At around 3PM on Wednesday, September 20 2017, a resident in the Southfields district of southwest London was disturbed by a foul odour. Peering outside, they noticed black smoke emanating from their next door neighbour’s rear garden from what appeared to be some kind of “weird barbecue”.

Case 218: The Blackout Killers (Part 2/2)

The S-Bahn commuter train rattled along in the darkness towards the eastern side of Berlin. Slowly, the cityscape gave way to the sprawling suburbia of Friedrichsfelde. It was here, in the early hours of August 13 1939, that Lina Budzinski disembarked. Walking alone, she headed towards the nearby allotment garden.

Case 217: Kathleen Marshall

On Sunday, March 1 1998, crime scene examiners gathered at a residence on Main Avenue in the upscale Queensland suburb of Wilston. The two-storey, cream-coloured weatherboard home sat on a sloped hill that overlooked Brisbane’s CBD, which was five kilometres away. It was far from a remote location, yet the property’s position against the Eildon Hill Reservoir granted it a bushland backdrop akin to a rural homestead.

Case 216: The Itzkovitz Family

Eliahu Itzkovitz spent much of his childhood confined behind the walls of Romania’s Chișinău Ghetto – a place where he and other Romanian Jews were held prisoner by their government. The ghetto’s inhabitants were routinely robbed, beaten, raped, and even killed by guards, police, and civilians emboldened by the country’s anti-Semitic leaders.

Case 215: The One-Man Crime Wave

On Saturday, May 27 1978, a thunderstorm lashed the U.S. state of Missouri. In the northwest city of St Joseph, hundreds of locals braced the cold, wet weather to trudge through the wooded banks of the Missouri River, beyond the railroad on the city’s western edge. They were searching for something. Their path led beyond the well-worn walking tracks and into the dense foliage, where muddy conditions made for a hazardous trek.

Case 214: Kevin Hjalmarsson

The residential area was located on the shores of the Kyrkviken bay, just three kilometres outside central Arvika. It was a close-knit community and residents mostly trusted one another. Therefore, it was common practice for the local children to play around town without supervision, provided they steer clear of the main roads and lake. They never veered too far, and a familiar adult was never too far away.
