The lighting tutorial is here! I covered some basic breakdowns on how to approach lighting as a concept in illustration - plus doing a quick demo on how to sketch in lighting setups, finishing off with some tips on what to pay attention to as the piece progresses.
It feels a little too long and too short at the same time, I always get the feeling I'm being long winded, but this time I felt there was still a lot more I wanted to cover but couldn't in 45 minutes. However, I do think ther...

A new set! It was a tough one trying to get things to look interesting but a little surreal. The balance was hard to strike but I think the result isn't too bad.
I hope you enjoy it and thank you very much as always for your support!
(This set will feature in a quick segment during the lighting tutorial as well, coming up later today!)

Hello and hope everyone is well!
I'm doing fine health-wise, but things have gotten surprisingly busy in October in terms of catching up on lost time.
Fortunately, this are finally starting to clear up, so the lighting tutorial and this month's work will be up by the end of the week!
In the meantime, here is the continuation of uploads of every Bad Guys set in full-res (this one is kind of a weird set experimenting with designs that didn't go anywhere).
Thank ...

Last sketches for now - it was a surprisingly challenging experience putting these together in this kind of visual presentation style.
Back to the usual full paintings next!

How is everyone?
I'm finally back and working on new pieces full time again! September was a bit of a tough month with a couple things out of my control that got in the way - fortunately, that's out of the way and we're getting back on track.
Very regrettably, I wasn't able to get the Lighting tutorial video out on time for last month- it was difficult to write and present a good video given the conditions and I didn't want to make something too brief/simple for such a highly re...

I've been putting some time into making a few design sheets as and when I can. It's just for fun, but I do think it's nice to kind of make it "official" that this character exists (and now has a name!)
It was surprising tough working in this format -without my usual complicated backgrounds and compositions to hide difficult parts of the drawing. Do let me know what you think!
I'm still mostly not able to draw this couple of weeks, but I am looking forward to getting back on sch...

It's been some time! I'm mostly fine with my health now and am working on new stuff again, as well as catching up the delayed August videos. I also want to say thank you for everyone's concern in the comments of the last post, it was very touching.
I'm trying something a bit new for this set of process steps! Rather than the usual paragraph per step for 6-7 steps, I'm going through each .psd for the individual pieces and talking about progressing from each phase to the next. It's defini...

Summary: August content (process steps and tutorial video) will be put up as quickly as I can manage, there will be a NO BILLING break in September (you can remain a patron, browse content, etc with no charge until next billing date on Oct 1)
Hello everyone, it's been a while since I last posted anything (August in general has been pretty quiet in terms of content), and I thought I just wanted to let some very important people (you ...

This was such a tough set to complete, I'm just going to go lie down for a bit :)
For a change, what you do you think about these pieces? Do let me know in the comments!
p.s. The process steps will still be up as always, but I need a little break before writing them.

You may have seen me putting up an announcement regarding the launch of this book on other platforms just a few minutes ago!
I was honored to be one of a few contributors to write a tutorial segment for the book, regarding the creation of this piece here:

The book itself is a really nice collection of technical knowledge and illustrated ...

Hello everyone and welcome to August! It's been 6 months since we've started this Patreon journey and I really can't express how grateful I am for everyone's support here.
I'm currently working on making something interesting with the Bad Guys series (in my own capacity), but it will be a little bit on the ambitious side of things! It will be a slightly longer term project so please do look forward to seeing it towards the end of the year. Needless to say I will also document it via a f...

July really flew by quickly, and it's almost time for August's tutorial poll!
For now, this is teaser for a slightly larger personal project I've been working on, it's going to be quite tough but I'm feeling really excited about sharing it with everyone once it's ready!
But as always the process steps and full-res version will still be there to help explain and discuss the making of the piece, as a lot of people have found those helpful.
Update: Process steps are now up!

July is coming to an end and I just want to say another big thank you to everyone for your immense support, it really means a lot to me :)
I'm finding quite a bit of enjoyment in reworking and experimenting with this style of illustration again. Doing the Bad guys series is still fun, but I have to admit constantly trying to push and find better compositions can get a bit tiring!
Hopefully I can find some time to create more of this style of art again, using newer knowledge I've ...

This month's video was decided by a poll here on Patreon, it was pretty close, but character design won out in the end!
In this video I tried to be a bit more comprehensive in covering some basics about visual character design and what it can do for you, plus a 30min normal speed demo covering the design process in more of a sketch format.
Looking back I did feel it was bit unfortunate I didn't have time to go through some of my own designs and talk about why I made choices this...

Update: Process steps are now up, apologies for the delay!
Instagram also has saw it fit to delete this piece from my account, so in the future I will probably have to "censor?" stuff going up there.

This was a really interesting piece to do for a couple of reasons - I wanted to kind of refresh myself on character design for this months video (coming soon!) and finally start to solidify the characters in the Bad guys series I've been doing.
There will be a...

Wow, it looks like we've managed to get through a lot of big and burning questions in the past few months!
Last month we've only had one additional question, so I figured it would be simpler to break convention to answer this in a written format:
Cristina asks:
Hi, I know I’m late here but I just have a question. So I know the best way to get noticed and hired as a new artist is to drawing fanart, but whenever I draw fanart I just don’t feel it. Should...

This was a fun piece to do! Ironically, with poses that are less (extremely) dynamic, I feel it's actually more important to find references to help you nail down the body language. The subtlely actually tends shows in quite a few places that I wouldn't normally think of immediately.
Also, sually I tend to omit a lot of "deliberate" design from my environments and background, going for simpler details like grime, wires, cracks, etc, but this time I tried to create a simple wallpaper des...

The process for creating this piece was quite interesting! It was a little bit tough in terms of making sure everything looks in place (as much as I can manage), but also really fun since I got to just make up and choose the setting quite freely, with just a loose theme in mind.
Since there have been some questions posted while I was working on writing the process steps, I decided to answer them in the walkthrough, I hope you will find them useful!
Thank you as al...

After a couple of slice-of-life type illustrations, I wanted to mix it up a bit with something more fun. This piece was the result!
Overall this was definitely more of a just have fun and see where we end up piece, especially since I decided to make up the setting as we go along. Hopefully you enjoy this piece and reading about the process as much as I enjoyed creating it!
Thank you as always for your support.

This was a tough piece to finish satisfactorily! There were so many details and parts to making a setting like this work well that I actually felt quite constrained from doing much design-wise. Nonetheless, it was a great learning experience as always, and I'm very much looking forward to complete the next few pieces, which I've now planned in a way to give myself more freedom to play with!
The process steps for this one are quite interesting, and I think you will enjoy reading more on...

This one might look new, mainly because I've actually never actually posted or finished the original (2nd image). Just couldn't get it to feel or look what I wanted back then but I decided to give it a quick go recently. I think the composition feels a little outdated compared to more recent works, but it was a fun time anyway!
Hope you enjoy it as always :)

Portraits have always felt a bit difficult, but very rewarding for me. Sometimes it feels really easy to under-paint a piece and have it turn out too bland, but when you manage to pack in enough interesting stuff and find the right colors/mood, it's fun to mess around and have a nice impactful result!

It's been 4 months since I started Patreon and I really want to say how much I appreciate everyone's support here, it means a lot and I'm very lucky and grateful to be able to do this for a living!

It was quite fun drawing one of those shop at night scenes I used to do a lot, but now in a more recent style! I started this image with a method I don't usually attempt, so it was quite an adventure getting things to slowly work out.
Overall it's a bit of a softer scene without the usual dramatic lighting and posing, but it's fun do these nonetheless!

This month's video is a much requested quick guide to using reference! I think it's really something I haven't talked about in detail yet, despite it's great importance to every artist.
In the video I go through a couple of reasons why reference is important, some very key things to keep an eye out for as you use it, as well as some practical info on finding and painting with it.
I tried to compact the video a little to keep it under 30 minutes this time so hopefully it is more ...

It's been so long since I've did this type of drawing! So when I came across this older piece today I decided to give it a go to rework it for fun; it took about an hour or so and I am actually quite happy that I was able to add a little bit of color in to spice up the scene.
I think the original does make use of the monochrome quite well with the setting, but some parts felt a little too empty. Either way, the process of reworking this a little does motivate me to revisit this kind o...
