Based on some of the feedback I decided to re-shot the last half of the video after spending some more time with the device so I could do a better job demoing it. I also attempted to compose and perform something on it as well. So I go over a lot more on the device and some uses and have far less meandering. This should be a more satisfying outcome in the end. It did end up being a lot longer though which I'm not thrilled about but I couldn't find a whole lot to trim in the new section that w...

I would be interested in some feedback on this one because it was a departure from my recent videos and a return to the style of video I started out making. I'm frequently recommended to try making lower production quality videos in fill in the space between my big ones and this is a much more real attempt at that than the RGB lights video I just did. The lower production value made this easy to make taking only two days to finish and it could have be...

Alright, this video is now done. There is some kind of visual artifact after the intro that I don't know why happened but it did it twice with different renders. It make be a problem with the new version of the editing software I tried this time. I'll look into it more later to try and fix.
I'm less sure about this thumbnail, I don't really know how to summarize or tease this video in an image form.
I still need to put the description together and finalized the subtitles. But I...

This is a fairly early look at the next video. It has some rough edges, "by" instead of "at" in the beginning, ungraded/color-corrected clips, and missing some some things like a schematic visual and the intro and outro. But I wanted to give you an early look at this video since it's been a while since I've had a project finally work out and finish.
The project itself turned out much better than I thought it would and I hope some people can actually make use of it. I have everything up...

Hello, I've still been working on stuff in the background. The VGA capture video is pretty much fully researched at this point and I have about half to two thirds of the script done for it. It's just ended up being way more complex than I thought because there are a lot of small details you could overlook that can completely ruin the capture if you don't know about them. So I'm having to get into the weeds with how video encoding works a bit and it's added a whole other layer of complexity on...

Here is the video that I had nearly done that I mentioned in the last update. I did rough color correction on most of the shots but it's not a fully polished video by any means. I'm beginning to form an idea of how I could present this when it's all over but it won't be a smooth video like I planed to do here. It'll be a much rougher video where I'll just talk about what happened.
Since the new motherboard came in and didn't solve the problem I've begun the RMA process on on the CPU. I...

I wanted to give everyone an update where I am with this. I'm going crazy trying to finally get this done and while I think and hope I'm getting close to the end I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to be able to make a video out of it at this point.
UPDATE:
The new motherboard did come in yesterday. It didn't solve the problem. But I was advised to increase the voltage on the CPU and that finally changed something with it making it seem more stable.
As of now I've done a lot m...

I'm getting good at picking projects that are full of problems, frustrations, and delays...
I built a new editing system that I wasn't really planning on and I'm working on a video about it, or at least I'm trying. I have been having a constant issue with my editing software on this system for some reason. It just keeps hard freezing and not coming back. I haven't been able to get it reliable for editing a video yet. There are a lot of variables for the diagnosis that I'm working throu...

Pending any issues cropping up, this should be the final version of this video.
Changes from the last version:
- A note about SVGA mismatching and some cuts to make it matter less and be slightly smoother
- V Sync animation
- Interface pinout animation while discussing the CGA,EGA,VGA differences
- Intro added
- Supporter outro properly timed
- Small color corrections
This was a way more complicated video to make than I envisioned it would be when I started it....

Hello, I am so sorry for how long it has been since my last video. This project has just been one thing after another with delays and things that pop up. This isn't a final version of this video but it's at least at watchable stage now. I need to add a lot of on screen text elements, a few images, and create an animated segment for the porch area around V Sync (that will make sense as you watch the video).
I didn't want to just re-iterate the exact same things about VGA and CRTs that I...

Hello, I know it's been a while since I've had a video ready but it's been one of those projects that keeps feeling like it's going to over after just one more thing and then another thing pops up after that.
I built a new VGA capture system with proper VGA capture hardware this time. I've got an Epiphan DVI2PCIe and a Datapath VisionRGB E1s in it. Both were are supposed to be compatible with Linux and I've had no end of problems getting them set up. I've had to contact custo...

I am setting up a new modern system that will be getting featured in a video soon. But I wanted to dual boot linux and Windows on it for hardware support reasons. I've been meaning to detail some of the things I picked up about setting up a nice duale boot system for a while and having the new website gave me a great place to do that.
I had to change my wordpress theme because the old one handled the special text formatting very poorly. I haven't got this one fully customized yet and I...

I've finally gotten around to making a proper website and have put some stuff up on it already. One of the things I'm looking forward to is being able to create addendums for my videos as a text post after they are released. I put one together for the SK-88 video here: https://techtangents.net/2020/0...

Here is the super long cut of the SK-88 repair video. I felt this was too long but I explain a few of my thoughts for some things in a lot more detail in this. Mostly for the 3D printing. So it may be of interest if you were curious about that.

This is the first project at my new workbench! I'm not totally thrilled with the lighting in the wider shots but I think it may have been good for up close shots.
This is repairing the second Roland SK-88 I have that was bought as parts to fix the one I reviewed. So it had multiple things wrong with it that I had to resolve before it was ready to go. I'm pretty pleased with the results at the end though!
There will be an extra long version of this video I'll be posting here a li...

Getting this thing installed and setup was an unexpected detour from my projects but a very welcome one! I now have a proper workbench for designing and repairing things! I mention it about 30 times in the video but I am so excited to finally have a solution for my work area like this. It completely changes how I get to approach projects now.
I didn't really cover it in the video, but the only downside and the reason I didn't build something like this myself is that it reduces the over...

Consider this a preview upload, something went wrong between the rendered file and the upload. The actual file looks fine but this is a little too contrasty and saturated. It's probably the color stuff I've been working on recently, I'll probably have to re-grade the video and re-render it with different settings.
There was a lot that was new in this video for me, I'm shooting with a new lens, this is a new color method in my editing software, and I'm using some new techniques for chec...

I kind of just wanted to do one of these because it had been a while and needed to reassemble a keyboard. So I put two and two together and this is the result!
I had the lights a bit too close to me when I was filming this and it was the first "video" I've edited after a few changes that I mention in the video. Now that I'm looking at it again I think I over corrected myself in color grading and made everything else too dark. Well, practice makes perfect.
Oh also in this I kind ...

I'm posting this one a little later than usual because I have been working on it right up until now to get it done for release tomorrow.
But here's a video on rebuilding a Gateway 2000 G6-333 with it's original Windows 95 install! I was very graciously sent this system and it's been a lot of fun getting it up and going. I didn't have any examples of a complete period OEM system from the mid 90s so I kinda dig this thing.
This wasn't the video I set out to make on it though, I ac...

I was sent this calculator in the last mail video and it is just one of the coolest simplest things I've come across. This is just a fun little look at putting it through its paces to see how you can use it.
UPDATE: I fixed the audio and the visual fade I wanted. This will be the final version now.

Here's the final version of the Tiny Pentium PC's MIDI upgrade. This has the hardcopy supporter print out in it as well! Thank you to everyone who jumped on to that. After setting it all up it turned out to be a bit cooler than I thought an I look forward to it evolving in the future!

Hello! I am finishing up the next video right now and rendered out a pre-release version of it here. I've got a few more things to tighten up and a couple of graphics to add. This is also going to be the first hardcopy supporter video, it's not included in the preview yet because I wanted to spend a bit of time after figuring out how best to shoot that rather than rush it at the end. So that will be included in the final version. If you have any suggestions/critiques, I could more easily make...

As I mentioned in a post I have been thinking about adding a tier for printing out names at the end of videos on an interesting printer. Well I'm ready to try it out now!
The new tier has been added and I figured I would go over what all my plans are for it!
I have too many vintage printers, typewriters, I almost bought a ditto machine, and I have a couple plotters so I clearly have a fascination with the physical storage of information. I think it would be fun to take a list of...

I've been toying with the idea of playing some of my older games in streams on Twitch. I finally gave it a shot and rather enjoyed it. Here's a recording of it.
This isn't exactly my normal content so I don't know if everyone would prefer me posting these types of videos here or mention when I'm planning on going live. So I would appreciate feedback on this. For now I'll assume not, but I'll mention that recordings will get put up on the second channel like this video and my Twitch cha...

I think I mentioned this ins one of my behind the scenes videos that I'm been considering this idea and I keep forgetting to record a sample before the end of the month so I can ask what everyone thinks of the idea.
For this I would add an alternative $5 tier that would be opt in to be put on a list of names that I would once a month add to a file that I would print on a printer from my collection. I'll rotate out different printers different months so there is some variety. I'll recor...

This was an interesting video to tackle that didn't really go how I planned. I thought it was going to be much harder to get 4 floppy drives installed and working once I finally got my hands on a 4 drive controller. But, they just worked. I had absolutely no problems with it at all.
So this video ended up being more of an exploration of why 4 floppy drive support was dropped and how it worked rather than just trying out the card. And in the end, I was just left annoyed that al...

I'm finally opening viewer mail that's been sitting around for way too long!
This video was delayed by really bad internet issues that kept me from being able to upload it for three days. Sorry for the delay, I tried a bunch of different things and had some help but I couldn't get anything work well enough until my internet finally just came back. It made me realize I don't really have a contingent which kind of sucks but there's not a lot I can do about that.
Well anyway, the n...

Hello!
I've been meaning to make one of these for a while and I had a fun idea on how to do this one.
One correction, at one point I think I say "mid March" when I meant "mid May". It really feels like April was just skipped this year and I keep making that mistake.
