Milk & Cheese "Merv Griffin" Full Page Recreation

I'm still looking it over to see if there's any little mistakes or unfinished corrections in the details. But otherwise, I'm calling this way overdue commission done. Whew.

The original is one of my best-known comics. I am fond of it and I'm happy folks like it but it's hard for me to look at the printed comic (I finally sold the page a few years ago after holding onto it for nostalgic reasons. I realized I can't pay dental and car repair bills with nostalgic reasons, so, yeah. It's lin...

Interview/Cover Alert: Jack Kirby Collector #85

I recently got my comp copies of The Jack Kirby Collector #85 which features my cover inks over an previously unpublished Kirby pencil drawing, as well as a four-page interview I did about Kirby, his influence on my work and the Kamandi animated series bible/pitch that Sarah and I worked on for WB some years ago.

To my surprise the cover was printed like an animation cel, on clear plastic over a background. pretty nifty. The art was colored by Tom Ziuko. If I have it right, the issue sh...

Just Backed Out Of A Cover Gig Because...

...it was for the Rick and Morty comic.

And if you read the news today, you saw that the co-creator of the series, Justin Roiland, has been arrested on federal domestic battery and false imprisonment charges. Fucking ugh.

This past week I've been going back and forth with Oni Press about doing a variant for an upcoming series. It was nice to be asked (I'm not asked to do much these days by comics publishers) and while I didn't watch the show I figured the characters are supe...

Make Marks On Paper: Metal Men #1 Script (Pgs 1-6)

This is a public post providing some script pages for artists (who are uncomfortable writing their own stuff) to use for storytelling practice. It's obviously superhero/action-based, so, people who like the biff-bam-pow might find it useful. Others, not so much., but I'm knocking this post out quickly before getting back to work on some commissions.

These pages have already been posted on my Patreon (in 2020, iirc) along with an essay about the project, how it collaps...

World's Funnest: Earth Prime Sequence Script w/Art by Stephen DeStefano (Pg 29)

For those who don't know (or don't care, bless you), Earth Prime is the "real world" in the DC Comics Universe. it's "us". It's where DC Comics are producded and the heroes and villains are all fictional. It's this hellhole right here, and the basic joke was that it freaked out Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk hard enough for them to both find something to agree on in the course of the chase throughout the dimensions.

I asked Stephen DeStefano to do the art for the page, Stephen's an old frien...

Adventures In Modern Recording

Hi and hello. Oh, and Happy New Year. Wheee.

Meet the new year, hopefully not the same as the old year. Or at least not worse.

Anyway.

As you may have noticed, there's a poorly made video atop this post. One without a Youtube thumbnail. One where the audio is horrendous. It's awkward, apologies for that. As it stands, Sarah had to come in and spend quite a bit of time fixing it so I could be heard. After trying a lot of other ways just to make this thing pragmati...

Mole Man/M&C Mole Man Cosplay Drawings For Sale.

EDITED TO ADD: The Mole Man drawing set has been SOLD. Thanks so much!

Three index cards, like the recent Vulture drawings, you get a goofball villain done in two styles, and a bonus Milk and Cheese in ding-dong cosplay outfits. originally that was going to be a "price card" like the ones I do for Instagram card sales, but I thought it would be better to not sully the stupidity with a price tag. So, a set of three goofball cards.

I have always been enamored of the...

Georgina Riley Original Art For Sale

EDITED TO ADD: The Georgina drawing has been SOLD. Thanks so much!

If you saw my recent post on Instagram, I've started playing around with a mechanical pencil which has, so far, been really promising for saving wear and tear on my hand. This is the first thing I penciled using it, which I inked and colored, Georgina Riley from the Murder Family/Dork. I really enjoy drawing her.

It's 6" x 4" on heavy card stock. if you'd like to buy it it's $70. U.S. first c...

Tear Them Apart Ep 20: Butterfly Kisses

The newest episode of the horror movie podcast I do with co-host Paul Yellovich is now available to listen to at the usual podcast places, as well as at https://tearthemapartpodcast.home.blog

We ended up doing a much deeper and more detailed take on Butterfly Kisses than expected, especially after we recorded three episodes in a row after abandoning our original plan. Originally, we were going to discuss Butt...

A Comic About Making Comics (#3 in a series)

Regarding panel 4: Paying a sensitivity reader or an expert on a subject to go over your work is not something the average cartoonist can do -- but if you happen to be working on a project that weighs heavily on stuff you're not personally involved with/knowledgeable about, well, there's a reason professional reader and research assistants exist. If you're feeling out of your depths, hit the books and/or get some help. At least find out how out of your comfort zone you might be. If you have a...

WIP: Tear Them Apart Ep 20 Cartoon

Finished inks. Did the crosshatching in bed while listening to old radio shows before going to bed.

Still having issues with learning to scan images in Photoshop, and not figuring out a few changes to doing things with Windows 11. I spent over an hour getting nowhere yesterday trying to figure something out. I'm getting borders around images even though I'm using the marquee tool when scanning, new images are getting saved as folders in Windows. It's a language and a format I just...

Please Stand By: We Are Experiencing Operating Difficulties

My scanner is not operating correctly, I don't know what the trouble is but I wonder if it might have to do with my computer updating to Windows 11. The scanner isn't displaying the preview menu or the image adjustment menu, it doesn't even show the scan button automatically now. I'm trying to use the help function and it's...no help. I am looking online but don't seem able to ask the right questions or find the right answers. This has been an hour and a half of me going "???". I'm going to a...

WITH A DOG AND A CAT, EVERY DAY IS FUN by Hidekichi Matsumoto, vol 1-4 (Some Thoughts)

Whenever people ask that old question of "what comic would you recommend for someone that doesn't read comics", the usual suspects are trotted out, by the usual people, pushing their usual favorites. A lot of Big 2 stuff they adore, with a lot of superhero and Vertigo heavy-hitters (Watchmen, Sandman, Fables, The Dark Knight Returns, etc, etc, etc), and then you get Maus, Bone, Hellboy, Fun Home, maybe Hark, A Vagrant, and a lot of manga, depending on who's being asked. I've always felt most ...

Flip The Page: Early "Welcome to Eltingville" Character Doodles

Sold the last page of art from Dork #8 today, flipped it over and found these early Welcome to Eltingville character sketches on the back. You can see early stabs at Willoughby, Ironjaw and Jane.

Sal and Gary the Dirtbag were part of the series bible but never seen, obviously, since there was no series. Sal was the rival retailer to Joe, an even more awful person and comics retailer, if you can imagine. I don't know what the hell Angry Mouse Man and Wonder Monkey the Retail Chimp ...

(EDITED TO ADD: THE DRAWINGS HAVE BEEN SOLD, THANK YOU!)

Two takes on the classic Ditko-era AARP Spider-Man villain.

I didn't know what to draw to try out some new pens I ordered. Mostly the usual stuff, some Tombows and Uniball white gel pens, but I also got some new Microns in sizes I don't often use, and some Brisk white gel pens in various sizes.

Jury's still out on the Brisk pens, but I think I might try to work with Microns a little more now that I'm seeing why I...

80s Comics Artifact: The Comico Color Grid

Stumbled upon this while moving some comp comics and zines around. This was a pretty ubiquitous item back in the pre-digital day, dating back to 1987 (the same year Pirate Corp$1 was published). Most of us bumming around in the industry had never worked for Comico, but it seemed like everyone you knew had one of these. I can't remember where I got a hold of the guide. I never used it, myself, but Sarah got some use out of it after she moved up to NY. I have never had a real grip on the colori...

M&C x Cthulhu Finished Color Commission/Process

Finally finished this up yesterday, happy with how this came out. I knew I'd overdo the details when I started this one, the stars were right but everything else took more work, ha ha.

More later soon. Revisions on the polar bear/panda M&C figures, fixes on Fugazi, Spy vs Spy vs M&C pencils, roughs for the last few late commissions still remaining. haven't been able to draw any index card art lately, unfortunately.

I'm juggling work on the next Beasts of Burden scrip...

Beasts of Burden Banned By Missouri School Board

Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites is on a list of books and graphic novels banned in Missouri schools in the wake of a law regarding material deemed "harmful to minors". Books are being pulled for fear of crossing the vague and subjective line of what is deemed "harmful", a broad range covering LGBTQ+ issues, holocaust memoirs, classical art studies and even a graphic novel adaptation of the Bible. Authors on the list include Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore and Alison Bechdel. The PEN l...

World's Funnest: Earth C Sequence Script w/Art by Scott Shaw! (Pg 28)

Oh, hey, and we're back with another installment in the World's Funnest retrospective.

This time around we're dealing with Earth C, which was , I'm guessing, a stand-in for Earth Cartoon, as it was comprised of anthropomorphic, talking "funny animals". Earth C was created to house Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew, a light parod of the rest of the DC superhero universe starring a team of powered animals. The leader was (duh), Captain Carrot, and the team was fil...

Milk & Cheese x Cthulhu Commission Inks

Slowly walking four commissions towards final inks. This one crossed the line first. Went a little stupid on the details and textures, even more than usual, but I am pretty darned pleased with it. I'm thinking of making this one a print for the print tier, folks at that level can chime in and let me know if they'd like it uploaded. I'll have to scan it at a higher resolution before I go to colors on it.

Still slowly pushing late and some incredibly late commissions forward. Images show where the WIP stuff stands right now.
