May production diary: who has two thumbs and no bugs?

IT'S ME, BABY!

A few days ago, our neighbours texted us to let us know they thought they had bedbugs. I've dealt with my share of household pests before (#renterlife), but this seemed really bad, I've seen them properly mess up lives! Dealing with this possibility sort of derailed my whole week, as I scrambled to wash and dry all our stuff, toss it into garbage bags, ...

Welcome back to my ~tw1st3d m1nd~...

My new video came out a week ago, and what a week it's been! It seems to be doing really well. It feels weird to celebrate the success of something so dark – I don't exactly like that it's resonating with people, but I hope people are finding it helpful.

After wrapping up the video, I plunged into something even more intense – writing nearly a video'...

EARLY ACCESS: The Feminist to Far-Right Pipeline

At times like this, I guess all you can do is laugh.

Here's the new video, gang! Woohoo!! I wanted to make sure I could stand behind the first version anyone would see, so I'd say the video is 95% complete – all I've got left is colour grading, and adding music + some minor graphics.

I'd love to know what you think. This thing is a behemoth, so I may have missed a spot here and there - please let me know if so :)

What do you want to see from me this year?

Hey, folks! I'm contemplating where to turn my attention after wrapping up this current video. At any given point, I have several pages of notes on videos I'd like to make. Most of them will never see the light of day, but here are a handful from the list that I think could be worth exploring.

I'd love to know - which one of these ideas intrigues you the most? Which seems the most relevant to our current moment, or like it hasn't been done before?

February production diary: the fascist creep, and some absolute bangers

Over the past few months, "the gender identity debate" has broken into the Canadian mainstream for the first time. Canada's nascent gender-critical movement is not purely a pseudo-feminist one or a Christian one – instead, it's a bewildering coalition of feminists, edgy populists, the Christian right, Muslim organizations, and honest-to-god neo-Nazis. People who seem like they should have little in common are suddenly finding a lot of common ground in opposing us.

January production diary: we called it and it came

Hey gang! I hope you've had some rest over the holiday season, and your year's gotten off to a good start. I have to admit, I've been living the dream this past week, mostly just... hangin' out. Playing some games, watching new stuff (read on for recommendations), and tending to friendships I struggle to find enough time for! It's been great – I really needed this after the whirlwind that was December.

I'm getting back to work now, because my next project is too darn cool to stay away...

Final version out now: “Is AI Making Us Less Human?”

“From police robots to AI avatars, the tech industry uses human empathy as a tool for evil.”

We did it gang!! No clue how I turned this around in 5 weeks, but I’m so glad to have it out before the holidays. Truly hope you enjoy. 💜

EARLY ACCESS: Is AI Making Us Less Human?

My new video is about how the tech industry uses our empathy against us, and creates a less trusting society. It needs some polish, and you'll notice a few missing graphics, but this is basically it! Hope you enjoy :)

Early look at the next video: I deepfaked myself & it broke me

My next video is called "Is AI Making Us Less Human?" and it's about the erosion of trust that's started since AI-generated speech/images have become convincing. I deepfaked myself, it took an hour and cost $30, and I can't stop thinking about it. Messed up, dude.

Enjoy!!! Full video out later this month :)

Final version out now: Transition Regret & the Fascism of Endings

Polished it up, added a bit of new stuff! Good time to check it out if you missed the early access.

I have an agreement with a sponsor to release one more video before the end of the year, and… I’m kinda stumped. I have a few ideas, but nothing that can be completed in 6 weeks! So I guess this is me soliciting themes/topics for a shorter, somewhat simpler project. Anything you’d like me to cover in the next video?

EARLY ACCESS: Transition Regret & the Fascism of Endings

I made this video to process my feelings about some health complications I’ve had since getting a gender-affirming surgery in 2021. I noticed most discussions of trans regret are simple tragedies, which don’t pave a path forward for the people experiencing it. That isn’t true to my experience, and I wanted to figure out what comes next.

Gradually, I expanded my scope to ask: “When we declare something has ended – like a life, or a crisis – what kind of suffering does that gi...

October production diary: In order to hear the birds...

I cannot lie to you, gang, I’ve tried to write a poetic prod diary twice this month, and each time, by the time I’ve neared the end, the things I said no longer felt true. This iteration is less cohesive than the others, but I don't think I'm pretending to know everything, which I take as a good sign. Everything is in flux right now – which, at the very least, has been gorgeous in my neighbourhood.

Where do I put this thing?

Look what just came in the mail!! Pretty funky that it’s a mirror in there.

The idea of displaying this thing has me a little embarrassed, like it feels showy and I know my friends will poke fun at me every time they see it? 😅 But I think putting it somewhere really goofy will help.

Drop a comment with where you think I should put it up, like other people’s comments to cast a vote for their idea! Whichever one gets the most votes wins (with the caveat that Vic has veto powe...

LIVE in 1 hour: 100K subscriber celebration stream!

Hey gang, it's been a while! An hour from now (at 7PM EST), my partner Vic & I will be going live to celebrate the channel reaching the absolutely wild 100 000 subscriber threshold. We'll be baking a celebratory coffee cake, chatting about whatever people want to chat about, and hopefully raising some money to help my dear friend get a gender-affirming surgery she needs. EARLY ACCESS: 2010s Pop Feminism: A Painful Look Back

The longest, most ambitious video I've ever made – a pretty comprehensive look back at a mass movement that promised to change the world, and then, well, didn't. I gave this one my all. I hope you get something out of it.

I'll be editing right down to the wire, so this version isn't final. Main thing is that it's missing about a quarter of its graphics, but generally it's very close to the version that'll go up on YouTube.

As a wise woman (my friend Sadie) once said, LET'S GOOO!...

July production diary: Live! From the rummage heap

This weird place I found

After a rough morning last week, I found myself wandering down Montreal's longest street, Gouin boulevard. It's a pretty boring walk – car-centric and residential – but taking aimless walks in not-especially-walkable places has been my main mental health strategy since I was like, fifteen.  Exploring these oversized, hostile environments makes me feel more human in contrast, and makes whatever signs of life I do find, even the odd w...

NEW ARTICLE: Salt, Fat, Neon Hell (or, "Why open a cyberpunk-themed restaurant?")

I'm thrilled to share this article I wrote for the new issue of Maisonneuve Magazine. It's a review of NEOTOKYO, a self-described "cyberpunk noodle bar" that just opened in downtown Montreal. The restaurant is mediocre – it's basically one big Instagram backdrop, with the food a secondary concern – so I used my visit as an opportunity to examine how digital worlds are encroaching on the physical world, a phenomenon cyberpunk itself predicted 40 years ago. EARLY ACCESS: Why Are People Trans?

Happy to get this video to you a full week ahead of YouTube! Everything is finished, except the music – that'll help with the pacing and make things more emotionally resonant, if you'd rather wait for the full release.

For 30 years, scientists have searched for a biological cause of trans identity... and haven't found much.

Why do we want to find a cause, anyway – and what do we do with the questions science can’t answer?

I go some pretty vulnerable p...

The Aesthetics Wiki masterlist – my notes on 683 internet aesthetics

You asked (2 months ago), we answered (just today, because I forgot)!

Here's the document I used to work through the Aesthetics Wiki while producing my video "Millions of Dead Vibes". I sorted nearly all 683 of the aesthetics into a handful of categories, and took sassy lil' notes in the margins.

Take a gander for entries like:

EARLY ACCESS: Everything Is Sludge: Art in the Post-Human Era

My new video is about content sludge, the surreal TikTok genre where several unrelated videos are played side-by-side.

"These videos have gained a reputation for being creatively bankrupt, incredibly overwhelming, and Almost impossible to look away from. Sludge videos flood people’s feeds and rack up millions of views, because as disdained as they are, they’re also incredibly easy to watch."

How did a genre that everyone hates take over ...

EARLY ACCESS: Millions of Dead Vibes: How Aesthetics Hurt Art

My sequel to "Millions of Dead Genders" is about the Aesthetics Wiki, a group of young people trying to explain the entire modern world with visual media. It's my longest one ever, even without the credits!

I kind of went wild with this one. Really hope you like it!

I'm still finishing the graphics for the first few minutes, but everything past that point is pretty polished. If you'd like to wait for the final release, that'll be tomorrow evening :)

POLL: on changing my video credits

Recently, a couple Patrons (and other viewers) have remarked that the spoken credits at the end of my videos are too long – understandable, since they include upwards of 100 names at this point!

People have suggested I replace them with more traditional scrolling-text credits. I don't feel strongly either way, but I'd love to know how y'all feel about the idea, since y'all are the ones being named! I wouldn't want anyone to feel shafted by the change.

So what do you think...
