I think it’s nice that the apple dumpling gang are both southerner and hobo-coded. It’s like bisexuality for characters that wear itchy footy pajamas with a butt flap.
The bit about using pre-existing images, which is a bit that was done out of necessity, is not really that funny, and doesn't add that much, and which could probably be done better in a different comic if I went into it knowing ahead of time that that would be the crux of the humor. That being said, the only thing bei...

I can’t muster the energy to ruminate on why, but there’s something strangely pathetic about depicting yourself as a fictionalized cartoon “sona” alongside your actual, real life partner. And so, I nixed that option, even if doing so leaves the reader wondering “just who is this handsome stranger protagonizing in Beany’s latest comic?”
I genuinely have no memory of ever, ever, mentioning Kevin O’Leary to my gi...

If you take Boston’s commuter rail down to the very last stop, you can find yourself in Rockport MA. Apparently, it can get pretty touristy in the summer, but if you go in the off season, you can experience it the under the ideal conditions for any small, coastal New England town; chilly, breezy, and almost totally devoid of anyone who doesn’t belong there, the intoxicating scent of the ocean laced with just a hint of melancholy.
Rockport is not an island, obviously, more of a semi-...

Astute viewers will recognize my detestable, lazy ass re-using the AAAAAAAHHH!!!!! 20 Minute Glutes cover art from TMWWWBSASATWI for our male product in question. Hahaaaa.
I will be candid here. At time of writing it’s 4am and I have to get up in six hours to catch a train. There isn’t a whole lot that can be said about this comic. It’s a pretty old idea that has had many months, maybe even a year, to percolate and ruminate and marinate in mine Mike or perhaps Ike sized b...

Man, am I semiotically working the shit out the laugh-cry emoji in this comic or what? Just taking that fucker in my hand, and performing some linguistic Fushigi with it. (Do people remember those ads?) It’s a tonal signifier— one that seems to say “I’m dumb, but actually, you are.”
There was an unused segme...

At the time of writing this, I have no idea what the reaction to this comic will be. Will it be celebrated, universally, by the visual artist caste, their foggy and formless whorl of feelings toward AI art now made lucid, reflected oh so perfectly back at them, a gifting of words by their brilliant and generoush cousin, The Writer?
To put more bluntly— will I receive comments, as I sometimes do, saying “wow, thanks for putting exactly what I felt into words” or “Relatable!”

Oop, a gaming joke! Tick that one off your 2023 beany checklist, and shame on me for saying I’de never do another. Still, I’d like to think I bring a certainly quality (quality) to the gamer comic that genre that was otherwise missing. Go ahead and check off “David Wallace reference” while you’re at it as well. One unused idea I had was to have my ideal game turn out to be the same thing but with DFW’s face on the gun, who would periodically wax poetic about the mundane admirabili...

Sometimes, when you’re in the game of making comedy generalizations, you gotta kinda take a swing, not in the dark, per se, but in low-light. I am not a particularly big rap guy (I like Kendrick, I like some Kid Cudi, I like Jpegmafia, for hairline reasons) but I am well enough aware of the general culture to know that at some point, people stopped making albums called like “Peanut Butter N’ Thuggin” that featured an insanely grainy photo of four dudes in gigantic clothing flipping of...

A comic parodying “those” kinds of t-shirts. They’re so culturally minute and specific that we don’t really have a specific term for them, yet have such distinctly recognizable trends and aesthetic flavor that they can be effectively parodied.
Scrapped ideas:
1. A shirt that said
“LETS GO BRANDON”
then below, in smaller text
“BRANDON IS THE NAME OF MY TEENAGE SON, WHO HAS AUTISM. WE ARE ALL VERY PROUD OF HIM”
This is probably funnier than, s...

It would have been easy to just use this as an opportunity to draw a bunch of obscure characters I personally like, but at that point why not just draw full-on fanart? I wanted each character’s costume to be something they would actually pick, revealing a little tidbit about each of their personalities.
Will and Astrid: I think for most adults, Halloween becomes a holiday where you more or less abandon fantastical costumes in favor of using the opportunity to look nic...

If it isn’t clear, that first twitter avi is supposed to be a woman’s ass in a skirt. No special reason, I guess— I just feel like I see the kinds of avatars pop up a lot on norm twitter. I suppose that makes Archibaldo a woman’s name? There is no intention here to make a point about whether these kinds of sex-sells twitter girls have a disproportionally more pedestrian media diet, or worse opinions, or anything of that nature. I haven’t the faintest what these types of women actual...

I think it's almost become a running joke how bad the patreon thank-you comics end up looking, but in this case, that last panel is supposed to look bad.
If you want some highly potent unintentional comedy, I would encourage everyone to check out the referenced video. Every line from the comic is verbatim.

It can be a little difficult to play up themes of a savage, unforgiving frontier without playing into racist stereotypes regarding indigenous people, especially in a specifically American context. It can even harder when you want to turn what was geographically Mexico into one giant Cormac McCarthy Doom level. Of course, necessity is the mother of invention. How do you dodge the potentially slightly racist undertones of implying that every Mexican person is a flesh-eating de...

Ah! Chapter 2. It’s a shorter one this time, and it took longer than I expected, but I think I am settling into a good pattern of work with my new job, so I should be able to bang these out quicker.
Gareth is loosely based on a real camp counselor I briefly had when I was in high school (I think?). My memories of him are almost nonexistent aside from the fact that he was hairy, long-haired, bespectacled, and from a distinct memory of him putting on a goofy nerd voice and saying “I s...

My surrealist-writing chops perhaps aren’t as up to snuff as I’d like; does that visual analogy in the first sentence of paragraph 2 make sense? The idea is that the “barista telling me about his day” scenario is such an immediate and grotesque descent into abject horror, that it would NOT ONLY be akin to someone opening up the gates of hell and unleashing it upon the world, but would MORE ACCURATELY be akin to someone doing so via a grotesque asscheek-pulling-apart motion, just to ad...

I worry that there's a sort of racial 'fly in the ointment' to this joke. A large part of the humor of the joke sort of relies on this conception of "the hood" as something other, and as the child's upbringing and lifestyle as decidedly not that. In that case, using the visual shorthand of "nice little white boy", in the form of Ceasar, would make more sense. But a stunt like this is decidedly more in-character for Brock, who, despite being PoC, has had an extremely isola...

That's the name we settled on? Really? Well, whatever.
Thus concludes our little prologue. Ultimately, the quality of joke is not entirely up to my standard, but such is usually the case with most Pilot episodes. Establishment of premise is sort a clunky affair. In any case, I'm confident the next couple "chapters" or whatever will be funnier and arrive speedier. Ordinary comics will resume too, of course, provided sufficient inspiration is available.
Wish I h...

Man, I really can't overstate how much I've agonized over Calbain's design, especially his hair-- trying to fit a "culturally omnipresent and enigmatic creature of yore"-shaped-peg into an "anime character"-shaped hole, without having the end result look like Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. A lot of character design choices about trying to make the character look thematically appropriate clashing with what intuitively looks good. I think I've mostly got it figured out, now, alt...

Someday, someone will write an essay about how I took perfectly fine comedy stories about the absurdities of day to day life, and then ruined them by adding a bunch of superfluous anime bullshit, forever hamstringing my chance at mainstream success. Oh well. At least it looks cool.

Not super satisfied with the visuals on this one-- text feels a little too small, composition isn't great, and the colors are all muddled. Doesn't *pop* like it should. Learning to work in a more visually dense style like this will necessitate some growing pains ( compared to say, bad enders, which was essentially all white and background-less). I will probably be trying out some different compositional techniques going forward. Expect my tree-drawing abilities to improve, too.
