point you have to put the pencils down and pick up the inking tools. There's a few things I would like to take another stab at but this has to get finished. It never matches the roughs insofar as spontaneity, energy and "motion" goes.
I have a problem in seeing the forest for the trees, or the image for the details. I know I have a deficiency in certain things when it comes to drawing, but I try to balance that out with making an attractive image that's fun or dramatic or what h...

Shhhh. This is all secret-like for the time being.
Okay? Okay, good.
Read on.

Okay. Here's where that fly guy drawing I posted a little while back is going.
I wasn't looking at any reference other than drawings of the character when I did the first rough (above). It was a very quick proof of concept sketch, something to send an editor or art director...

I barely touch the few, old, yellowing sketchbooks I have.
I have never been much of a sketchbook-type cartoonist. Part of the reason is because I hated having a space to see my many disappointing and failed attempts at drawing. Another is that for many years, I mainly did roughs on loose pieces of typing/printer paper. When I was done with those, I could throw them out (or, nowadays, recycle them). Some of them still exist in my old, yellowing files that are stacked in my studio closet...

I don't draw the Red Skull/Baron Zemo Milk & Cheese characters anymore, because Nazis stopped being old pop culture bogeyman that you'd see getting punched out or made fun of. The pastiches appeared in a M&C-styled strip in Captain America Red, White and Blue some time back, the story was called "Der Last Time I Stormed Paris", if I remember correctly. I really enjoyed working on that one, it was editor Andy Lis's suggestion during an enjoyable and semi-memorable Ace Bar hangout in Ma...

Some of you who have stuck around since the early days of this Patreon might remember a mystery project that I talked about some time ago, which I eventually parted ways with because NFTs were involved. It was an amicable split. My longtime friend Brian David-Marshall created and was running the project, using his Emergents characters, which he developed for a trading card and online game system.
Brian asked me to write and do the layouts for a 24-page comic that would introduce the cha...
2023-12-08 05:36:26 +0000 UTC View PostHey, folks, apologies for a quiet week here. I've been pretty busy/occupied, largely because of health-related stuff. Therapist, psychiatrist and periodontist, started physical therapy for my arm and neck, tomorrow I'm seeing the neurologist again. I have an appointment with the hand specialist in early January. The good thing is my hand's doing fairly okay. And my arm is in less pain from the meds I'm on, so I'm sleeping much better. The side effect I'm not crazy about is that the pain...

In the Welcome to Eltingville pilot there's a "day in the life" montage of the Club members going about their club business, visiting various neighborhood shops and businesses in search of collectibles. One of their stops is a local toy store, which was based on the Toys R Us that used to be in the Hylan Shopping Plaza in New Dorp, Staten Island. In the 90s I used to haunt the place, mostly looking for action figures (and buying way too many of them). After our kid was born it was a place to ...

Storyboard by Stephen DeStefano.
I don't remember much about how the title sequence came about. I didn't even realize at the time that we were going into production that it was something that I was going to be dealing with. I just hadn't thought of it and I don't think it was included in the contract. It was a separate task that if I remember correctly was an extra paycheck. I think it's because someone else entirely is often involved in an opening sequence --? I'm not sure. But at some...

I scanned Stephen DeStefano's storyboard for the Welcome to Eltingville opening title sequence. I'll be posting it here in the next day or two.
In other news, my father died last week. So things have been weird. Not sad. Well, sad, but not in the way someone might expect. Like my sister said, it's a sadness for what might have been. My father is undeserving of my sadness. I would not have gone to his funeral if it was held downstairs in my dining room. As it was, he got dumped or ...

I made a mess of this one but I posted it anyway because I think the face came out really creepy. These are experiments, after all.
Speaking of which, I got a note from a backer about there being a possible mistake in the numbering. I took a look at my file and there seems to be a gap of a few missing numbers. And it looks like I may have posted a drawing twice under two numbers. When I have time I'll do a through search to see where things went wrong. I might have misplaced...

The Milk & Cheese resin figures from H&H Toys are scheduled for a third official drop on Wednesday, November 22nd. Exact time for the drop is still to be determined.
As before, these figures are hand-pulled from molds and set supplies will be limited. If things go the way they have before, they will sell out pretty quickly.
This drop will be the basic figure set, not the Glow In The Dark set (which even I don't have, yet!).
H&H announces drop times and upda...

No one's sure if it even is Davey.
The eyes seem the same. Sort of. No one wants to get close enough to get a really good look.
All it does is wail. Chris said it howls, but everyone else agrees it sounds more like wailing.
Either way, it doesn't sound like Davey.
But still. Those eyes...

If you don't follow me on Twitter -- and I wouldn't blame you if you don't -- the past month or two has been kind of bizarre for me on that site. At the same time that I was trying to ratchet down my involvement on Twitter -- for obvious reasons -- my feed gained over three thousand new followers. And they're not bots. Almost all of them are Eltingville Club fans. And they're mostly younger people in their late teens and twenties. And many of them are from South America.

Next thing I'm pushing around. Juggling in with commissions and layouts for a thing, and trying to come up with an idea for another thing.
Been dealing with multiple contracts recently. None of it is for new material, but it means I'll have some stuff out next year to push. I hope to be able to tell folks about these projects soon. One of them is a licensed item that's pretty interesting. Fingers crossed everything works out as planned.
Also, it looks like there's a po...

These bring the Hacktober index card drawings up to date, including the two I got done last week. When things settle a bit I might try to knock out a final two to finally complete the 2021 batch.
As mentioned in the previous Hacktober art dump, you can see where my original plan -- to just draw very sketchy, barely rendered figures with minimal-to-no backgrounds -- really went out the window by the time I hit this batch. Oh, well. I still had fun with these. There's about six or ...

For many, many years I wanted to see The Hideous Sun Demon. It was constantly pictured in magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland and I always thought -- as a kid -- that The Hideous Sun Demon looked kind of nifty. It took me decades and the invention of Youtube for me to finally catch up with this infamous shlock cheapie, and it's a real pile of dreck, let me tell you. Of course I enjoyed it. Mostly. It's pretty short.

I found several unfinished Hacktober index card drawings from 2021. So I finished two of them. I'm going to post them tomorrow on the plain ol' social media, hopefully I can get another one done sometime. It would be nice to have all 31 days covered for Halloween. I've thought about using these to make a zine. Or something. When I have some extra time. I mean, when I have some "extra time".
Anyway, regarding this Hacktober card. This is one of the killers (it's complicated) from t...

This was the end result of some back-and-forth between myself and the artist at the Cartoon Network that was doing the clean up drawings over my designs. You can see my anxiety all over the noes. Anytime a design went through several revisions I felt like I was annoying someone, but no one ever sent me anything for me to feel nervous about. I was very nervous during the production of the pilot.
Like Ironjaw and Jane Dickey, Ward Willoughby was added to the cast to allow me to work...

I'm going through the remaining character designs I did for the Adult Swim Eltingville Club pilot.
I haven't looked at this stuff in some time. I have two binders filled with photocopies of the pencil designs I did and the inked versions done by artist staffers at the Network. With the recent interest online regarding the pilot and the comic I'm also going to root around for the original storyboards done by Stephen DeStefano and start scanning them to post here.
