The Provinces of Wei

Welcome to the lands of Fara Wei, or simply "Wei." I've been meaning to draw this for a long time, as it just so happens to be the setting of my own 3+ year old campaign!

The provinces of Wei are the setting of an eternal clash between fantasy-Japan, fantasy-China, and the ancient oni living in the mountains. It's a land with a shrouded history and many secrets, where dreams seem at times to overlap w...

The Provinces of Wei (Parchment)

As is tradition now with my region and world maps, here is a classy parchment-looking version. It's my personal favorite version, in fact. :)

The Underdark Terrain Tokens

Hello everyone, the tokens are finally here to accompany our Cave Room Builder pack! Inside you will find 141 tokens of varying bio-luminescence and underdark-y-ness, from mundane rocks to plane-tearing crystals, your everyday mushroom to nirnroot-er, ethereal ferns.

Also inside, I have a full-color version of the...

The Buildings Pack

Hi everyone! After many hours plugging away at it, the Buildings Pack is finally ready. Inside you will find a collection of floor plans, a bunch of compatible roofs (in red AND grey), and a couple of other pieces to customize them with.

This is the completed version of last month's pre-release, and is built upon the pieces of the Haunted Mansion. With these new roofs and stair/door/wall tokens, I've ...

Stepping Into November

October is over and the Halloween decorations are slowly coming down! Still, if you want to celebrate with a spooky one-shot, last month's Haunted Estate map set make for a great adventure:

Now that it's November and we leave the spooky theme behind I want to catch up on a few promises I've made. I'll keep it vague for now, but expect a region map or two, a pack to enhance those buildings I...

The Haunted Garden

Boo! Did I surprise you with another map so soon? So that you can have the whole estate before Halloween (and because I'm going away tomorrow) I'm here with the final piece of our spooky October project...

This is the Haunted Garden, which attaches seamlessly to the bottom edge of the Haunted Cellar. As you can see, it features a tall wall (with convenient tree overhang), a fetid wate...

The Haunted Cellar

What lies beneath a haunted mansion? Why, a haunted wine cellar of course! This map serves as both an atmospheric base for last week's mansion and as a battle map for its spooky basement.

The entrances to the cellar are outside and under the two interior staircases, and you will find that the first floor snaps neatly over the cut-away space on this map.

I went all in with the Hallowe...

The Haunted Mansion (Furnished)

As promised, with the release of the Mansion Tokens, I have put together this furnished Haunted Mansion, and with a spooky color palette to boot!

I spent half a day cluttering up the place, and am happy with the result! As you can see, this abandoned home features a dining room, library, and a drawing room on its first floor. On its second, bedrooms, a study, and a trophy room.

There's certainly...

The Mansion Furniture Tokens

Wow, are these token packs labor intensive! I'm glad that all the busywork is going to such enthusiastic people though, and I can't wait to see what you all put together with these.

Stay tuned, for our haunted mansion project is still growing!

Thanks to you, these tokens are released under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license.

The Haunted Mansion

The first piece to our spooky October project, the unfurnished mansion!

This two storey mansion is based on an encounter my brother Troy created, which was in turn based on the 1890 residence of Henry R. Towne ESQ.

As you can see, it is quite unfurnished. I wanted to break this project down into modular pieces (see the Buildings Pack prerelease) so that it would be good for more than one session...

Buildings Pack (Prerelease)

I saw an opportunity when I started the Haunted Mansion to break it up into a bunch of useful pieces. Originally, my plan was to form a space-warping door-connected-to-random-door encounter but, as you can see, these can quite easily pass as standalone smaller buildings too!

I call this a prerelease because I want to draw up roofs for each of these "standalone buildings" so that they match the rest of our set piece buildings, but that will come next month.

I would love for someone to bre...

The Castle Town (Parchment)

As thelibraryghost pointed out, it's something of a tradition to make parchment versions of town maps. Well, I agree!

I'm In The Mood For Spooky

My September has been filled to bursting, how about you? Talk about a photo finish.

(Please just pretend with me that I'm posting this on time, and that the Castle Town came out days ago).

It's October now though, and that's the perfect excuse to visit some old cliches on the fantasy world. I'm thinking graveyards, abandoned churches, and secret crypts...

What would you suggest? I'd ...

Castle Town

EDIT : Here it is, the finished Castle Town! Though much delayed, I'm glad I took the time to polish this new town map, and I'm excited to share it with you today.

This is a small castle town on the coast, in a defensible location on a well-trafficked sea route. The township is basically there to support the castle and house its samurai.

I'd love to hear your names and lore idea...

The Luminescent Cave

A glowing tunnel suitable for the Underdark or flavorful mountain pass.

This map was an experiment in a more whimsical line style, which I used in an effort to give the tunnel the look of a rounded floor. It doesn't look so fabulous on its side (as seen above) but works great in portrait!

What do you al...

The Luminescent Cave (Mundane)

Also known as the non-luminescent luminescent cave, but that was too much of a mouthful.

Perhaps the encounter starts out like this but, upon brushing by one of the cave-ferns, the whole tunnel lights up as a mycanoid ambush is sprung?

The Cobblestone Highway

Hello again, at long last! My vacation is over and I have a few maps to share before the month is up, beginning with this slightly-boring-but-endlessly-useful highway.

This map is ready to go as-is, but I recommend seasoning it with some free Forest Tokens, or one of our set piece buildings. I like to t...

Sometimes I Still Think It's 2017

It's September already, can you believe it? Well, I am satisfied with what I accomplished in August, and very excited for the opportunities that have materialized.

Though I had some plans going into last month that I never got to, I am not at all unhappy with the token-centric direction the it took, and our collaboration with Forgotten Adventures was icing on the cake.

In September I'll be aimin...

Over the last few weeks I have been working with Peter "Stryxin" Peko from Forgotten Adventures to create this fun portal-centric battle map duo!

More Videos Next Month!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to leave this note explaining my slow video release schedule.

Right now it's particularly time consuming to film and edit videos so, rather than wasting time, I am just going to wait until mid next month when I can get back to my work station. Then, I'll make a whole bunch of hay while the sun shines. In the meantime I will just focus on my maps and other projects.

So, thank you all very much for hitting that Tutorial Videos milestone! I absolutely plan to foll...

Hero Tokens

Fun experiment, or the start of a new series? I would love to hear your opinion.

Till now I have only drawn tokens of furniture, trees, and other objects, but many people have requested hero tokens. So, this is my take on some hand-drawn heroes!

It is not a comprehensive collection, rather it is an experimentation in posing and perspective, with only a little thought paid to representing the rac...

Happy August!

This month we made three maps, all of which I was proud to share. I hope to keep up the momentum this August, so buckle up tight!

Plans may change, but I want to revisit making 3D papercraft buildings, I'd also like to release a cave token set, and I'd like to try my hand at a CHARACTER token set. It should be a great deal of fun!

Please leave your building and token suggestions below. I always ...

With these, you can furnish a store, caravan, or even an entire marketplace!

Tokens take a lot of work to make (especially so many) but I had a lot of fun working on these! I never expected to be drawing pumpkins, battleaxes, and wagons all in the same day.

You can use these to embellish other maps, or even create one from scratch using the 2018-07-07 07:42:12 +0000 UTC View Post

Let's Draw a Forest Encounter QUICK

I spent all of yesterday putting together this video and, well, I just don't like it! I'm not going to publicly release it on YouTube, but I thought that some of you may enjoy it anyway.

It contains my thought process when I draw a QUICK battle map during game time at my table. It covers the drawing technique as well as the mental check list I use to make a tactically interesting battlefield.

It's not a terrible video, but it does suffer from horrible exposure and a bad case of ...
