Hi faithful readers! Been a while since I sent a message and I wanted to share a few things.

First, I apologize for not posting more the past six weeks. Work has been very hard, and I've been struggling a bit with self-care.

Second, a beautiful soul in our community has been battling cancer. She's not doing well. I'm doing my best to stay hopeful. I've been taking it very hard; I haven't cried so hard in a long time. It makes it difficult to stay focused on stories.

Lastly, ...

"Are you sure you know how to do this,” Jamie asked. His bear had definitely seen better days, but he was wary of Becky doing something to it that couldn’t be undone.

“I’ll be very careful. And you can pick out any fabric you like,” Becky assured Jamie. “I just want you to like it.” Though she hoped he wouldn’t pick something too expensive. She expected to waste a lot of material as she learned by doing.

For his part, Jamie was not so sure about her sewing a new co...

Every woman has been there: laying back with their feet in stirrups and their lady parts on display. Not at all one of the fun things about being a woman, and it helps to get through the moment if you try your darnedest to not picture yourself from the doctor’s POV. I was thinking about that as I changed Gordy’s diaper. His changing table, that he designed himself, has stirrups, which is actually brilliant. I’m not sure if they help him change himself, but they definitely help those cha...

“I am so mad at you,” Mary said to me. “Do you understand? Not disappointed. I am actually mad at you.”

I’m very wise, ya know, like I have wisdom and stuff? I was drawing upon that wisdom when I didn’t answer her question even though, yes, I did understand cuz she had me by my elbow kinda hard as she marched me up the stairs. But I kinda sorta knew when I did what I did that she’d be super mad about it. I just decided to do it anyway.

And Mary’s not dumb. She knew...

“I could’ve done this myself,” Gordy said to me for the millionth time from flat on his back on his changing table. “You don’t have to change me every time.”

Let’s see … What are some plausible reasons for why I change him when he can do it himself? It’s not because I’m faster at it; he’s had enough practice to win races. It’s not because he doesn’t do a good (enough job). It’s because … I like to. And why do I like to? Because at that moment standing over ...

“Thanks for agreeing to talk with me,” Jamie said as he sat in the chair opposite the couch, where Becky was seated. Becky was thrown by his formality, something he did a lot less of since his arrival, when he tended to want to talk like this, seated opposite each other as if in a business meeting.

“Of course,” Becky replied, trying to lighten the tone, “What’s up?”

Jamie cleared his throat. “I don’t ask for much, as I think you’ll agree. I go with the flow. I ...

"I wish you’d give my mom a break,” Jamie said to Ella.

"I just said she ought to have figured a few things out better by now. That’s all. I didn’t mean anything by it.”

"I like the way she treats me.”

"Okay.”

"I … It’s not like you and Stacy. Mom wanted a little, and I wanted to be adopted.”

"But you didn’t want everything that came with it,” Ella pointed out.

"I didn’t know what I wanted. And I like how things are now. Isn’t th...

“It’s been two days, Jamie,” Becky reminded him. “It’s only going to get worse if we wait.”

“But I don’t want to,” Jamie reminded Becky. He’d been pretty clear on that.

“I don’t want to either. One more day, and I’m taking you to the doctor.” Jamie hated going to the doctor. There were too many shots and grabby nurses. “And they’ll just do the same thing. Would you rather have me do it or them?”

That was no real choice at all. Jamie sat on h...

“I’m ready,” Ella said as she laid next to Jamie in his crib.

“Well, I’m gonna need another ten minutes,” he replied as he laid next to her naked.

“Not that, stupid.”

“Then what?”

“For my family. I’m ready to see them.”

“O. That’s ... wow.” Jamie didn’t know how he felt about that.

“I know. I just, I don’t know, why wait longer?”

“Have you spoken with them or written them or anything?”

“No. I decided...

Getting my butt beat by Mary reminded me of something: I fucking love spanking! So much so that I’ve been giving Mary excuses (kinda insisting actually) to smack my butt on the regular. It’s hard to come up with fresh ways of misbehaving, but I’m nothing if not creative. Not a problem for me ff course, cuz I’m creative and all the other things too. And I thought I had a really good one.

“Mary,” I said to Mary to start off my confession, “I have something to confess.”

Jamie was doing what he always did when he was uneasy: clinging to Amanda. She was trying to be sympathetic, but it was just too hot to be holding a little.

“Jamie …”

“What do you think she’s talking about today,” he interrupted her.

“I don’t know, buddy.” Whenever Ella was at Dr. Mary’s, Jamie would get like this, nervous, like he was expecting her to show up the next day with terrible news or be terribly unhappy. Amanda and Becky both knew what was weig...

“Well,” Jamie said as he stood in the living room and looked around, “it’s bigger than my last apartment.”

“Ha! I’m sure,” Amanda replied. “Do you like it?”

“I like it enough. You saw this one already?”

“Yeah.”

“Did you check it out?”

“Like how?”

“Check all the faucets, check all the light switches, check the cabinets and doors, listen for your neighbors.”

“Oh. Then, no.”

“Good thing you brought me t...

Jamie nodded at Ella, who nodded back. Being littles gave them license to do things they otherwise never would, and Ella’s unique circumstances meant she never really got in trouble, while Becky and Amanda were so gentle they never got very upset with Jamie. When it came to bigs Jamie thought were mean, past experience had taught him he was virtually immune from punishment, and this was so worth it.

Ostensibly, they were at the park celebrating Jamie’s arrival day along with friends...

“You can call me Mary.”

“I know,” Ella said as she paced in Mary’s office looking at the diplomas on the wall and the human psychology journals and books on the shelves. “Jamie told me about you,” she added flatly.

“What did Jamie say?”

“That we’ll talk, and I’ll feel better.” Jamie believed that, and Ella did, too, most of the time.

“How do you feel today?”

Ella shrugged her head to the left. “Average.”

“And what is your...

“How can he be comfortable like that,” Becky asked as she sat down on the couch next to Amanda. Jamie was in the playpen asleep with his knees under him, his butt in the air, his teddy bear under his chin.

Amanda shrugged. “I tried straightening him out and he just kinda snapped back into that position.”

“Weird.”

“Kinda cute though.”

“His back is gonna hurt when he wakes up.”

“And one of us will massage it for him. I think it’s time we adm...

I’m just a mess lately. I admit this. A messy mess. An overheated hot mess. I mean, I’m fine like I always am cuz I keep myself busy being a paragon and stuff, but also like, holy shit.

And for what reason am I this fine? I don’t even know, but I’m fine in a way that’s not and sure would like to get to the bottom of it. So what did I do? Well, if you’ll shush and stop interrupting me with your questions, then I shall tell you what I did.

I would’ve noticed Mary’s surprised I-can’t-believe-she-just-said-that face, but I was too busy thinking to myself, holy fudge muffins, Daphne, I can’t believe I just said that! Cuz I still can’t believe I said that. True story.

Mary got visibly anxious with the clenching and unclenching of her fists and pacing in such a tight circle that really she just turned around and turned around again. It would’ve made me very nervous, but (A) I had already made myself very n...

“Okay,” Mary said in her I’m-fed-up-with-this-frosty-silence voice when we were getting ready for bed after we got home, “what did I miss? You were doing okay, and then you got the look.”

“What look,” I didn’t say in the most passive aggressive you-mean-this-look-and-this-matching-tone-of-voice tone ever?

“That look.” Ooo, big Miss Mary folding her arms like she has a valid point just because her point is valid. Well, screw that!

I had to basically fight off Mary. That’s always fun when it’s cuz she’s thirsty, but this was more along the lines of, “We never go to dinner parties. Lemme dress you up.” She was giving off serious mom vibes, specifically the vibes my mom who would always insist that for any remotely special event, she decided what everyone wore. But I can dress myself just fine. I was pretty and everything. I mean, it wasn’t even a fancy dinner party. Even calling it a dinner party overstates h...

“Daffy,” someone sang to me. “Daaaaaaffffy. I think you’ve slept in long enough.”

O friggin fine. I rolled over and greeted her with, “Urrrrrrrrrrrrf!”

“How are you still sleepy? You’ve been asleep for ten hours.”

“No circadian rhythm shaming.” I’m not a morning person, and I’m not an evening person. I thrive between eleven in the morning and one in the afternoon. I’m a mid-day person, one of The Lunch People. Rare is the day Mary lets me sleep ...

“So how’s the job hunt going,” Amanda asked Mel.

“Well, I’m at your house in the middle of the day. You do the math.”

“You’ll find something.”

“Don’t get too impatient,” Jamie chimed in. “Unless you go into teaching you’re not gonna get another summer vacation for a very long time.”

“What kind of job are you looking for,” Ella asked.

“The kind that pays well enough for me to move out. I’ll take just about anything.”

“Sound a little bratty to me still.” Spankspankspankspank!

“The same.” Jamie was doing his best to keep his voice even and his eyes from rolling.

“Go to your Nana’s.” This was the directive ringing in my ears, a tinnitus suspiciously resonant with the lingering vibration in my butt. Yep, ladies and boys (mostly boys, buncha pervs), Mary is definitively back at work. I can tell cuz she’s been saying stuff like, “Daffy, can you not see I’m working?” It well and truly (Truly? Yes, truly.) sucks that she can’t do fun stuff during the day.

“It’s not like she’s gonna hurt him,” Becky was telling Amanda.

“That’s not what I’m worried about,” Amanda responded. They were out of options. It had to be done. “Let’s go tell him.”

They walked to the living room, where Jamie didn’t hear them coming. He always wondered how such large creatures could be so quiet. They were always sneaking up on him, especially when he was in the playpen. Why he was in the playpen, he didn’t know. They weren’t going an...

Heaven forfend someone complains or something that a cute redhead can’t just watch her show without some big, tall bully walking into the room like she owns the place even though both their names are on the deed and just order me to stand up. So already, tables turned. ‘Wuh’ is kind of a Daffy response to being woken up.

“Mary. C’mon, wake up.”

“What time is it,” she claims to have asked. I’ll trust her on it; sounds like a Mary question.

Gordy took me to a pizza place. We live in a college town, right? They’re ubiquitous and fall into three categories: good if you’re kinda drunk, family-friendly, and expensive. I have this one friend - okay, acquaintance - who makes no secret that she’s going to school to pursue Mrs. and would dump any boy who took her to a pizza place on a date, but I happen to be a pizza enthusiast. Yes, the best babysitter in town is that basic a bitch, I guess.

“Well, they are sad,” Mel said in response.

“So how do we snap them out of it? I mean, it’s fine that they’re sad, but this whole thing could go on for months. They can’t just be this miserable the entire time.”

Stacy decided to let the lawyer explain it all to Ella. She tried to rehearse what she would say, but she had a hard enough time grasping it herself. She decided to go to the attorney’s office and let him do it. Ella listened.

“That could happen, yes,” the attorney answered.
