Gardening (inks, nudity) - July 4

Hoping folks from the U.S. are having an awesome 4th!

The weather calmed down enough to let me finally clean up and ink the 'Gardening' picture.  Originally she had a heart on her flank, but I swear I heard her say "Nope!  Stars!"  So.. its stars now.

Hoping to get the flats done on this, then work on a more wolfy picture I have in mind, then its onto the patron sketch.

Wanderlong - July 3rd

Just a bit of an update.  The weather here is nothing short of wonderful and abysmal, depending on if you like to be out in the sun on impossibly hot and humid days or not.

I don't.

But artwork is continuing without too much interruption as I have a 'portable studio' of sorts to use when I don't dare turn the work desktop on in this kind of horrid heat.  The next few updates might only be sketches in black and white since Its not easy to do complex colour work on a Surface tabl...

Just a cheeky image of tomato gardening.

Rough preview image of a painting in the planning stages.

Neigh Pie Survey - June 26th

One out of every one Anders agrees that they like pie too.

Was much too hot to sit in the studio, so I took a spin on the surface in cooler environs and sketched something fun/doofy.

Races of Felwroth List 3 (nudity) - June 22nd

The final (for now) list of the last few races of the world.  There are other humanoids and critters, but generally these are the ones that feature a bit more prominently.

I'll be colouring these for sure, as well as moving onto the female side of the list as well (So another 3 pages).  Its been fun visiting races I nearly forgot about again, and trying to imagine what their lives are like.

Races of Felwroth List 2 (nudity) - June 20th

The next in the male series of various common races in Felwroth.  Admittedly Elves aren't very common on Felwroth.  They're a race that came over from the Sylvan Wilds centuries ago.  But I wanted to include them since I like the nature-race types.

Third race style-sheet is underway, as well as a couple other sketches.  I'm trying to be as productive as possible between bouts of inhuman heat/humidity.

Some of the sketches down the road are a remake of some of the 'mon...

Races of Felwroth 1 - June 15th

I've been wanting to compile a race list for the world of Felwroth for ages now.  A sort of cultural cross-section of male and female heights, clothing, etc.  I surprised myself by just how many different peoples I have on this world that started as a game world decades ago and slowly accumulated various races and cultures since that time.

This is a basic start in a series of art projects I'll be doing in my spare time over the next while that outlines parts of the world.  There...

Gentle Warning (final inks) - June 12th

Final inks of last month's Patron sketch.  I detailed a lot more than normal with special thanks to Airakar for being very patient.

I had some 'life things' (tm) strike in the last five days that took a lot of the wind out of my sails until I could get them taken care of.  I'd noted on Twitter that my cat Smokey collapsed early on Saturday morning.  I'm happy to report he's doing much better now, and is sat next to me (paw on my arm, asking for pettings)  as I post this. Gentle Warning - June 7th.

With a special thanks to Airakar for allowing me to post the roughs (and later the inks) of his patron sketch from last month.  I normally try to curb the amount of backing detail and characters I put into any given sketch, I liked the character and idea so much that I wanted to do a little more of a complete scene with this one.

This month's sketch should be announced around the same time it usually is.  I'm still working to get commission information solidified in the brief times I...

Gardenworks - June 1st

Gardening season in full swing, and it can be a lot of work (more if you decide to do it all in one go).

Done as a warm up sketch recently.

Had a couple large life events happen recently, but will be posting info about taking on a commission or two by the end of the week hopefully.  I might just make it more of a pay what you want thing as I can't figure out a price range still.  So many artists charge such wildly differing prices these days.  More info later.

Thanks...

The Ash gather

The Matriarch of Moths approaches.

Rise, brides rise

Pull from the grip of earth

Shake free your dust

And scream your song

For the mother of moths comes.

Rough Sketches? - May 22nd

One of the main reasons I don't post really rough sketches is that I never really think folks would want to see the 'mad scribbles' stage of most of my roughs.

I know a lot of artists who can do some really defined and clean looking rough sketches in comparison.  When I start any sketch it's literally a lot of gesture lines followed by 'greying in' of something I have in mind.  I scratch in the basic anatomical shapes and try to do something around those (sometimes skeletal, other ti...

Palm Summer Tribe (Inks) - May 8th.

Sunlight finally hit our part of the world, cutting through two and a half extra weeks of tenebrous greys and snowy drizzle.  I've finally been able to burn off some of the winter pallor from my Canadian canvas and wanted to make this picture the painting for the month.

Kai (the Laontran 'tattooist') is good at arguing why a reixos would dance divinely at the festival of fire and sun.  Cerenon is doubtful.  Worried his sheer size among a largely small people would be akin to a m...

Worried about the insomnia of snow - May 3rd

This poni is worried about the insomnia of snow.

I recently picked up a Surface 4 so I could have something to be able to sketch in a more 'portable' capacity.  When I had the recent renovations being done here I lost about two weeks of work as I had to be on premises while the contractor was around.  The Surface would have been a godsend to have at that time.

I've had a recent flare up of a chronic bout of sciatica stemming from an injury I got many years back on ...

General Update - May 1st.

Hey all,

Hoping the weather is warm(er) for you all.

I thought I'd send out a bit of an update with what should be coming up art/creation-wise.  This is mostly just a general idea, much of it woven between getting the property ready for gardening and (yet more) renovation when the months get warmer.  I'll personally just be glad to get out there and see the sun again.  S.A.D did a number on me this winter.

First up, you'll probably be seeing a lot more 'sunny' art fr...

Of Kings and Stories Read - April 25th

"They called him 'King' in our town.

I remember my father and other local people had talked of finally removing King from the place he stood, though Elder Aedinos warned them it would be unwise:

"The lore tells us that he is rooted deep into this world.  He was the first king, and a part of this land like no other.  When temples burned and kingdom fell, he rooted himself to the lands to keep them from turning to ash.  And he has stood there ever since.  To move him wo...

Rusted Kings Colour WIP - April 18

Hey all!

Hope you all had a good long weekend.  I've been plugging away at the painting for this month, and managed to get a fairly good idea of where I wanted the lighting/shadow/general colour theme to be for this one.  It still has a ways to go but is in a good enough state to give a preview.

Hoping to have this done within the week.

Palm Summer Tribe (rough) - April 9th

Had a strong urge to sketch something summery/bright again.  Roughed this in over the course of the last couple of days.

Qiuloa is a bright series of gems amidst a deep sea.  It was a place that Kai never got to grow up in, and Cerenon could never have imagined.

Festivals were always a riot of rhythm and music amidst people emblazoned with swirling designs that told the stories of the sea, their people, and the very world itself.  There was always food, always drink, and t...

Greeting Spring - April 2nd

(Nudity Warning)

A sketch I had done for last month's Patron, posted courtesy of the character's creator Serandite!  I was asked to do a spring theme for this sketch and I was all to happy to do so.  I think I've had enough of snow for a while.

I'm basically doing art 'full time' now.  I still am a caretaker, but I'm now up early on weekdays to get art/writing work done for both here and (hopefully soon) start taking on commissions again.  Its taking a lot of getting ...

The Hello Factor - March 27

I often do warm-up sketches when starting work on projects and they're often wildly un-connected to the work I'm doing to let my brain get used to doing linework again (In this case, it was a warm-up sketch before the Patron sketch for this month).

I try to keep things simple.  I don't think I'm great at 'cute' or 'cartoony' but its more serving to let me get into that 'art' space I tend to lose overnight.  This one was cute enough for me to throw a very simple flat colour on and sha...

Rusted Kings (inks) - March 20

I'm a bit slow this month.  With contractors at the house tearing up the bathroom and having to clean out decades of junk between the day-job I'm actually surprised I got the inks done for this pic!

The inks are fairly basic.  I tend to not go too crazy on detail when the image is destined to be coloured, mostly just hashing out lightly where shadows will lay when I do my overpaints.

I ended up wanting the 'king' she's reading to look as decrepit and old as possible, so I hollo...

Isaac Fenton and Lun - March 14

A sletch I was actually asked to do a while back for a Patron as a gift.  The roughs were posted a month or two ago, but I was able to sit and just finish the inks for it.

Isaac is a powerful mage and professor.  Lun is a 'Moon Wolf' (intelligent types of wolves on the world) and depending on who you ask, she's either Isaac's familiar, or He's her familiar.

I'll be sending out the e-mail to the next $10 tier patron for their sketch tomorrow as well.  As the day-job winds down towards the end of the month I'll likely be taking on more work art-wise until I can find another jerb.  I thank all of you for the support you've given me, ...
